Since the abolition of slave trade most people across the world haven't realized that there's this rise in modern slavery in Europe and America's and most of the victims of this modern slavery are from African descent and other low income countries of the world.

One thing is become a victim of slavery another thing is to be stuck in the act with no one to liberate them.

Modern slavery comes in form of forced labour or forced marriages as well as child labour and this act is found in all parts of the world.

The number of people trapped in forced labour or forced marriage and other crises has swelled by a fifth in recent years to about 50 million on any given day, the United Nations’ International Labour Organization (ILO) said on Monday.
The study by the UN agencies for labour and migration along with the Walk Free Foundation found that at the end of last year, more than half of those had been forced to work against their will and the rest forced into marriage, the ILO said.Source

The rise in forced labour or forced marriage is overwhelming and for the UN to indicate that about 50 million people across the world are trapped in forced labour means that victims are not doing the act according to their will but are forced to work and do dirty jobs.

The figure above shows that nearly one out of 150 people are caught in forced labour and forced marriage, which are described as modern slavery. Most victims families are indebted to those that they're married to and others are trapped because of threat, violence and abuse of power as well as other coercive acts.

Making an individual or group of people to work against their will is a breach of their human rights of freedom as enshrined by the universal declaration of human rights.

Due to the powers involved in this modern slavery many cannot come out of it and not only that the network of people involved are usually those in high place of authority and very rich people.

The UN had set a goal to eradicate all forms of modern slavery by 2030, but the number of people caught up in forced labour or forced marriage ballooned by 10 million between 2016 and 2021, according to a new report.Source

The 2030 deadline to eradicate modern slavery have been faced with a high rise of the situation in terms of statistics. The last 5 years have recorded about 10 million forced labour and forced marriages. This means that more resources that weren't budgeted for are needs to come in if the United Nations will win the war against modern slavery.

This shoot in numbers of forced labour and forced marriages is caused by the covid-19 pandemic, which saw a vast majority of workers losing their jobs, leading to high indebtedness, while other causes of the increase is the rise in conflicts across the world that have led to the displacement of many families and their source of livelihood as well as climate change.

According to the ILO Director General Guy Ryder, the organization have relaxed in focusing on the recruitment exercises across the world in terms of forced labour and the need to become more active in correcting what was wrong this few years.

It should be noted that women and children are the most vulnerable in terms of forced labour and accounts for one out of five victims of forced labour.

What can we do about it

Countries like Mauritania, China, Russia, Taiwan, Vietnam, and even places like Belarus or Ukraine shows that slavery is still active and well function... Sad but true.

It's old fashioned but has resurfaced in a new way known as forced labour and forced marriages.
