Colouful Malacca, Malaysia 繽紛跳躍的馬六甲

Two years ago (wow! has it been that long?) I went to Malaysia for a few days. During my penultimate day there, I went to Malacca for a day trip and nearly ended up stranded there not being able to get back to Kuala Lumpur!! Luckily Team Malaysia was on hand to help me out, thanks guys!

THE TRADITIONAL SIDE OF MALACCA

One of the things that struck me about Malacca was how many different faces it has. I went on a Sunday, they cordon off the main streets from traffic, but there was still quite a lot of people around. I wandered around the back streets where there was less tourists and saw many beautiful buildings dotted around the city, it almost felt like I was not living in modern days. Then there were many traditional shops including one that makes shoes for three inch lotus feet - these are shoes for women who had bound feet in the old days.

THE FUNKY SIDE OF MALACCA

When I walked towards the riverside, I saw another side of Malacca. The colourful funky murals on the buildings was a sharp contrast to the traditional side of Malacca. This area was like a magnet for visitors, everyone there was vying for the perfect spot to get the Instagram moment. Who would pass on this opportunity? Not being an arty person, I couldn't understand the message the murals were conveying, do all murals have a message? I was content with being the shallow one day tourist in Malacca and focused on taking my not so instagrammable shots.

The funky mural wall led out to the riverside, this was the perfect place to sit and chill out, as one would do when you're here. However, you have to choose your spot carefully depending on the time of the day and the sun.

ACROSS THE RIVER

From here, one could see the other colourful buildings across the river. They were in a different style. One had different images of different females, a nod to the multi cultural society that Malaysia is made up of - Malay, Chinese, India, Nyonya...

I wandered off to the other side of the river to get a better look. Afterall, that was the whole point of my day trip, just to stroll around leisurely and aimlessly, that's the best way to explore in my opinion.

Not being an artist nor a botanist, I had no idea what these plants were, but they were pretty, I can tell you that. Time for another not so Instagram photo, I really must work on my posture.

A bit further down on this side of the river, is another different type of art display. A few beetles, the car not the bug, were cut in half and displayed outside a building. It was awesomely cool! Apparently this is a flea market, but I have no idea why such a cool place isn't opened on the weekend. In fact I have no idea why no one comes over to this side of the river. Maybe people don't like walking along the riverside. Oh well! Their lost, not mine.

And finally, yet more colour from Malacca. These colourful tricycle taxis were plentiful nearby St Paul's Church, one of Malacca's most famous landmarks. There was a colour, a cartoon character for everyone's liking assuming you are into these type of stuff. Sadly, they didn't have my favourite cartoon character, and there was only one of Baby Shark but not a whale, otherwise I might have considered taking a whale ride.

Just joking, this is too cheesy for me. And boy, were they annoyingly noisy!!!! I'll stick to the colourful side of Malacca thanks 😀

I like the colorful tricycles. This kind of transportation is so common here in our country but I've never seen one dressed up like these. I can just imagine the faces of the commuters when they see this. It's gonna be a certified hit :) Those VW Beetle display will drive my brother-in-law crazy. He's a Beetle enthusiast and actually restores them, especially the convertible types. The place looks quite interesting. Your photos really brought it to life. Don't bother improving your posture. It's so naturally cool. I like it :)

Maybe you could start a business in the Philippines, it might take off!!!

Beetles are a real classic, especially the older ones, Does your brother restore them as a hobby or as a business.

And thanks for your nice comment, I'm so chuffed 😄

Actually that was my brother-in-law's business in Manila for a long time before he retired. He's 72 years old now. But before, he'd convert Beetles into race cars with V8 engines. Race car afficionados used to seek him out to order his converted Beetles because they almost always win in street races ala Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift style. It was both a hobby and a business for him. He had a book which contained every Beetle convertible produced by VW complete with the year manufactured and the serial numbers of the roof mechanism. He'd go around all over the country looking for junked convertibles, checking his book and the serial numbers to ensure they were the real deal. He'd buy and restore them to their original make, complete with metal signal lights attached to the sides, cone shaped side view mirrors and flower vase in the console. Too bad not one of his sons took after his interest in cars. But he was and is still a certified Beetle geek.

Wow Malacca is indeed a very colorful place. I hope someday I could visit Malaysia, it will only take me about 3 hours or less travel by plain, the problem is covid but when everything goes well I will make sure I could spend time in Malaysia and perhaps stay in Malacca for one day.
