The Second Coming Of Christ

avatar

The second coming of Jesus is an event yet to come according to biblical predictions by the holy prophets, the apostles and Jesus himself. His first visit to earth was quiet– a little helpless baby, born with a destiny to die on the cross for sin he did not commit in order to bring salvation and redemption to humankind.

Beloved, we are living in the last days and we have become witnesses to biblical prophecies being fulfilled in our time. The false prophets and teachers who turn away people’s faith from Christ are here now- murder, sexual immorality, lust for wealth, position and power has become the order of the day. Scoffers say Jesus will surely never come again but the delay in his coming is to ensure the salvation of all his children.

2 Peter 3:12-13 You look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells"

The day of the Lord will be terrible. It is the day that God will purify the heavens and the earth by destroying them completely with fire. Then he will create a new heaven and earth where righteousness dwells. For Christians, it will be a day of great joy, but to those who did not believe in Christ, it will be a day of judgement.

What is expected of Christians as we look forward to this day? Jesus said we should occupy till He comes

  1. Since everything will be destroyed, we must be wise by putting our trust in what is lasting and eternal instead of the pursuit of worldly pleasures, riches and power which will soon pass away.
  2. We must preach the Gospel of Christ to all people with haste to ensure their repentance and salvation before He comes.
  3. The church must make Christ known to the people through teachings and bible study so that they will be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him when he comes (2 Peter 3:14).
  4. We must also teach people to learn to persevere in the face of persecution (Hebrews 10:25).
Jesus in today’s Gospel, told the Jewish leaders to give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God, when asked if it was right or wrong to pay tax to Caesar to trap Him( Mark 12:13-17).

Jesus avoided their tricky question, but made it clear to them that, Christians have dual citizenship; their nation and, the Kingdom of Heaven. The nation requires that we pay money for service and benefits we receive from the government e.g. Education, water, electricity, good roads, health care etc. The Kingdom of Heaven requires that we pledge our primary obedience and commitment to God. Christians therefore have obligations to both God and their nation. The Laws of our nation that do not conflict with that of God such as all the protocols put in place to avoid the spread of Covid-19 must by obeyed.

However, when the laws of the nation conflict with that of God’s Kingdom, our duty to God must come first.
Finally, brethren, as we patiently wait for His coming, let us pray consistently without ceasing because the Lord himself started his ministry with prayer and ended it with prayer.
Peace!
