2020 Tokyo Olympics - Women's Artistic Gymnastics - Women's All-Around Final

They say history has the habit of repeating itself, which is true. In sports there are events that very often are dominated by the same few countries. Gymnastics is not any different, however, today we've witnessed a miracle if I'm allowed to say that.

Today it took place the Women's All-Around Final, an event that many of us has been waiting for, to see who's the best at all apparatus. Predictions are usually based on the team results, but nothing is guaranteed, obviously.

Those of you following the events know Russia won the team competition, followed by the US and Great Britain came third. Based on this ranking, one would have thought we would see a similar ranking today but we didn't. In fact a miracle has happened.

There has been a big fuss about why Simone Bile has stepped down. I'm not going to to go into details. What's done it's done, her time would have come anyway as no one can compete forever. She's gone now and it's time to focus on other valuable gymnasts, who deserve as much spotlight as anyone else. I don't care what the predictions has been for the women's all-around final, it doesn't matter.

The lady on the photo above, Sunisa Lee has shown what she's capable of and has been able to win the most wanted medal of the competition. She was the best and got a gold for her performance. Life goes on and a team has many gymnasts, not just one. Well done!

Brazil is famous for many things, but gymnastics is not one of them. This young lady, Rebeca Andrade was able to make history today. Brazil had a bronze medal in gymnastics, at a world championship if memory serves me well, which is something, but compared to other nations, it's nothing to write home about.

Today that statistics has been changed by this amazing young lady. She was absolutely fantastic, even when she made two, quite serious mistakes at the floor, which was her last performance. She stepped out twice, which means 0.3 penalty each, but her performance must have been constructed on a lot of valuable elements, executed almost perfectly, to be able to get a good score. I couldn't be more happy to be honest. I believe her performance will open some doors and we may see Brazil more at top level competitions.

The Russian Melinkova got the bronze, which is a good achievement, usually. It's just that before Rebeca Andrade finished her performance on the floor, second and third place was occupied by two Russian ladies. After the Brazilian lady finished her floor performance, Urazova was pushed down to fourth place. I can imagine her disappointment and the team's disappointment in general, but that's how it is in sports. It's not over till it's over.

The Hungarian Kovács Zsófia placed 14th, which is not exactly what she was hoping for. She had a good evolution, obviously not for a medal, but the big problem came when due to an error, she was forced to jump down of the balance beam. She did well on the vault and uneven bars, but the floor and the balance beam is not her strong suit. She's 21 , so I think she's at the end of her career, but I'm glad we could see her in Tokyo.

I was expecting more for the Chinese ladies. One of them fell from the balance beam, which came as a surprise. When she started her exercise, it looked like she's bullet proof as all her moves were perfect, or close to perfect. Then one wrong move ruined everything.

All in all it was a good competition, without major problems. A few gymnasts had to jump off the balance beam and a few fell from the uneven bars, but this happens all the time, it's part of the competition.

It is a pity that Rebeca Andrade made such gross mistakes on the last exercise and thus gave the gold medal to Sunisa Li. I wanted to see Rebeca come first!

She did well anyway and let's not forget that her country has no history in gymnastics and most likely she lacks experience too.
