Chelsea hosted Porto in their second leg of this Champions League tie after winning the first leg by 2 goals in the same venue. Porto would have hoped to do the damage to Chelsea but Chelsea held firm and got through by a 2-1 aggregate scoreline. It was a game that looked like ending in a draw but the Porto scored late even though it was a little bit too late as well.
It was a game with few chances but you would expect Chelsea to go through and on the other hand, this is football where the unexpected can happen.
Chelsea started well and brightly too and in the 7th minute, Mason Mount thought he would set the ball rolling as he did in the first leg when Pulisic found him close to the edge of the box and his cheeky attempt was blocked off for a corner kick. Brilliant attempt from Mount. In the 11th minute, a terrible attempt at a clearance by Mendy fell to Corona and his goal attempt was quickly stopped and it went for a corner kick. What a goal that would have been.
In the 54th minute, Chelsea fluffed their lines again when Mount found Chilwell and Chilwell cleverly found Pulisic but the American couldn't connect very well with the ball and the threat was neutralized. That was a brilliant chance to take by Chelsea.
Porto won't go out so easily and they demonstrated that in the 57th minute when Kante found Mount at the edge of the box. His shoot was snuffed out and it went for a corner kick. Havertz was in a better position to receive the pass from Kante.
In the 65th minute, Taremi had a lovely header in the box but Mendy was up to it. It wasn't much of a threat to Mendy because the header lacked pace.
Not to be denied for long, Porto redeemed a bit of their ego when in the 3rd minute of added time, a brilliant ball in came to Taremi and he produced an audacious effort with a stunning bicycle kick that left Mendy rooted to the same spot to give Porto the win on the night but Chelsea still went through on aggregate.
Chelsea got through to the Semi-Finals and would be meeting either Liverpool or Real Madrid.
