Some Interesting facts about mysterious bird

There are some mythical stories about owls. It is said that when Genghis khan was hiding from his enemies in small coppice, an owl rested above him in the tree, which caused his chasers to think that no man could be hidden here. In Africa, owls are considered as harbingers of death. If one saw an owl or heard its voice, someone was going to die. Generally, they are considered as harbingers of bad luck, death or bad health. This belief is popular even today. However, in Japan, owls are regarded as good luck.

Owls are nocturnal birds which include around 200 species. They have large broad head with binocular vision and have feathers which are adopted for silent flight. They hunt normally small mammals, birds, insects and some species of them can also hunt fish. They are found nearly everywhere in the world except polar ice caps and remote islands.

Owls have large forward-facing eyes, hawk-like ear holes and typically with flat face. They have eyes on the side of head. Normally they are farsighted so they are unable to see anything within few centimetres. In low light, their far vision is wonderful.

Owls can rotate their head and neck to 270°. Their necks are flexible as they contain 14 vertebrae as compared to human which have seven. Different species of owl produce different sounds which help them in finding their mates or alerting presence of potential competitors.

Owls are carnivorous and they eat mainly insects and small rodents like mice, rats and hares. They are specifically adopted to hunt fish. As they are found nearly all parts of the world in different ecosystem, their characteristics and hunting skills vary from species to species.

Most of the owls have distinctive ability to fly silently and slowly as compared to other birds of prey. Their nocturnal lifestyle and their silent flight give them advantage over their prey. Their feathers are normally larger than other average birds’ feathers. The surface of the feathers is covered with velvety structure that absorbs the sound of the wings when moving. These unique characteristics can reduce the noise frequencies above 2 KHz.

Eyesight is another characteristic of the owl that helps in capturing nocturnal prey. They have large eyes in comparison to their skulls. Since their eyes are fixed in holes, they can’t move their eyes, rather they swivel their head to view their surroundings. They can swivel their heads through angle of 270° without movement; thus reducing the amount of sounds the owl makes as it waits for its prey.
