IS GOD THE AUTHOR OF SICKNESS?

Despite clear evidence in scripture concerning the complete work of Christ on Calvary to guarantee our freedom and healing, some believers still argue that sickness and disease could be used by God to afflict His children in order to humble and refine them.

I believe that God has a better way of doing this, not through sickness. In most cases, they quote the experience of Job in the Old Testament. They have completely failed to realize that God was not the originator of Job’s sickness. It was the devil who afflicted Job.

God only allowed Satan to touch the body of Job. Today, God is interested in your healing and not how He will afflict you with sickness and disease, particularly because of what Christ has done for us. Christ, Himself took our sicknesses and diseases. God may allow a sickness for a purpose on a believer but He does not originate it. Sickness is a curse and not a blessing, so it cannot come from God. An understanding of the causes of sickness would help us realize better how health has been guaranteed in the word of God.

It is significant to note that behind most illness is the devil, who comes to steal, to kill and to destroy (John 10:10). It has been medically proven that most gastric disorders, skin diseases, asthma and back pain are caused by unhealthy states of mind such as anxiety, guilt, bitterness and resentment. Sin could bring sickness not only to the person who sinned but also to the person sinned against. But in both cases, God has provided a means out. The truth is that, God lacks sickness and therefore cannot afflict anyone with it. Sickness could be caused by the following:

• Sin – 1 Cor. 11:29-30.

• A distorted state of mind.

• Demonic manifestations – Luke 8:26-33; Acts 10:38

• Natural causes – when we disobey the laws of nature.

But as we have already noted, God has provided solutions to all these.
If the arguments put forward by some believers, as stated earlier are anything to go by, then we would find great contradictions in scriptures. How would we reconcile this,

“And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the Gospel of the Kingdom, and healing all manner of sicknesses and all manner of diseases among the people” (Matt. 4:23).

Jesus could not have gone about healing the sick and diseased if it was not His Father’s will and business. Jesus said,

<”The things I hear from my Father that I do”.

We are told in Acts 10:38 that it was God who was going about healing the sick through Jesus.
