Tales of the Urban Explorer: The Ruins of Far Nook

avatar
(Edited)

Nestling on the edges of the Yorkshire moors above the famous ‘Lesbian Town’ of Hebden Bridge lies a derelict farmhouse.

I picked up the information about this old ruin from Google and then had to track it down.

22_IMG_2915_22.jpg

This was tougher than I thought. It is well documented as ‘Nook’ and even ‘The Ruins of Far Nook’ but all I could pick up was that it was on the old road to Haworth, land of the Bronte sisters.

1_IMG_2894_1.jpg

No other information can be found about this old farmhouse, that is if it once was one?

There is another farmhouse close-by but we saw nobody on this miserable windswept day, parking up in a nearby lay-by as the road is too narrow otherwise.

2_IMG_2895_2.jpg

This particular day, around 5 weeks ago we were heading into Yorkshire once again, and I notched down ‘The Ruins of Far Nook’ as a starter thinking there was little chance of failure when it comes to getting in.

19_IMG_2912_19.jpg

You can hardly fail to get into this one, it’s a question of whether you would like to walk through those arches and have large pieces of ancient masonry fall on your head.

4_IMG_2897_4.jpg

5_IMG_2898_5.jpg

The house appears to be sinking into the ground, as well as nature taking a heavy toll on it, with trees growing pretty much from the central areas.

8_IMG_2901_8.jpg

Getting upstairs was out of the question, or was it? Those stairs looked quite sturdy (just the odd hole here and there) and yours truly was going to find out if death would arrive early by going up.

10_IMG_2903_10.jpg

They held remarkably well, but what I saw at the top was quite dull. It was just a wall of tangled branches.

…'I suppose I am asking too much to be finding a stash of 17th-century working rifles in here?'…

This big pile of collapsed roof was making a statement to me, ‘fuck off, you can’t come this way’.

9_IMG_2902_9.jpg

I had to agree and backed into the entrance room noting how low the ceiling was.

11_IMG_2904_11.jpg

6_IMG_2899_6.jpg

This was a rather large farm once, or was it a couple of houses?

12_IMG_2905_12.jpg

13_IMG_2906_13.jpg

I say this as the other entrance-way looked quite similar; another fireplace and some more stairs.

16_IMG_2909_16.jpg

So yes, I did try and mount these steps but they were in significantly worse condition than the former. I couldn’t even poke my head up there to see what wonders were going to enter my eyeballs.

…’a summer visit to The Ruins of Far Nook is recommended. This stuff I was standing in wasn’t exactly shit, but wet it would be highly unpleasant’…

18_IMG_2911_18.jpg

These old cottages or farmhouses are ridiculously well made. Who would have thought the upstairs area would be semi-accessible looking from afar?

20_IMG_2913_20.jpg

It was a positive start to our Urban Exploration day trip, though not overly-exciting.

21_IMG_2914_21.jpg

This cement mixer was the only relic I could find. It’s not exactly antique but you need to take what you can get given there was nothing else to be found besides cow-shit.

Great find, and I'm really surprised no one's snapped that up for a renno, unless it's very listed or the buyer's just no selling I guess!

Looks like a nice easy ex.

You almost lost me on that article about Lesbian towns....

Where I learnt that..

Sexual geography is now an academic discipline.

Although that was written before the introduction of tuition fees, and I can't seriously imagine anyone paying £30K to study for a degree in that!

I knew about the reputation of the town via hearsay. A quick google confirmed it all. Once I worked in Halifax and my train stopped every day in Hebden.

A transformer dude got on the train every day, in a flowery dress and with hairy legs. Is this some kind of connection to all the lesbians?

'Transformer Dude' - I'd be careful with that language. I can see lawsuits over whether or not 'Dude' is gender specific!

The whole sexuality/ transexuality thing fascinates me - but in political terms i think it might be a bit of a case of this (* about 1000)

Ah... but was a memory from the '90s!

Some Beavis/Butt-headisms have to be experienced to be fully comprehended. For example, there is Beavis’ response to a cross-dressing rocker: “That’s one of those transformers.”

What a cool place! I know it probably didn't have all of the goodies that you are hoping to find in these things, but I like the whole overgrown look. It reminds me of a place where I play disc golf from time to time. The course is built around an old neighborhood so there are overgrown foundations and all kinds of things laying about.

We have a few of these ruins dotted around the hillside. They are OK but not too exciting unless I can find some history. This one has none to hand.

There's some trannies in Hebden too if you're inclined that way?

There might not have been a lot of things to find, but man what an awesome looking building, it would fit in any scary or sci-fi or end of the world movie really well.

Some of them get refurbished every now and again, they make great houses, even barns!

Why is it 'infamous'?

I don't think I could label it 'famous' for that reason.

Why label it 'infamous'? Reading up about it, seems quite good to me.

Wow. Mother nature really had it out for this one. Any information on how long it has been abandoned and why? It looks like it might have a pretty interesting backstory.

Oh to own a house with a fireplace like that!

Always dreamed of living in a farmhouse with a fireplace like that. Instead I find myself in central Florida where it gets barely cold enough for campfires much less a fire in the house. I do love traipsing through these old ruins via your posts.

We do get our fair share of sun, but we don't have those awesome places to explore like you do...the trade offs we must deal with eh?
