Feathered Friends: The Great Blue Heron

My entry to the #featheredfriends community hosted by @melinda010100 is one of my favorite birds, the Great Blue Heron.

These are some photos I’ve taken this summer of the great bird.

They go south when the cold temperatures set in and return here in the spring.

Herons like to hunt for food in the shallow water along the shore

This heron is waiting and watching for dinner in the water, by the dam, along the Confederation Trail in Montague, PEI.

I was lucky to be close to the this Great Blue Heron while walking on the trail. The Montague River is on one side of the trail and the heron likes to hunt there as well as in the dam on the other side.

Perhaps I spooked the bird for the heron takes flight and shows a enormous wingspan.

Another time I saw the Great Blue in a tree along the trail.

Thanks Mike. When you see them standing, the size of the wings aren’t evident until they take flight.

Graceful big birds of the waterways, nice photography and post Jo.

Yes I too must get more settled and do a post on nature, just been super topsy turvy of late.

Have a great day in the land of PEI

Big part of life I am missing at the moment is going out for walks, seeing your birds, taking us for walks makes life more bearable!

Great post and photos Jo! It's always a thrill to see a Great Blue Heron! You have some fantastic shots of the Heron. It's so cool to catch a photo of one in flight so I especially love that photo and the reflection photo too..I actually love all of them though! 😊 💞

There are a few herons in the area where my parents live, but I could never manage to get close enough for a photo. I couldn't even hear myself sneaking up to them, but they did 😂
It's cool that yours are more used to people, Jo, so you could take some nice photos of this big and beautiful bird.

They are hard to capture a photo. I’ve tried to take other photos of other great blue herons but they would take off before I could get close enough. I have been luckier on the Confederation trail.

Thanks Johann And for tip and goodies.😊

I hope your Wednesday is wonderful dear Johann.

Your photos look as if you were very close to them. I think it depends if there are many people walking in the area or on the trail, so the herons get more used of people.
I'd be glad if I could take any pictures of the herons, but one day I will be patient enough and just wait for one to fly by 😊

You are very welcome Jo, have a wonderful day 🤗

I had a pair of them that were nesting in the swampy part of our land up on the Canadian Border, actually in upper Michigan. It was a summer house and I have never seen it in the winter, although, once, it snowed when I was up there. It was May 5, 1989, I believe! I knew then, I would never live there!

I love your feathered friend and do you know if they nest up there? The juvies are downright silly looking with hair that stands straight up and piercing eyes!

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Denise. It was late in the season for a snowstorm but it happens sometimes.

I’ve never seen the young ones but I was told they had a nest with young ones on the dam side of the trail.

Thanks for your lovely comments and tip Denise.

Have a wonderful Thursday. 💕

What a beautiful bird the Blue Heron is unfortunately we don't see them in our state but more up in the tropical area of Australia and your photos of the Blue Heron are beautiful.
