Artist Interview.jpg

The lightpainting community is small and spread all over the world. A close association,
which is perceived far too little in the world of photography. We want to change this. In
order to bring you some artists closer, we asked some artists, which are active on HIVE,
to introduce themselves and to answer a few questions about light painting and their
relation to it. Today we would like to introduce you ...

- NIKOLAY TREBUKHIN -

01. Please introduce yourself shortly. Name, Age and where you from etc.

My name is Nikolai, I am 46 years old, was born in a small town near Moscow, and now
I live in Moscow.

02. How and why did you start Light Painting?

At the beginning of 2015, I came across several images of light painting. I decided to
try to do something similar and I did it. Then I began to get acquainted with the work of
bright artists around the world and develop my skills.

03. What means Light Painting for you? What is your motivation? What drives you?

For me, light painting is an opportunity to do something unusual, interesting with the
help of various things from everyday life, which would seem completely unsuitable for
creating drawings with light. Probably this is the motivation to constantly create new
and unique. I am simply drawn to the desire to create, and this is not worth fighting.

04. What gear do you always carry with you?

Constantly with myself, I certainly do not wear anything that I usually use. But for
filming, I usually do a set of tools for a specific drawing. And in stock are several
permanent flashlights, plastic tubes, Bengal lights of steel wool, and other things in case
something goes wrong

05. What is your favorite environment to shoot in?

Probably I still love to work in open places. A large selection of different locations
gives me the opportunity to apply my skills or experience something new. At home, I
am limited in the use of all my tools, but at the same time it encourages the application
of knowledge in a limited space and the discovery of new ways of drawing with light.
For some time I have not been able to paint with light in a photo studio, but now I have
it, and I try to experiment with light sources so that later I can do it in the air or in other
places.

06. What is your Workflow?

If this is not something specific and planned, such as shooting by order or photo
shoot, then I determine on the spot what I want to do. Inspiration usually comes in
place. Because even having planned some drawings, I immediately come up with a lot
of new or improved ones. And you have to stop yourself, due to time limitations or the
desires of my assistants and models.

07. Who or what inspires you?

Anything! Even looking at some objects or phenomena around you, you can figure out
how to develop or apply this. Commercials, pictures on the Internet, drawings of artists,
films, animation and almost everything that is perceived visually can give inspiration.
When I listen to music, I imagine how my drawings in combination with it might look.
Also, when communicating with on the topic of light painting and exchange of opinions,
great ideas arise for implementation. I usually try to write down an idea that appears,
but a tenth comes to implementation, the rest is accumulated....

08. Do you have 3 Lightpainters you would like to have a colaboration with?

It is difficult for me to choose only 3 people from a huge number of talented lighting
artists. Rather, I could name those whom I would like to learn and gain experience from
communicating with them. I really like light calligraphy and the creativity of people like
Sam Mass Heuzé, Francois Aenishanslin (Cisco) and Julien Breton.

09. What was your most memorable Lightpainting experience, event, or moment?

Usually there is a story behind any photograph.
All memorable moments were associated with overcoming the obstacles to creating a
picture of light and gaining satisfaction after its implementation. This winter shooting,
when the batteries in the camera and flashlights froze, and the sand dunes in the
Moroccan desert, which had to go with equipment. It’s also long trips and long night-
time shots frame by frame to get the perfect picture. Stones, rocks, water. But this is all
nothing compared to the result after all the tests. This is what I like and makes me do it
again and again.

10. What are your best or most favourite 3 pictures?

I don’t know how much these photos are the best in execution or perception of those
who look at them, but I like the tones by the sensations that I received by creating
them and seeing the result. and I was pleased. I think that if you enjoy what you are
doing and what you are doing, this is the best reward.
