Tales of the Urban Explorer: Pineheath House

Without being handed this location I would never have found it. It looks like it is in the middle of the country but don’t be fooled.

1_IMG_3829_1.jpg

Pineheath House nestles within the leafy suburbs of a Yorkshire town, relativity concealed from everyday life.

It was once the height of luxury with 12-bedrooms, an observation tower, and heated garages for the vehicles.

Sir Dhunjibhoy was knighted in 1922 for his enormous donations to the British war effort during World War One. Ever the philanthropist, he donated huge amounts of his vast wealth to charities which helped veterans and widows of the Great War.

Sir Dhunjibhoy and Lady Bomanji would spend summer at their home in Windsor, before returning to Bombay (now Mumbai), India, for six months. The couple would then spend autumn at Pineheath House, a tradition Lady Bomanji continued until she died in 1986, 49 years after her husband's death.

The house was sold in 2013 after the death of the Bomanjis' adopted daughter Mehroo Jehangir the year before.

There had been plans to convert the 40-room house into luxury apartments… however…

Entering the grounds was the usual matter of scrambling through prickly gorse bushes, swearing a bit, and trying to do it when no nosey bastards were watching.

We did quite well as it was a Saturday afternoon and I’m guessing everyone was out shopping.

I noticed what looked like security cameras and a lot of them. There was also one of those 360 degrees 'All-Seeing Eye' ones.

2_IMG_3830_2.jpg

Getting in was never going to be a problem, but how about all this bloody security pointing at us?

@dizzydiscovery was about to call it but I called him out - 'What are they going to do..., arrest us?'

3_IMG_3831_3.jpg

A minute later we were in a shell of a house, with not even plasterboard left looking to get things done quickly.

4_IMG_3832_4.jpg

So is it being renovated then?

5_IMG_3834_5.jpg

We wandered through room after room and it was getting a little dull, as barely anything had been left behind.

6_IMG_3835_6.jpg

7_IMG_3836_7.jpg

No Indian turbans, not even a dupatta (OK so I did have to look that one up).

8_IMG_3837_8.jpg

There were a few golf balls dotted around the place and even the odd club. Had someone been playing indoor golf?

9_IMG_3838_9.jpg

I could see the potential of this detached large property and 1986.., it had stood the test of abandoned time extremely well.

10_IMG_3839_10.jpg

I guess ‘Mehroo Jehangir' had been living in it, and why not?

11_IMG_3840_11.jpg

12_IMG_3841_12.jpg

This little sunning area would have been great once.., but not a thing left for us… tut.

13_IMG_3842_13.jpg

So maybe the roof needs a little work, there was some water damage in at least one of the upper rooms.

14_IMG_3843_14.jpg

15_IMG_3844_15.jpg

Did someone run out of cash again, work has been done in here.

34_IMG_3869_34.jpg

There’s even a lift for the servants. If Sir Dhunjibhoy did die in 1937, then servants would have been living in this house during the pre-war years.

16_IMG_3845_16.jpg

17_IMG_3847_17.jpg

19_IMG_3851_19.jpg

As ever the safes were empty. One day I will open one and find otherwise.

20_IMG_3852_20.jpg

They need to get these radiators fitted else there will be no house left.

The last area we checked out was the cellar, and this is what held all the treasure and goodies.

21_IMG_3853_21.jpg

The CCTV system I concluded? We were not going to get busted and hauled out after all.

22_IMG_3854_22.jpg

Was this some miscellaneous correspondence?

Checking closer revealed some old, old magazines and newspapers.

23_IMG_3855_23.jpg

Yorkshire Life from 1966; the countryside appears to have changed very little! The magazine was too damp to open.

24_IMG_3856_24.jpg

A newspaper from June 1964, and look at the style of the dress! A woman gives mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the front page. I guess there was little news that day.

25_IMG_3857_25.jpg

The director of Leeds Polytechnic will be busting students who attend classes while high on LSD. So I'm too young to remember all this shit, wasn't everyone high on acid in 1970?

26_IMG_3858_26.jpg

27_IMG_3859_27.jpg

28_IMG_3861_28.jpg

29_IMG_3863_29.jpg

What this corroded thing in a suitcase is I don’t know. Looks like a tape reel connected to the lid.

30_IMG_3864_30.jpg

Even the golf balls ended up in the cellar.

31_IMG_3865_31.jpg

32_IMG_3866_32.jpg

Just a few things left behind, somebody was into their cars.

33_IMG_3867_33.jpg

Pineheath House was surprisingly almost graffiti free, I hope it stays that way.

Besides the newspapers I snapped, there were lots more but duplicates of the ones I was reading. Why would you keep 30 copies of the same newspaper?

35_IMG_3870_35.jpg

Exiting from bushes is always a problem. You don't know who's walking past. Some bloke shouted 'OY.....' as he saw us leave. Too late dickhead!

Oy!! As if that's going to achieve anything!!

Quite intriguing down in the basement. That's where the goodies always are!!

LOL, I always remember the drama.. if there is any.

I would have been happy with a cup of tea, some biscuits and a read of that 1964 newspaper.. if only it would open! Too wet and damp, and tearing would have been the result.

This looks like it was a really cool place to explore. Especially once you got to the basement. It is too bad that all of those magazines were too damp to check out. Looks like they had a pretty intense camera system at one point in time.

They are often too wet to open up, these were well past their opening time.

What an beautiful place. I wonder what renovating somewhere like this might cost? Possibly more than the house would be worth when finished..

Love those old safe’s. I’ve always wanted an old indestructible iron one.

It's in a nice plush area, I think the renovators ran out of cash!.. it's the usual story. There were 2 safes inside, both these old types.

I don't know what it's like over there, but here most security cameras are fake. I just actually tried to look up if there were statistics on a percentage; but that's obviously wishful thinking. I've noticed that most they don't even make the effort of making the wiring go anywhere- so that's the first thing I always check for- electrical wires that go nowhere.

I don't know why I'm tell you this. I'm sure you have a lot more tips on these things than my amateur ass does.

I'm wondering with 12 bedrooms and 40+ rooms... what the hell were those other rooms? I understand some things but that's a wild ratio.

The place looks awesome. Great photos. Too bad it was pretty much stripped- but still. Looks like pretty unique construction. Great post as always

I think the cameras were real once, the system in the cellar tells me that. Some of it looks new though, the all-seeing eye system for one. Often we see cameras that are no longer in use, though I haven't seen many of those fakes ones you speak of.

Some of the other rooms would have been servants quarters once. The British Empire once encompassed India, and so the rich and powerful from that nation would be able to travel here, tagging along a load of slaves.. er servants. That was how it was then.

Ahhhhh haha I get it. I think it says a lot that servant's quarters aren't considered actual "bedrooms"... like de-humanizing them... god damn this world

That's funny you haven't seen many fake ones. Here it's really common. They sell fake security cameras in just about every hardware store where I'm from. Honestly, it's so common I feel as though it has the opposite(or possibly intended) effect; most people figure the ol' typical grey ones to be fake and ignore them.

Looking forward to catching up on some of your recent posts. My fiancee isn't feeling great today, and I'm taking advantage of her naps to use the blockchain more 😂

Does this place really exist?
When I saw your contribution, I spontaneously thought of the band King Diamond.

Eighties heavy metal atmosphere pure.

Great haul of treasure in the basement, do you get that little extra heart beat when you find stuff like that? It gives me quite a shiver when I do

Yeah, I think that's part of what makes this exciting. It's unpredictable and you can always find something if you look. I do more wrecks than you so have to look harder in most cases. Are you back from Berlin?

Oh I would have imagined a much more luxurious interior! Having so many rooms.... Cleaning must have taken a lot of time. Well they had servants but still... A pity to see a beautiful building decay

This is a fantastic place, on the first picture when I saw the house, for some reason I thought Bridlington (I'm probably miles out), but somehow the house looks vaguely familiar. Love the photos of the old papers and magazines too. I really hope someone is renovating this building, it would make a great hotel or something like that.
