Puffed Up for Feathered Friends

This puffed up Woodpecker is keeping warm on a cold Wisconsin morning. Birds fluff up when the temperature is cold, to trap air in their feathers. Heat from a birds body warms the air between its feathers.

After the temperatures begin to rise, they resume a more normal Woodpecker shape and go searching for breakfast.

They come to the suet feeders that I have on my back deck, and they get pretty used to me coming and going. If the feeder is empty they sit out there and shout until I go out to fill it.

Many of them are from this years hatch and their mamas introduced them to the feeders when they were just out of the nest. They are the onrs who have high expectations!

If after such a long time it seems that way. But it's always nice to see that many people like our posts. Your photos are always very good

Nature is amazing! I was wondering how come the birds aren't cold at wintertime. Wonderful shots Melinda 😍

After so many years I get to see Woodpecker through your photography. Woodpecker don't love cities, you know.
Thanks for sharing. :)

I wonder what the poor little pointy-nosers are going to look like tomorrow morning. It's supposed to be below zero. Do they ever wind up looking like a perfect sphere with a beak?

Nice photos of them. They do look a bit cold!

It must be like wearing a nice warm down coat! I always wonder about their poor little feet.

Yeah... You would think they would get frostbite. Maybe there's some biological trick they do to keep their toes warm.

I was wondering how birds kept warm during the winter. It sure doesn't look like a woodpecker when puffed up. Great capture!
