Mahsa Amini's death inflames Iran, will the regime fall?

While in the Europe there is a risk of a nuclear war, there are also very important news in the Middle East. In fact, in Iran, the people have been in revolt for about a week.

The spark that ignited the protest was the news of the killing by the police of Mahsa Amini, a girl from Iranian Kurdistan stopped by the authorities because of how she wore the veil, which is mandatory for law in the Islamic Republic. She died a few days later from the beatings received.

The protest that began in Tehran is raging throughout the country, including in other major cities and peripheral areas. But this time the characteristics are different and lead us to believe that the political and religious power in office since 1979 is at risk.

In Iran in recent years there have often been vehement demonstrations at the national level, including with Molotov cocktails. The reasons are different: from the rise in the price of bread, to the water supply to the support of governments for foreign issues in the adjacent areas. For a welding of the demands of the different sections of the population, which have not been seen since the 1979 revolution.

What is changing is that now the various social instances seem to be strengthened together, for a common protest against a regime that is more military than religious. More attentive to the preservation of power than to the defense of Islamic dictates. And so even the most conservative fringes of the country, hit by the sanctions, are beginning to feel a certain impatience. Furthermore, they feel religious obligations as misleading and exaggerated.

The same sad case of the news has a different symbolic meaning. When a few years ago it was Sahar Khodayari who died by setting herself on fire after being informed by the authorities of a probable sentence of six months in prison for having illegally entered a stadium, the death of Mahsa Amini at the direct hands of the police opened the field to a general and angry indignation. Precisely because the first had committed suicide, the second was killed by the authorities.

But it is also a fact of social origins: Amini came from Iranian Kurdistan and belonged to a humble family, very different from that of Sahar Khodayari, coming from the affluent northern area of Tehran.

The issue of the headscarf is now no longer seen as a cultural whim by progressive, wealthy women, mostly from the center of the capital. Now, however, it is also involving humble women, those from the suburbs and rural areas.

It will now be necessary to understand what the regime intends to do, which has ruled Iran since 1979. Since that is Ruhollah Khomeyni, Great ayatollah, he became the spiritual and political leader of his country as Supreme Leader of the Iran from 1979 to 1989. His government, which ousted the Shahs of Persia from the country, was inspired by the Islamic religion from a Twelver Shiite perspective, and was set up in accordance with a strict fundamentalist approach.

The country in these over 40 years has alternated phases of timid openings and decisive closings, based on who ruled. It had initiated a decisive opening towards the West, thanks to the government of the moderate Rohani. However, the current government seems to have gone back and this time perhaps for the last.

Iran is at a crossroads: the repression could be further, restoring power which, however, could thus appear further hostile and violent, to the point of generating new impatience, especially in the new generations born after the 2000s.

Or, it could make concessions, but this could appear as a sign of weakness and lead the protesters to believe that the time has come to overthrow the regime.

One solution for the Tehran regime could be to call new elections, which could bring the country back to a more moderate government, at least to give a semblance of change and openness.

I think with the help of the protest the people's rights can be restored. Imagine the loss of a little girl and now what will be the hope of the family. That's not fair according to human rights. Greetings @davideownzall

Τhe fact that West act like only in Iran there is female oppression is very interesting! In Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, a girl can also go outside with a G string! 😂

Of course, my friend, I should not fail to mention something that is not written almost anywhere! The unfortunate woman who died in Iran and caused all these "spontaneous" demonstrations, was of Kurdish origin. Immediately after her death, citizens of Kurdish and Azeri origin took to the streets first! All this after the agreement for the sale of unmanned aircraft from Iran to Russia. No sympathy for any oppressive regime, but let's not pretend we live in a perfect world! My wishes! Keep up your nice posts!
