DATA: SAFETY MEASURES TO TAKE FOLLOWING THE TWITTER BAN IN NIGERIA

The Attorney General of Nigeria, Abubakar Malami, SAN has directed for the immediate prosecution of offenders of the Federal Government ban on Twitter operations in Nigeria. This followed the Twitter ban by the Nigerian government after the president's genocidal tweet was taken down.

I believe in the coming weeks we will see the law enforcement agencies take to the street to enforce these new decrees. I also expect that these agencies would excessive force on innocent young Nigeria. So in this post, i want to highlight measures you can take to protect yourself.

USE A VPN

So one of the most popular options for Nigerians who use Twitter is to use VPN services. Most of these VPN services are free and risky. I will suggest proton VPN. It is one of the free and secure VPN services out there.

USE TOR BROWSER

Given the events of the past few days, it is evident that the telcos are working hand-in-hand with the government. Data security is not guaranteed. So i will suggest you use the Tor browser which is one of the most secure ways to surf the internet anonymously. Also with the tor browser, you don't need to down a VPN app to access Twitter, it works seamlessly.

DELETE/HIDE THE TWITTER APP

I believe the police will harass a lot of young Nigerians these coming weeks and search their phones. So you don't want them finding anything incriminating. Delete the Twitter app from your phone and only access the app with a stationary device in the comfort of your home.

CREATE AN ANONYMOUS ACCOUNT

Everyone should have a burner account that cannot be traced to you anywhere. it is important to have some level of anonymity on the internet (this is comical coming from someone who has his face all over the internet)

PLAN TO MIGRATE

This might seem extreme but it is an opinion you should consider especially when you live under the dictatorship of a seemingly democratic system. Make you have your passport and emergency cash.

If you ever get caught for using the Twitter app, you might need legal protection. This group is seeking to help anyone arrested and prosecuted for expressing their freedom of speech.

I will also suggest you explore decentralized solutions like hive and its ecosystem of decentralized dapps (dbuzz,3speak, leofinance, etc). These are pro-free speech platforms with high censorship resistance.

I hope you found this information useful. Remain safe and keep fighting for your freedom

Well Done on this one... This VPN seems to be the most known one but like you said, it's not entirely secure. Having a burner phone is another good alternative for anyone that knows how to maintain an alias.

Well, l'm not going to anything at the moment for the sake of Twitter. My only concern is that we are living in a mess under some bunch of tyrannts. Funny enough, our Network providers do not care about maintenance of privacy or so.

We've got to watch our six.
It's very important.

well my cases I have transferred most of my sensitive information into my pc and hidden a few apps on my phone. my pc is mainly at home so it is relatively safe to use.

These are awesome tips man... I am yet to hide my twitter app yet but I would do that now. I would definitely try out that tor browser since you said it works seemlessly without using a vpn. I actually don't like VPN'S because they drain batteries.

well, there are some drawbacks to using tor browser. it is relatively slower but it is more secure than most of the VPN services out there.
