Tales of the Urban Explorer: The Squatter's House

I wasn’t sure if I was even going to post this one. After a long hard day of Urbex, ‘The Squatter’s House’ was our last call.

It was getting late, 'home' was a good 50-mile drive and the weariness was setting in.

1_IMG_4170_1.jpg

I know @grindle has already done this one and better than what you are about to read here, and I was quite dismayed to note I missed some things he didn’t.

I do however have a reason, as well as being knackered and in a ‘can’t be arsed’ state of mind.

This detached property is in a shitty suburb of a nearby large city and surrounded by terraced houses of dubious quality.

7_IMG_4176_7.jpg

Getting inside was a matter of walking in the wide open front door and into the hallway. I noted the chandeliers attached to the ceiling that had not yet been swung on and destroyed.

6_IMG_4175_6.jpg

Bad wallpaper and more chandeliers were to be seen within the downstairs rooms.

2_IMG_4171_2.jpg

The walls could use a scrub, and looking into the kitchen area I could see the exit was about as secure as the entrance.

3_IMG_4172_3.jpg

Now I know it was the wind but the constant banging door coming from upstairs was disconcerting and making both of us jumpy.

4_IMG_4173_4.jpg

I made my way up and spotted the culprit of a door incessantly opening and closing.

8_IMG_4177_8.jpg

Peeking around the corner revealed this messy looking tent. Was there anyone lurking in the far bathroom?

We were getting a little edgy and both had our suspicions that someone was hiding behind the door with a great axe waiting to decapitate us.

12_IMG_4181_12.jpg

Backing off and hoping that the owner of the tent was either (a) not there or (b) just waiting for those bastard intruders to leave, we checked the back room which could once have been someone’s office.

10_IMG_4179_10.jpg

The chair may collapse if you sit on it, but what was all that stuff in the corner?

11_IMG_4180_11.jpg

It could almost be described as 'neat'.

9_IMG_4178_9.jpg

I could not say the same about the state of the floor, and is that a complete pair of shoes with laces?

There is no doubt the homeless either live here or have lived here.

16_IMG_4185_16.jpg

We made our way down the stairs, out of the front door, and checked the back of the property.

14_IMG_4183_14.jpg

There was much more to this than the house but we couldn’t be arsed to climb through the window that @dizzydiscovery is standing at the entrance too.

15_IMG_4184_15.jpg

This is why; it looks like there's a pile of crap inside and nothing else.

17_IMG_4186_17.jpg

Security never turned up, though they will do according to this sign.

18_IMG_4188_18.jpg

I have my regrets about not exploring the outhouses properly as I know there were more things to see inside.

13_IMG_4182_13.jpg

As 'The Squatter's House' is not particularly close to where I live, I won't be going back.

It seems that a lot of these houses that you have been visiting have additional living structures on the same piece of property. Is that common? We don't have many things like that around where I live unless you consider a pole barn worth walking through. Those are very common.

This one is strange, it looks detached from the world but is surrounded by shitty houses. It is not uncommon for extensions to be built on houses, though you generally need panning permission.

It looks bigger on the inside than the outside would suggest. Another place that must have been quite lovely in its day. Some nice ceiling mouldings.

Was a nice big place once, another one down the trasher.

That one actually looked like ti would be reparable with out a ton of money. Granted nothing to look at from the outside, just a box house, but if the price was right it looks like it would make a nice home.

You have to feel for people desperate enough to live there in those conditions. Did it smell? There ought to be more done to get more empty houses back into use so we don't keep losing land to more developments. There's a load of new houses going up around here.

Didn't stink as I recall. You get used to the smells in these places and it doesn't bother you after a while.

When I was a cop, there were a few crack houses that I had to go into that looked like this. People were actually living in them though. It was disgusting.

You should write some more of your 'Cop Tales', the last one was really good! It gives people like me an insight into another world, being a cop must have been a varied job outside the red tape shit you have to put up with.

As for people in these houses, only once I have met one. That is still unpublished but the pub in question has now burnt down and is due to be demolished. I captured something that no longer exists.

One of the other aspects of UX is just this. Nobody else can go there now as it's gone.. forever.

Gosh that has changed, I hardly read ignited the place !
Nicely done , wonder where the squatters were? Perhaps you scared them off

We had that bad feeling that someone was behind the door. Not with an axe but there nevertheless. I have learned to trust my instincts, and you can't always bribe them with a fag (dizzy smokes, not me).

I always carry a few quid just in case, but to date I’ve never had to use it.
It was a right old fire damaged place, that just added to the atmosphere.

Unbelievable that someone has lived life there with tent. From exterior, the brick and concrete work looks pretty amazing. :-)

!tan - Please help me tip @slobberchops for this explorer.

I think that these rusty buildings might serve a purpose after all for those who really need a place to stay, for the homeless

I think that place could be rehabbed if it were in a nice neighborhoodso it would be worth the expense.
