Fails of the Urban Explorer: A Quartet of Failures XV

I’m a little stoked today after getting in St Josephs Orphanage, a rather famous explore that is not far from where I live but has daunting entrance demands.

While not going into details, the goalposts have been temporarily changed making access very easy. Give it a week and it will all be blocked again. That’s a certainty.

8_IMG_0074_8.jpg

For now, it’s another score of fails though I am getting quite short of these.

Many I tend not to photograph such are the levels of despair and suicidal thoughts that race through my head when failing to get into an old barn full of cow shit.

RedLine.png

The Junction Hotel

This strange-looking building was a drive-by and stop would-be explore. They didn't half make weird architecture in the 1900s or that's my guess on when it was built.

9_IMG_0075_9.jpg

1_IMG_0066_1.jpg

3_IMG_0068_3.jpg

We scouted around the back bypassing the dismal levels of herras fencing that had been trodden down and spotted a window.

2_IMG_0067_2.jpg

It looked so promising with a curtain flapping in the wind until we saw the bars. Hopefully, there's nobody been trapped in there for years and left to starve.

4_IMG_0069_4.jpg

7_IMG_0072_7.jpg

I have my doubts whether the real Morrisey would perform at 'The Junction Hotel'.

6_IMG_0071_6.jpg

If you look a little closer there's a message from 'Bob, The Talking Testicle'. Make what you will of this enlightening statement.

RedLine.png

The NatWest Bank

This one was doing the TourBus until relatively recently and is now off-limits. We had been in Oldham completing a most terrible '3 out of 10' explore and were making our way back to the car.

1_IMG_0102_1.jpg

7_IMG_0108_7.jpg

"That's the bank where you needed to jump through a hole to get in"..., @anidiotexplores was explaining to me.

2_IMG_0103_2.jpg

3_IMG_0104_3.jpg

Despite him insisting this was not an access point I had to look anyway; just a big old wall with a lot of weeds in the way.

4_IMG_0105_4.jpg

5_IMG_0106_5.jpg

Some things I won’t do and claustrophobia does not help at all. Would you jump down this manhole into the bank vaults and hope you don’t break your legs?

6_IMG_0107_6.jpg

Thankfully there are large bolts in place now which may result in fewer hospital admissions.

RedLine.png

The Elms

A week earlier we visited this nursing home only to find builders on the grounds burning things and generally getting in the fucking way.

7_IMG_0387_7.jpg

8_IMG_0388_8.jpg

9_IMG_0389_9.jpg

Intelligence had informed us it was open which made it worse. These blokes didn't look like sealers, more your typical builders who drink cups of tea all day and do little else.

1_IMG_0381_1.jpg

2_IMG_0382_2.jpg

3_IMG_0383_3.jpg

One week later we were back to find it sealed. What makes it worse is someone got in between our visits.

4_IMG_0384_4.jpg

...'could I squeeze though there? Maybe when I was about 4... yes'...

5_IMG_0385_5.jpg

6_IMG_0386_6.jpg

It was just shitty luck but that’s the way it goes sometimes. I need to explore more on Sundays when these twats are getting pissed down at the pub.

RedLine.png

The Welsh Mansion

I have no idea how @anidiotexplores found this one. We were heading to the next welsh explore several weeks ago and he told me to divert off to the right.

4_IMG_9687_4.jpg

His phone is littered with potential pins, many of which come to nothing due to them being old and out-of-date.

1_IMG_9684_1.jpg

There’s a mansion here”, he whispered as we parked on a driveway that made it quite obvious we were up to no good.

2_IMG_9685_2.jpg

Heading through some bushes I spotted it. It did look deserted but had the tell-tale signs of a renovation.

3_IMG_9686_3.jpg

Why are these spotlights on”, I motioned to my comrade who was beckoning me over to what looked like an access point.

5_IMG_9688_5.jpg

It didn't feel right, but we descended anyway into a quite empty room, that was locked at the far side, at a guess from the other side.

7_IMG_9690_7.jpg

6_IMG_9689_6.jpg

"Let's get the fuck out of here", I said exiting. Some people were walking on the nearby driveway and we narrowly avoided them.

The random pin had come to nothing. Maybe a year earlier this mansion would have been fair game.

No Go hitting quite a few of late, hotel looks like it needs a haircut.

What was that you ended up in, a bomb shelter or wine cellar... you cleared out too quickly!

No use sweating over it all, some you win....

LOL, many of them need a haircut!

What was that you ended up in, a bomb shelter or wine cellar... you cleared out too quickly!

You mean the 3 out of 10? It was an old business, easy access but very little to see. Making a full tale out of that wont be easy, but I will try.

At the rate the buildings are letting you down, you may as well go train spotting following old tracks, tunnels and bridges!

Brits build so much underground you never know what is under your feet!

Have an awesome weekend.

We did try an underground place yesterday.., 'the old tunnels'. There were a bunch of smackheads hanging around the entrance making it not so desirable.

Ah those smackheads make it undesirable in many places...

Sure you will find new stomping grounds soon.

Those first two in particular look amazing. I wouldn't be jumping down a manhole for anyone right enough!

Bob, The Talking Testicle knows his onions eh. lol.

The manhole jump would be arms by your side, jump and down. Is there any room for arms? I think that Bob could be a hit.

Bob gets all the chicks at the parties.

The very thought of the arms at the sides and wheek!!!

So what's the hit rate for getting in places? If there are that many urbexers around I should think anyone who actually cares about their property would want to keep you out as some will be out to cause damage. Shame they have to spoil it for you.

So what's the hit rate for getting in places?

Terrible this year, maybe 50% or less and that's when I am aware of them. Random stops it much less, maybe 20% hit.

50% doesn't sound so bad if you can try a few in a day.

Getting 10 together is getting tougher. Most of them in my area have already been done. We are having to travel further to see new things.

Don't worry, lots more businesses are likely to shut down given the levelling down policy of the government. You'll have to go on a national tour.

Gorgeous fails; they whisper stories in my mind. Do you mind if I use a few as reference images in my art? Not as collage just as inspiration. Beautiful photos!

Im glad my bollox cant talk !!!

It could well have been a care home, I don't even have a pin for it.. as it was one of those pull-over moments. There was some kind of fancy hotel right next to it and some abandoned old cars which we didn't bother looking at.. if that's a clue.

EDIT: It is.. that one you mention. We were too late.

What beautiful photos, it's amazing how a dark gloomy and ugly place can look beautiful if a picture is well done.

I really liked your post and those final paragraphs are spectacular, what a way to invite the community and create content to generate income. It grabbed me and made me join the community.

I like to know new places and cultures, it is likely that when I take a walk I will post here. Thank you very much for the virtual tour and the information. Greetings and congratulations

I post these on Facebook, intentionally a lot later.., yet few come and join HIVE. If they did, and created UX posts.., I would give them votes. It's all too complicated.

It is that most people do not like to create but to imitate, it is easier to copy and win without effort.

That's the publicity that Facebook people are looking for. 🤣

Did someone made the joke already? The end was pretty much the end of Project Blair Witch

Morrisey has refused to play in Manchester in the past. I guess the memories are too stark of growing up there. It was probably a clone.

That hotel looks really interesting.. I wonder how it looked like inside. Why were there bars? I feel like they are hiding something there... like a very big underground factory or some shit, like in Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs game.

That mansion too lol how brave of you to come in! That underground looks like a prison, those where the thriller and horror movies happen.

The bars are to keep the likes of me out! It's a common sight in Manchester. Some of these places get you very edgy, that mansion was one of them. People are often incensed that you are trespassing.. and we have to calm them down when there is a conflict (which is rare).

What is the basement at The Welsh Mansion? It looks like sort of a shelter or a storage or a coal bin.

I think The Elms looked promising if you had a ladder! Those windows above the sealed ones look to be open air.

I think people can use these houses as a shelter for the homeless or a tourist business, it will definitely attract people.

Junction Hotel is so cool and its location, it looks like it is in the middle dividing two streets. Sort of like the Flatiron Building. It's hard to tell because of how it was photographed but I just love diminutive footprint. I was surprised to see the trees growing before the roof I could only imagine what was giving them the nutrition to grow. I don't really want to know, I was just wondering.

I would get such an early nineteen-hundreds building just buy the architecture. I still think it's really really cool and I can imagine how the house like that. I am off to do the deed but I'll be back tomorrow to finish this post.

Well I'm back because I did not finish last night. I don't think that I would want to be doing the tour bus with the NatWest Bank. I wonder what would make them take it off the tour? The place is epically masic in the architecture and I'm sure the history. Yeah the banks where you needed to jump through a hole to get in? Only if I have a skinny little kid with me. You know, one that you don't care about? Because if you jumping through a sewer hole hey, is there any chance there might be a flushed alligator down there? I have to tell you that in New York City they used to find alligators down in the sewers. Of course we all know that that is urban legend but it's really a little bit true. New York City rescues several alligators every year, usually a former pet that's been abandoned once they stop being so cute. With every new sighting the legend gets another boost. We actually have a alligator in the sewer Day in February. It's the real thing. If you have been found in the rivers around New York City but I think they are coming in on boats. Anyway long story short oh, I won't be going down there.

The backside of the bank was attached to something or there's a lot of damage to the back side where the weeds are.

Although you were calling The Elms a nursing home, the sign clearly says private Nursery School, which I thought was a children's School. Could I squeeze through there? Maybe not even when I was four. It does look pretty small. So you're going to have to tell me if that's an old people's home or a children's School.

Mansion house pretty impressive looking for a house and right off the bat look like a renovation project, especially with the bricks and tiles outside. I sent them to leave the basement door open for you oh, and I can see piles of supplies so yeah I would probably get the heck out of there too. That sure would have been fun a little bit earlier. I am not sure how you keep up with all the empties that you have but it sure is fun tagging. along.

From the old reports.. the bank was accessible down that hatch. It's next to a prominent bus route and you would easily be seen going in. Not my scene at all.

We don't have an forms of alligators in the UK.., just snakes every now and again. I have yet to see even one in my lifetime.

People that go to Florida used to bring them back for gifts! They sold them in little souvenir shops. They still find them in storm drains now and then but, they are usually less than three feet...

It is that urban legend that scared the bejesus out of people! :) Ugh! Snakes!

Absolutely! They used to sell them in the little souvenir shops. People with bring them back because at the time not everybody went on vacation like they do now and it was a novelty. Soon it became illegal oh, but they did it for quite a long time. I actually think they did it since like the 1930s and I think is late as the sixties. I'm not sure about that I would probably have to ask. I can remember the stories of my family of my great Uncle doing it and having to put it in his bathtub.

Somewhere, somebody is selling them and really because they still show up in the storm drain on occasion oh, probably about three a year in New York alone
