Brazil: police shoot on indigenous people

On 24 June a massacre took place in the territory of Guapoy, precisely in the municipality of Amambai in the south of the state of Mato Grosso, on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. The Guarani - Kaiowá population, the largest indigenous people in the country, also present in Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina, is involved.

According to reports, last Friday the Brazilian military police raided, apparently without any court order or order, with the aim of removing the indigenous people who had occupied the area, because they considered those as part of their ancestral territories.

As the Landless Rural Workers' Movement, a Brazilian political-social movement fighting for land reform, writes in an official statement, the State of Mato Grosso is the scene of constant massacres.

Already in 2016 the world's attention shifted to this area when in the Municipality of Caarapò, a violent attack by the fazendeiros caused the death of a 23-year-old indigenous youth, as well as injuring several other people including a 12-year-old child.

In recent decades, the Guarani have suffered genocidal violence, slavery and racism by those who want to rob them of land, resources and workforce.Indigenous blood shed in exchange for more profits, more money for some transnational farms. More money for the banks, more money for the farmers.

They write again from the Movement of rural landless workers, who then ask to open an international campaign among human rights bodies to denounce and investigate the murders of indigenous people.

According to what was reconstructed by the local media, the agents opened fire on the population, hitting children and adults alike. Officially there is talk of 2 deaths, but the indigenous community speaks of 4 deaths in addition to about fifteen wounded hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

The government of Mato Grosso would not have given explanations as to why the operation was carried out without court orders and above all why it was the military police and not the federal police, which usually deal with issues relating to indigenous people, who acted.

The Indigenous Missionary Council, which has been following the story for years, warns that there is a risk that the situation could explode into an escalation of violence worse than that which occurred in Caarapò in 2016. The Amambai reserve, in fact, is the second largest of Mato Grosso do Sul in terms of population: there are about 10 thousand indigenous people.

Police are not people, they could do the worst thing you can imagine if they get the order to do it, and they excuse themselves saying they were following orders...

All those policemen should go on a court process and pay for their crimes
