Hello everybody on Hive and especially the Hive Open Mic Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town South Africa!

This is Week 131 of the Hive Open Mic Challenge, and the theme for the week is "Orgullo Patrio" which means "National Pride"! What a lovely theme: I had no choice but to sing you South Africa's very beautiful and distinctive National Anthem "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" (God Bless Africa). Many people agree that it's one of the most beautiful and rousing National Anthems in the World.

What is very interesting about it is that it is in five completely different languages - isiXhosa, isiZulu, seSotho, Afrikaans and English! I will show you the lyrics and the translations down below.

I have a very fond memory of the National Anthem. I went to go watch our Springbok rugby team play against a special World 15 side that was comprised of some of the best players from the rest of the World. A famous local artist, Kurt Darren, stepped up to sing the National Anthem on the Sound System and the crowd sang along. Then, about half way through, the sound system failed, but the crowd carried on singing loudly right to the end. It was a very emotional moment of a whole crowd working in solidarity about something very important to us and it really moved the rugby players to try their best. I think I have found a video about that moment on another South African's Youtube channel where he also remembers the moment fondly here:

Lyrics - South African National Anthem

Verse 1 - isiXhosa and isiZulu

Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika
(God Bless Africa)
Maluphakanyisw' uphondo lwayo,
(Raise high Her glory)
Yizwa imithandazo yethu,
(Hear our Prayers)
Nkosi sikelela, thina lusapho lwayo
(God bless us, we her children)

Verse 2 - seSotho

Morena boloka setjhaba sa heso,
(God protect our nation)
O fedise dintwa le matshwenyeho,
(End all wars and tribulations)
O se boloke, O se boloke setjhaba sa heso,
(Protect us, protect our nation)
Setjhaba sa South Afrika - South Afrika.
(Our nation South Africa - South Africa)

Verse 3 - Afrikaans

Uit die blou van onse hemel,
(Ringing out from our blue heavens)
Uit die diepte van ons see,
(From the depth of our seas)
Oor ons ewige gebergtes,
(Over our everlasting mountains)
Waar die kranse antwoord gee,
(Where the echoing crags resound)

Verse 4 - English

Sounds the call to come together,
And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
In South Africa our land.

Yes, that does make it a very special Anthem! It was adopted when I was a child so I got to learn it young, but many older South Africans still struggle with the verses in languages they don't know well!

aww, I hear this song from my South African expat friends in Vietnam all the time. 😄 they seem to love it a lot and some of them got emotional whenever they showed me the song. Now I understand why. You've got the voice to sing a National Anthem!

Ah, there are a lot of challenges in South Africa with the politics, economy, crime - and so some people do choose to leave, but I have heard from many of them that they miss South Africa dearly. It is a very beautiful country with a very special energy. In fact, I have seen many people decide they miss it too much and decide to come back!

Thank you so much!

I see you are from Nigeria? Nigeria seems to have a much stronger presence on HIVE than South Africa! Almost nobody seems to know about it here!

Yes, I'm a Nigerian. And you're right, there are lot of Nigerians on hive. You can start making it known to your friends and relatives in South Africa as well, with time South Africans will have a strong presence here as well

Thank you Marelize! Now, you have posted enough, that I see you also sang at that concert with your friends? I saw a piano in the background while you playing violin? I'm sure the Hive Open Mic is something you could do!

Have you joined the Hive Open Mic Community yet?

Slow down cowboy! I can play some piano... but the only reason you saw photos of me with a mic infront of me is because my friends only keep me in the band if I do backing vocals, tambourine, piano, violin, shaker and provide snacks for the band and roll up cables....the price you pay to hang out with the cool kids😅
I recorded 3 songs this weekend for the 3 tunes Tuesday but was just too exhausted last night to post anything. Now to keep them till next week Tuesday or post them individually is the question. Is the open mic just for singing or instrumental aswell?

In other words I sing backing only if my life or reputation depend on it...

Well your current HIVE reputation is 51. There's also your reputation with me. Both depend on you singing LEAD. Haha 😉

Wow - hmmm, I don't know if I like this band... have you considered leaving them and forming another band? Maybe one that just stuffs "all" the cables into one plastic bag? Hahaha 😅

Three Tunes Tuesday doesn't really have any rules except which tags to use and making sure the person who started the tradition sees it. I can FB you that stuff. Personally, I like to make my own life incredibly difficult so I've imposed the tradition on myself of playing all three songs live in one go, and doing two covers and an original around a theme... a lot of other people just send in Youtube videos of the original songs.

I'm pretty sure I've seen instrumental posts for HIVE Open Mic (I have definitely seen Music Community posts like that besides yours). Every week there is a new theme, and I try my hardest to stick to it even if it means learning or creating something new. Here's this week's call out: https://ecency.com/hive-105786/@hiveopenmic/hive-open-mic-131-worldwide-live-music-event

Her comment: Wow friend you play and sing great

My response: Thank you so much! Perhaps it was the choice of song that helped. We love our anthem and the history behind it.

Mi respuesta: ¡Muchas gracias! Quizás fue la elección de la canción lo que ayudó. Nos encanta nuestro himno y la historia detrás de él.

Hi Jasper, it's a pleasure to meet you, I had not heard you before and you really surprised me; I like the sound you achieve, you have a great voice and you play amazing guitar, I must congratulate you because the South African Anthem was very nice in your interpretation!!!!

I liked that video you shared with us where the sound goes off during the game and the public and the players continue singing loudly, how beautiful is that feeling, when the homeland flows and is projected in solidarity and brotherhood!!!!

Friend you are a great artist, I have been able to see that you are very active in different communities, that's great, but also remember that in the case of our community it would be great that weekly you visit other artists and comment on their presentations since interaction is very valuable in this great family!!!!

It is a pleasure to meet you and thank you very much for joining us in this edition of the Hive Open Mic, we look forward to seeing you next week ¡Greetings! ¡You Rock! 🙌😀💛

Thank you so much for the wonderful things you said! Yes, I do make time to watch other people's Hive Open Mic posts, but I definitely also need to comment more as there are some amazing people out there! I'm really looking forward to seeing how everybody else tackles this week's theme!

It's been really great to find challenges that force me to learn new songs. I don't think I was spending enough time on music before, and I think I am improving because of this.

Cool anthem.
And your performance made it so beautiful.

It's a very cool anthem - there was a time in the late 80's and early 90's where it looked like it would take a Civil War to end Apartheid, but we got there peacefully in the end - which was why Nelson Mandela and FW de Klerk won Nobel Peace Prizes.

Hi Jasper,
Yes, this is a beautiful anthem.. and, wow, those languages add sooo much!
I loved every bit of it!

Woah,,,so many languages. I'm not sure I could handle those. Well done though.

It's really unusual in the way that the melody changes as it goes through the verses. I doubt that any other National Anthem is anything like it.

Well there's definitely some history behind it... The Afrikaans part was the National Anthem of what we call the Old South Africa during Apartheid (forced racial segregation). When Apartheid ended in the early 1990s we became the New South Africa with a new flag. The Anthem was also expanded. Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika was originally a hymn, but gained great significance during the struggle. Even a white band called Bright Blue disguised it in their beautiful song called "Weeping" as a protest against Apartheid... I must take that one on sometime!

I think a lot more people need to realize that you can love your country and still challenge its Government to be better! South Africa has a lot of issues, but I believe a lot of people who leave land up missing it very much!

It really is a melting pot of cultures and history. Not many people know that the British basically invented Concentration Camps during the Anglo-Boer War where they kept Afrikaans women and children as prisoners. The Afrikaans basically invented Guerilla warfare in response.

Throw in some history of the Zulu culture becoming powerful warriors and chasing other tribes inland, and even winning a battle against the British (I sang a song about that here - https://ecency.com/hive-105786/@jasperdick/pzrritet) and you really have a story where it's amazing that we are one united country now! The challenges continue but it is a beautiful place!
