METAMORPHOSIS OF WOMAN OF SAMARIA.

The conversion of the woman of Samaria is stunning example for all time. It rivals the conversion of the Saul of Tarsus, but without the drama. This woman whom Jesus met at Jacob well at Sychar in Samaria was to spark an outbreak of the gospel in her city; But if the woman of Samaria lived today, she would have been renowned more for her nuisance value than for her potential as an itinerant evangelist. By her conduct, she would have provoked reprimand from at least four groups of people.

Married men would have excoriated her, branding her lifestyle with tongues of hypocritical condemnation. They would poke fun and make lewd remarks about her in private. Of course she would have secret admirers among them, for her wanton brazenness. But they would publicly keep their distance from her.

Married women would have dreaded her presence. If she as much as smiled in the direction of a husband, the poor spouse would be hastily ushered out of sight by a panicky wife, out of reach of the lethal charms of dubious ‘husband snatcher’. The married women would have argued vehemently that her most enduring contribution to society was the number of marriages she had caused to crash against the rock of divorce. They would have been upset she set a poor example of women folk.

Spinsters and the ingénues, on the other hand, would have studied her antics with envy, wondering the secret of her charm. They ponder how she readily ensnared eligible bachelors while they scoured the streets of Sychar for ‘Mr Right’? Some might go as far as warming their way into close friendship with her hoping the attraction would rub off!

The other group that would not have been perplexed by the woman would have been the clergy. Parish priest(s) or pastor(s) or ‘Deliverance’ ministers would expectedly have been anxious to take her through the course of frenzied deliverance sessions, or for exorcism, to evict the demons of promiscuity and odious seducing spirits tormenting her soul and ensnaring her ‘victims’. Surely, the woman of Samaria would have presented an interesting case study for the local clergy.

However, when the Messiah met the woman of Samaria, He reacted differently; He did not inveigh against her in any manner. Jesus had an instant insight to what the wayward woman lacked. He knew her overriding need was not a tirade against dodgy morals or a reminder of a fiery rendezvous in hell for adulterers and fornicators. To the Master, the woman of Samaria did not cut the image of a ‘wayward, rotten man eater’ at all. When He directly addressed her, His tone was bereft of any trace of condemnation.

When the Author of Life confronted the woman of Samaria, He sought to win her friendship and respect. Because He pictured a prospective evangelist with a testimony to save a city! The Repairer of the Breach knew what spiritual procedure was required and refrained from overkill. He let the ‘notorious’ woman of Sychar become conscious that her immoral lifestyle was neither hidden nor acceptable. He exposed her objectionable conduct to the blazing light of Eternal Truth, and the white fire of revival kindled at Jacob’s well. The woman of Samaria met with Jesus and immediately set upon a different course.

Oh, the woman of Samaria knew she had not encountered a Jewish soothsayer or a blatant schemer at Jacob’s well. The woman knew she had not just crossed paths with a pedestrian palmist or fortune-teller, camped at a community facility, scheming to inveigle naïve women.

There were soothsayers back then, of course. There have always been mediums and spiritists and other pretenders who seek to foretell the future. But the woman of Samaria discerned the difference, by grace. She knew she had encountered the foretold Christ of Israel! Oh, thank God she was not too far-gone into sin as be totally blind to salvation when she came face to face with the Messiah!

The woman of Samaria had important clues. Like the fact that it would take one out-of-the-ordinary Jew to regard a Samaritan, man or woman. In addition, it would take a one-in-several-thousands Jew to ask a favor from a Samaritan woman. The woman faced an out-of-the-ordinary Jew and was convicted of the fact at once! She knew beyond a shadow of doubt she had encountered the Christ who gives the Living Water!

As she faced the Revealer of secrets, her inner man was purged and her soul received cleansing virtue. An unforgettable rendezvous with the Messiah made the woman of Samaria judge her lifestyle, repent of licentious living, and set upon a fresh course.

The Woman of Samaria went on to achieve an enviable goal without elaborate preparation for a citywide crusade. This woman who formerly had a way with men now brought the hope of the Gospel to her people. She would go on to hold the first citywide preaching in favor of Christ in Sychar!

At Jacob’s well which had become a memorial to her city and its people, the woman got saved unexpectedly and went to town with the Gospel! No, she did not wait to attend bible school or the seminary! The woman of Samaria returned from Jacob’s well armed not with her water pot but a testimony of great conviction. The message from her lips was not wordy or particularly elegant. It was this simple:

‘Come, see a man which told me all things that I ever did: is not this the Christ?’ John 4:29

People were led to the Savior by this testimony. And the woman of Samaria’s potential was fulfilled, surpassed even, by the work of grace. No doubt she achieved beyond her expectation!

Yes! Jesus touched me and my changes
Yes Jesus touched and my life cha-nged
Since HE touched me, Ive decided that I will live for hime every day
For touched me and my life was changed, eeeeeh!
For he touched me and my life was changed Author Unknown
