My Rose Blooms Got Fried!

avatar

The temperatures here in Northern California have been in the triple digits since last week. Although the potted vegetables are fine, the rose booms were not.

My poor rose blooms. They got fried. Fried Rose Blooms!

The rose blooms aren’t the only parts of the roses affected by the summer heat – the leaves can become sunburn. The sight of brown crispy petals and leaves may make you want to prune them away but don’t. Why?

Firstly, pruning will stimulate new growth that will be even more susceptible to sunburn damage. Secondly, the older branches and leaves will help to shade the growth underneath the sun.

I know that it is very hard not to prune away the brown leaves. However, in August, I shall pull out my pruning shears and prune back my rose bushes by 1/3. This removes the sun-damaged flowers and leaves and stimulates new growth.

I feel sad for the less than stellar appearance of my rose blooms and feel that it’s easier to grow roses in other climates. But, compare that with gardeners in other regions who have to deal with the dreaded Japanese beetle that shows up every summer and eats their roses. Or, people who live in more humid climates and are having to deal with severe cases of blackspot or powdery mildew (white spots on the leaves).

And so, I will ignore my less than beautiful roses this summer, because I know that they will look fantastic this fall 🙂

Oh no! Your lovely rose blooms got fried my the sun. Argh! I guess that one of the downsides of summer - hot sun and heat. I'm thinking if you find something to shade your roses with, will it help?

Yes, that is why they are so popular. It makes me wonder why... is it ingrained in our systems or is it learned!
Truly they are beautiful!

Even here in Italy it is exceptionally hot. If you park the car under the sun, it is then difficult to re-enter and drive it. I'm sorry for your roses, the rose portrayed in the last photo of the post is wonderful.

Yes, where I live, it's the black mold spots and white mildew; I used to grow beautiful roses back in Ohio! Oh well! Yours are still pretty albeit a bit crispy. Take care sis!

Ohio... By the way, I meant to ask you: how did you end up where you are. Wait, are you on the eastern side of Canada, or northwest?

We are in Washington state up very near the Canadian border. We were born and raised in Ohio. Both @silvertop and I longed to move west and ended up for a few years in Colorado. I worked for Walmart at the time, and one of the advantages was that you could transfer from one store to another without losing your job. We wanted to go further west yet, so I got an atlas and opened it up to the state of Washington, closed my eyes and dropped my finger on the page. It landed on Bellingham, and in the course of taking a trip to see the lay of the land, ended up where we are now. I transferred to the Bellingham Walmart, and stayed with the company until I reached 20 years. Then I quit, and ended up at the clinic where I am employed now. I can't go any further west than we are as the land runs out and I don't do boats, lol! Take care sis and thanks for commenting!

Poor roses. They are beautiful. So unfortunate that they were fried by the sun. Extreme weather everywhere nowadays.

Within the "tragic" you can bring out something beautiful. The colors you get from the burnt edges of the petals stand out in the photo and look like something of their own. Depending on the angle of the photo it looks beautiful rather than wilted. As for the rest, it is unfortunate that the sun, which favors them so much, is now damaging them, an example of "everything in excess, hurts.
