A mud pool spa.

(Edited)

The salty ocean air makes the rain tacky, and the birds like to have a mud pool bath after the rain.
115.JPG

A flock of European Starlings took turns to dive down from a big tree above a mud pool of water.

The rain had cleared and it was time for a pool party. The Starlings are very busy birds and everyone had a turn for a shower and a shine. Notably not all of the birds came down at the same time, as the majority remained in the tree, while only small groups came down to the pool in turn.
I suppose the ones up in the tree were keeping an eye out for predators.

The two photos below show the first group in action.

149.JPG

Then it was the second groups turn.
156.JPG

169.JPG

In the meantime a Pied Crow came in to land near its partner.
008.JPG

Lowering the landing gear here below.
009.JPG

And finally the landing was perfect. All fleas, this is your pilot. We have landed safely and you can take your seatbelts off now :)
013.JPG

Here below, we had the third group.
179.JPG

The funny thing was that none of the birds made a peep while they were in the pool. I love to practice my opera voice in the shower, although some say that it sounds like a screeching baboon in pain :)
155.JPG

Another interesting thing was that all of the groups entered the pool from the same left hand side.
018.JPG

At the left of the picture below, you can see the big tree that was above the pool.
139.JPG

The white clouds were all rained out and they were on their way to be refilled with water, as the weatherman reckons that we will have more rain over the next few days. Today was the first day that it felt like winter and I love the cool temperatures. We have become used to the strong winds over time and when it blows from the west, at the ocean side, we can smell the salt in the air, as we are only 15 to 20 minutes away from the sea depending on the traffic.

So for me it feels like we live between two worlds. The mountains with its nature and the farms at the one side and the wide Atlantic ocean at the other side. We regularly visit both worlds and they are as different as chalk and cheese, but both worlds have their own beautiful characteristics.
One can listen to the song of the ocean and breathe its salty flavor, or one can visit the stoic silence of the big mountains and breathe its fresh mountain air. Now that's what I call being blessed.
Let me have your thoughts below in the comments.

I hope that you enjoyed the pictures.

And That's All Friends.

Bath time, how the birds enjoy mud pools, a time for you to relax unwind watching them for once just being happy cleaning themselves. Perhaps silence reigns, not to attract predators.

Sea with aroma of kelp and salt, Cape waters have a definite perfume on the air.

Have a wonderful day.

So right you are Lady Joan, as it is indeed so relaxing to watch the bird action. More than half of the flock were sitting in the tee above the pool and they were the lookouts, as the tree is in the dog park.

That is indeed such a great thing about the Cape air.

Hope that you will have a good Friday.

Sniff of kelp and salt in itself is rewarding to sit watching seabirds.

Inland birds tend to move in crowds making it interesting to watch their reaction when prodding the water for morsels to eat.

Happy Friday!

So true and the sea air is also good for the lungs.

Inland flocks are always interesting and yes, their lifestyles are different and indeed interesting. I also like to get the lonely raptors on the camera.

Friday as you know is done and our 3 power cuts are now also done. Next one is at 12pm.
Hope that your Friday was better.

Would love to get on a beach, knowing dogs love a river swim I dare not, Ecoli still rife, almost a year since last beach walk, sad!

Fish Eagle was riding high on thermals the other day calling, too high to capture!

Power cuts through ones day of off kilter, always playing catch up with everything!

A very sad situation and one wonders if the beaches will ever be the same again. I read a piece stating that Durban is slowly falling apart. Ecoli is a big danger.

So great always to hear that distinctive Fish Eagle call and it always stops me in my tracks.

A real problem and now, all of a sudden, they have started to drop the levels. Something weird is going on methinks.

Our region is a cesspool under ANC control, really hope IFP with DA will obtain a bigger footprint in 2024.

Stages dropping always indicative of problems arising, or as usual, we are being lied to! Top heavy with no one willing/educated to do an honest days work methinks.

All that I know is that the country is in real trouble this time round and if we are not careful, we will slide into a junk abyss.

You said this so well, as yesterday we were promised Level 2 and this morning, they changed it to Level4.

ANC top ranking have got rich! Where in the world do majority need protection with BBEEE? Turned politics into a circus, leaving the destitute worse off, still stealing, top heavy parliament all over paid, few with the brain/education to lead.

When are the people going to stand up against them, many questions to answer about lockdowns, forced vaccinations, state of disaster for whatever they feel in the heat of the moment..., electricity problems since 2008, on-going water problems? When pushed into corner have a commission never take heed of outcome!

Murky water and mud pool moments, Colonialism and Apartheid, blame game, never shoulder responsibility.

Wow, you have really unloaded here and desperation faces all of us in this country.
Something will have to give in order to break the monopoly.

If everyone were to work hand in hand, with the same focus then things can improve, but disunity rules.
Sadly, it is all about the power and the money to feather personal nests.

Money and power have influenced no doubt. East/West meddling another problem no one speaks about, we the people need to sit down and talk, with no outsiders pushing and pulling!

!LUV our land, love our people with the right leaders perhaps we stand a chance.

Money, the root of all evil and so well displayed in this country. SA has always been raped for its minerals and in fact the entire African continent is devastated by all first world countries.
The problem here is that there are no actions after the talks.

Seems the leaders have all died and we simply stumble forth from hero to zero.

Perhaps the birds maintain a habit or some sort of ritual of entry or precaution to their water pools.

It really is a great blessing to be able to have access to the sea in such a short time and also to be able to enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the mountains.

Very nice pictures dear @papilloncharity. Greetings, take care, thanks for sharing and I hope to read you again soon!

Perhaps you are right, and they might even enter at that side because of the wind direction.

A real blessing and now we are searching for a home that would have a view of both the ocean and the mountains. There are such homes here, but they are terribly expensive, way more than we can earn in a lifetime.

I am glad that you liked the photos and the story @bravofenix and thank you for the appreciation.
Thank you also for the kind wishes.
Blessings and you must also take care.

Woo, unfortunately always the properties near the sea have quite high prices, and if it is about visual spectacles even more.

However, I hope you will be successful in this new project of the dream house by the sea and with views to the mountains!

Wow being nestled between 2 wonders of nature and still be in the comfortable setting of farmland sounds like a dream.

Isn’t it fun to watch the wildlife frolicking like children, though much quieter here it seems. I could go for a mud spa right about now. We are looking at the same blue sky but the ground is vastly different!

It is a dreamland for sure my friend and we are happy here. Shhh! If the birds hear you saying that they are frolicking like children, they might fly over and poop on your car 😊
That is a lovely picture and so sad that we get no snow here. Only light drifts of snow on the mountain peaks. But, yes, it is the same sky.

The Starlings picture turn out great, describe all the motion of the moment with a great scenario, look like a great time just looking at them doing there thing, its curious the difference between nature and humans, how taking a bath is so simple for nature and could turn out complicated for humans with all the cleaning products and the water temperature, etc

Yeah, you are so right as we as humans have changed the bath sequence totally. I remember on the farm as kids that we simply got into a bath with a block of homemade soap, washed, got out and dried ourselves. Straight forward and the adults did the same. Nowadays they have all kinds of soaps and shampoos and a range of other products that they use. Luke warm and cold water is the best for one's health, but some will not bath unless there are steam to show that the water is hot.
Such is life.
