Fascinating Insects: The Praying Mantis Caught in The Act!
Something captured my sense of hearing above my head when I went outside. I saw this old mantis struggling from getting caught by a spider's web! I would say it's a matured mantis because it has a light brown coloring and it's quiet big!
It struggled profusely to get away from its prey. It was able to fly away but it landed to a more sticky web.
When I woke early to visit my plants, I saw a mantis among the leaves. It looked like the one I saw last night and I was happy it was able to escape from the big spider!
A Bit of History
The word mantis was derived from the Greek word mantikos which means prophet or soothsayer. It is because of its stance as if it's in prayer with it's forelegs being upright and close together.
It is said that praying mantis is able to turn it's head at 180 degrees that it can see everything the eyes can see even at the back but it was not able to see the thin cobweb! One characteristic that makes this fascinating insect unique is that the female kills the male mantis after mating.
