Do you have questions about communities? Fire away!
Before steemit.com and steempeak.com upgraded their main sites you could see many "hive" tags.
I saw before the upgrade of the main sites there were some people complaining about these ugly names. Rightfully!
But... the plan was all along not to show them, instead to show the pretty name of the community, and that's what you see if you go to any community on steemit.com or steempeak.com. Along with all the other options to manage a community.
However, if someone uses any other interface they still see "hive" names. Just because an interface creates a community, it doesn't mean they have support for Hive communities. I can and have created a community. You can create a community.
Even if an interface links its community to its interface, it doesn't mean they support Hive communities. But maybe they don't need do.
But a general interface will likely need to support Hive communities for the convenience of their users. So far only steemit.com and steempeak.com have.
I wrote a quick orientation guide yesterday for steemians seeing communities for the first time, either through steemit.com or steempeak.com.
The guide isn't extensive, I didn't want to scare anyone away by making it long.
I believe I have a good understanding of communities and if I don't know something somebody else will.
This is what SteemHelp community is for, so go ahead if you have any questions.
There's no question too simple or too complicated. If it's too complicated, we'll just have to find the right person to answer (maybe not right away).

Haha, fooled you! I'm really a dolphin! ;)
I had a run at making a new community today, on a topic I and some other folks have been posting fairly regularly about. After I had downloaded the keys, the process failed. I started over, and it failed again at the same point.
I am very appreciative of your offer to resolve questions. I hope I can ascertain why the process failed at the same point twice.
Thanks!
From your description it looks like you tried it from Steempeak.
You have enough STEEM in your wallet, so that's not it.
Was it an error or how did the process fail?
Did you reach the point to click "Continue" to create the community owner account, or the process failed before that?
If it was an error displayed, do you remember what it was? Or if you don't, can you repeat the process and maybe take a screenshot when it shows up.
It was exactly at the point when I clicked continue after downloading the keys. Then this came up.
I just tried it again, and met the exact same fate. This is the second page I arrive at during the process. I never am prompted to enter keys or anything other than name the community and provide a description, and then download the keys. There is a check box verifying the keys are saved safely, and I do check that before clicking continue.
This is an error thrown by SteemConnect and maybe @asgarth can check the logs to see what was going on.
By the way, are you sure you entered the private active key in SteemConnect when you were asked for it, instead of the posting key?
If you are comfortable with this, you can create the community in-between from Steempeak if you install Steem Keychain extension or via steemit.com.
I was never asked for a key. There was no place to enter a key. Before the above screenshot, the only page I saw was the very beginning of the process, where you name the community, add a description, download the keys and check the box to verify they are saved before clicking continue.
Keychain does not work on Tron's proprietary browser Opera, which is what I am using. I do prefer Steempeak to Steemit though. Sorry Tron!
I am unclear as to what you mean by 'create the community in-between from Steempeak..'
Thank you very much for the information that it is a steemconnect error. I do hope @asgarth notes the ping and satisfactorily resolves the issue.
Ok, so maybe there's a problem with the SteemConnect link (for creating communities). cc @asgarth.
I meant using Keychain.
I'm using Opera with Keychain! You just have to install the 'Install Chrome Extensions' extension for Opera first.
I'll be. I undertook no little discussion regarding Opera not being able to use Keychain on a discord last year. I, again, greatly appreciate the info. I will have a look at the Chrome extensions thingie.
Will it give all my data to Goolag?
The extension is created by Opera. I doubt they'll give your data to Google. That doesn't mean they don't use the user data themselves. :D
@justinsunsteemit is far less nefarious than Goolag.
Thanks!
I need to reboot. BBIAF
Back, but now searching for the 'install Chrome Extension' widget...
Chrome Extension installed. Now searching for Keychain...
All installed. Lemme try the community again.
Haha, that might be true!
It didn't try Keychain. It went to Steemconnect again and failed again.
Logout first!
Until asgarth (or @fabien) will fix this, SteemConnect will keep failing for creating communities on Steempeak. It's a good time to try Keychain. Once you install it and enter the private keys for your account, it will be used by default on Steempeak.
Keychain does not accept my active key, and until I disabled it I could not post or vote.
Hmm, that's strange. Never had this issue before. But I haven't added any keys recently either and they have updated the extension recently. I'll leave a message to Matt in discord.
welp, a good college try, and potential keychain on opera as a bonus - if I can get it working.
Thanks for your kind consideration and assistance.
You're welcome! I hope you'll get it to work, it's worth it.
I just tested this with my test account. Removed my private active key and added it back. And it went well.
Perhaps I have another extension active that is conflicting with it? Privacy Badger was preventing Dtube from working until I disabled it.
That can be a possibility. I have no extensions active on Opera, except the two. Try disabling all except those and see if it works.
Well, I did that, and just voted. Lessee if I can post.
lemmee see if I logout and back in if that will work.
Well, I cannot vote or post after logging out, because I cannot sign in with Keychain, and even if I sign in with Steemconnect, Keychain keeps popping up and refusing my active key so I cannot vote or post with it enabled.
It's a mystery.
Can you add a screen shot with keychain when it refuses your active key? Blur the key if it's displayed!
When I go to take a screenshot, Keychain disappears. Using the Opera snapshot function.
Alt-Print Screen to take the screenshot.
The keychain widget just says 'error' at the top. The lock in the text entry box is still there, and below that there are two buttons labeled 'unlock' and 'cancel'.
Aaah! The keychain extension asked you to set a password after you installed it. That's the password you have to enter here.
It's a one-time thing, when you open the browser.
It didn't ask me to set a password. I didn't have an opportunity to set a password.
After installing the extension from the site, I am prompted to go to extensions and select 'install' there. there is a button for the Keychain app and a description of permissions it needs. I click install.
Then return to the tab I have open to Steem, and try to vote or post, and the widget pops up, with the results I have related.
If you click on keychain, what does it say? Does it ask for a password?
When Keychain is enabled, but I have signed in with Steemconnect, because I cannot sign in with Keychain, when I try to vote or post the widget pops up.
On the widget are a text entry box with a padlock on it, and the two button labeled 'unlock' and 'cancel'.
Nothing about a password.
I enter my active key, and click 'unlock'.
The word 'error' appears at the top, and the rest of the widget appears unchanged.
Ok, you have to uninstall Keychain, because you don't know the password.
Then re-install it.
The first time you see Keychain's popup, whether directly after installing it, or after clicking on the extension button, you should be asked to set a password.
Write that down, as without it you can't access Keychain!
Only after you can really use it.
When I enabled it and clicked on the icon in the address bar, I was then prompted to enter a password, and thereafter my active key.
Unfortunately, when I attempt to act, it pops up and tells me the website is asking for the posting key, which it doesn't have. In order to do any action I need to disable Keychain.
I thought you added the posting key. Do what I said above about active key, except add the posting key.
Have you found where to add keys from, or should I give you a screenshot?
Here are some screenshots, what you should do, in order. Were you able to go to this place and enter your private keys?
You can of course enter your master password in step (screenshot) 3, but even though it won't be saved, I try to avoid this when there are alternatives.
I'm sorry I fell asleep and missed the above post which looks promising. I shall presently see if I can manage it.
Well I seem to have managed this.
I cannot more appreciate your persistence and effort to provide the understanding I lack.
Thank you.
Awesome! Great to see everything worked out well in the end. And no worries, we are all lacking in different areas, so I'm glad I could help.
I had to re enable it to click on it, as I was unable to post with it enabled. However when I did that, I was then prompted for a password, and thereafter to enter my active key.
Perhaps it will work now. Well I was able to post this with Keychain enabled. That's a good sign!
Even better! You don't have to uninstall it.
Then go to Manage accounts I think it's called (I'm not near my computer) and from there add the private active key to your account.
Doggone it. When I try to vote or deal with notifications, the widget pops up and tells me the current website is asking for the posting key, which it doesn't have.
I am unable to vote or deal with notifications. I was also unable to post this reply until I had disabled Keychain and Chrome Extensions.
When I log out and try to log in with Keychain, instead of the text entry box where you type in your username, I am presented with a button to install Keychain, which I select. I then am taken to the site where I install the app.
There appears to be a difficulty with the app properly installing, IMHO.
It's after 3 am here, and I must sleep.
Thanks for your kind assistance.
Ok, sleep well.
