On Rapidly Increasing Wealth Inequality
I am by no means an economist and am very much learning at this point, so I encourage anyone reading to add to the conversation and point out any of the many things I'm probably missing. There is lots more to talk about here and I want to continue the discussion in another post, hopefully adding in discussion generated from this one.

Growing up it seemed like the quality of life would only continue to improve for each generation. My grandparents grew up with the great depression then lived through a world war (one of them even lived through two). My parents were born into a period of rebuilding and growth, so lifestyles started to improve for the working classes and they saw the creation of the welfare system. Probably for the first time someone working a basic level job could easily attain buying a house. In addition to this they could afford to save towards retirement and go on holiday abroad.
We grew up in council houses, but when my parents were in their late 20s early 30s they were able to buy their first home. When my now husband and I bought our first house, in the late 1990s, we were in our early 20s. So it felt like each generation would find these things easier. It didn't take long to realise that this was not going to be the case. Everything had been built on the premise that we would have a perpetually growing economy and we realised that this could not continue indefinitely. We knew that as we got older the retirement age would get extended and there would be a good chance that the aged pension we were paying our National Insurance contributions into may not even exist by the time we reached retirement age, as the government got further and further into debt. We decided to take things into our own hands and start paying into private superannuation funds of our own, but lost our ability to even pay into them as the economy worsened.
The downward spiral
The economy in first world countries has been on a downward slope for some time now, but it's only recently started to become so apparent that the majority of the population are feeling it now, even the lower middle classes. Depending on who you speak to the cause of this seems to have lots of explanations usually along the lines of it being the fault of certain groups of people. It's the boomers, it's too many immigrants, it's landlords, it's capitalism, it's bad government spending...but none of these things make enough sense to be the cause, certainly not on their own and many are probably more symptoms than causes. It's only recently after coming across some interviews with Gary Stevenson that I've started to be able to make more sense of things and see the bigger picture.
Gary Stevenson is an economist from an impoverished background who made his money in trading, in particular through betting that the economy was going to collapse indefinitely and being right. He's well worth a listen to and has a YouTube channel, Garys Economics, which he uses to try and create awareness of the issues facing us and the causes as he sees them.
As Gary sees it the main cause of the economic collapse is wealth inequality. I've been hearing for years from multiple sources that if we lose the middle classes then we go back to poverty for the majority while a handful of people hold all the wealth. I was never sure how losing the middle classes would cause that, though. Now I'm realising that it's not so much a cause as a symptom or perhaps the sign that the tipping point has been reached.
Some describe what is happening as a wealth transfer, which is probably the best description. That transfer is happening in ways that aren't always obviously apparent, which explains why blame isn't going where some of the biggest causes are. Take, for example, the housing crisis across developed countries. House prices have increased far beyond what the working classes can afford. We see a boomer generation in houses that cost just 3 times their yearly wage when they purchased them and wonder if they must have done something to make sure future generations couldn't also do that. Migration levels have increased and we're seeing many more foreigners than we used to, so surely it must be because they are buying up all the houses and taking up all the government houses and we can't keep up with building enough new ones. News articles on Canada's initial drop in housing and rent prices since they reduced immigration in 2024 seem to corroborate this, but there are also others arguing that there is plenty of housing stock and lots of houses are sitting empty, both privately or housing trust owned, so that must be the real problem. While these factors are contributing to the problem, there is another less visible contributor that isn't being talked about as much and that is what the ultra rich are doing. You see, when you have everything you could ever need or want and you get some more money you buy assets. The more assets being bought up and held reduces what is available and increases the prices of assets across the board. That includes residential property, despite the fact that billionaires have no interest in buying physical residential property. It will even affect consumables like food and fuel, because on the stock exchange these can be classed as assets. This wasn't so much of a problem when we had a rapidly growing economy and lots of new resources being discovered, but now the rate of growth is lower than the rate at which the top end wealth is expanding, so that expansion has to come from somewhere, which seems to be the rest of the population.
While governments make shows of trying to do something about what we see as the visible causes of the housing crisis like agreeing to reduce immigration or implenting extra taxes on older generations in bigger properties or with investment properties to try and force them to relinquish them, it feels like they are just tinkering around the edges and not addressing the cause of wealth and assets being siphoned over to a few people at an ever increasing rate due to compound interest. Any benefits gained from the tinkering will only be temporary while the wealth transfer floodgates remain open. Thus we are hearing more and more people calling for a wealth tax to try and at least slow some of that transfer and bring some back down into circulation at the bottom end. It sounds like a simple solution, but would it even work if it was implemented?
Other factors
There's another factor that isn't often talked about, probably because it's not a nice topic and most don't want to think about it too much. It's population. The reality is that the times when the lower classes have been better off for a while have been after rebuilding following an event that has decimated a population. Most recently for the western world that was two world wars. When there aren't as many people around to do work then the wealthiest are in a position where they have no choice but to make better employment offers in order to keep their workers. It's also a fact that the more people there are the more thinly the available resources need to be spread around, meaning that everyone gets a bit less as the population grows. It's no wonder then that resentment will grow towards those hoarding more than they could ever use in multiple lifetimes.
There are differing viewpoints on what needs to be done to solve this problem. Some say tax wealth not income so that the working classes struggle less and some of the hoarded wealth is brought back into circulation. Some say the government needs to stop interfering to allow small businesses to be able to thrive and even start in the first place. I'd say why not both? One approach is considered left wing, the other right wing and people then end up arguing over who's right and who's wrong when neither solution on its own is likely to work, but applied together they could make a difference. The reality is that both sides are mad at the government for doing neither, but it's the very same people who are outbidding us for our governments who are the ones benefiting the most from them doing neither of these things.
The reality is that the situation we're in today is completely different to the one following the second world war and we will likely never be able to replicate that level of wealth distribution again and even if we did it would be spread thinner due to the population level being so much higher. There is probably no harm in trying, however, especially as there isn't much to lose at this point.
There are those who say there is no point in even trying to petition government any more, they have all sold out to the highest bidders, then there are those who say if we could just stop fighting among ourselves there are enough of us to demand change and override the billionaires who have the governments in their pockets.

For me it's about how the rich simply accumulate without hard work - once you've got money it just begets money. So the real inequality is how the poor and middle classes just keep working their asses off and get nowhere especially with inflation with what it is. We're even feeling it with our earning capacity - a teacher's wage used to mean you'd be reasonably well off but now it feels we're struggling with the rest of them. So it's this inequality that's eroding the social fabric - rather than inequality in general. You just can't get anywhere. YOu can't afford to build assets and have wealth accumulate the way you used to be able to. People are getting locked out of things they could work to buy into - housing, education etc. And now it's looking at only those who can inherit the last gen's wealth will have any social mobility, which furthers the upset.
And now we seem to be simplistically blaming migrants when it's been an accumulation of factors over successive governments. Worse, it becomes about blaming Indians and anyone not English (we have almost the same amount of English migrants here as Indian) which furthers social division. Sure 'mass' migration is a problem but there's a lot more factors at work. But people need a simple and easy thing to blame. It's a shame that people whip up rhetoric about migrants rather than acknowledget that yes, mass migration is an absolute issue but so is taxes, negative gearing etc etc.
Everything feels a bit fucked up right now. For once I can see how people are beginning to align with Pauline Hanson, though I can't stand her politics.

I think you've put down in words here what the majority of the population are feeling right now. I'm not sure if teachers would be classed as upper working class or lower middle, but it's only a matter of time before people higher up the wage ladder start feeling it too. Recently I listened to a chap saying that if you are employed and paid by the hour for your work then he would class you as working class. I think he was trying to say that we shouldn't even be dividing ourselves into classes at this point, because all of us are facing the same challenges moving forward. We've still got AI to tend with as well and that's assuming best case scenario.
Migrants are a conveniently visible target to distract people from looking too long at where the problems are really coming from. If one were a conspiracy theorist one might even suggest that the increased migration from countries very different to our own are purposeful in order to increase tensions and enmity. Then all the billionaires need to do is fund the right wing parties who are listening to the fearful concerns of the people. Then they could get the media they own whipping up a storm on every bad thing a migrant does. 🤔 But that would crazy talk!!
Only my eldest has citizenship. Shaun and I don't particularly want it, but with all the threats One Nation MPs are throwing out we might have to just bite the bullet if they get in.

Yeah that's what Jamie is worried about. Even though she said that permanent residents would be exempt he doesn't trust that. I mean he would never have bothered if he didn't feel there was a bit of a threat there. I mean would you move back to England seeing how things have got over there? I told Jamie I wouldn't even take his ashes back there haha, I'd just post them...
I'm not sure on the conspiracy there about increasing tensions via migration, I think we legit need the labour.
Her speech the other day was just so fucked up. The problem is this RHETORIC about tensions rather than the tensions themselves. I was really hoping we'd be left out of that whole craziness in America and Europe but we seem to be following the playbook.
I did read about how the social bubbles we're in online are just mirrored offline, and because we are now in enclaves of 'classes' and like minded, like financially mobile/immobile people, we don't mix as much as we used to, and thus don't really understand how other people might struggle, and how jack some people are of the educated classes talking their own rhetoric about issues that they want simple, honest, transparent solutions to. I can see why the whole transgender thing has got their goat - I get it, and I can see why the ordinary Australians feel their own needs aren't being met. It's dangerous to just sit in our bubbles and not even try to imagine how other people might feel or live or what they need.
But it's the same for, say, Hanson supporters and anti immigration folk. The whole 'let's defund SBS because if they really took part in our culture they wouldn't need foreign films or the news in their own language, they should be talking Australian' without thinking that maybe, if they had to live in another country, they might be trying to talk French but they'd sure need a break to watch AFL or English news just to feel some home comfort.
Anyway, England beat Croatia this morning, Jamie's happy as he won't be teased by all the Croatians at work :P

I think this and social bubbles have a bit in common. I have friends online on both sides, so thankfully it means I get a wider range of concerns rather than it spiralling into an echo chamber (at least I bore so). Unfortunately I feel like I'm also seeing some reasonable people being led down a radicalisation path, for want of a better word.
Yes, we need the migration (always have) but more so for regional areas. Unfortunately most are ending up in the major cities (Sydney, Perth, Melbourne) and from what's being said our systems are struggling to keep up (schools, healthcare etc). We're not seeing it in Adelaide as much, because we're probably classed as regional. Then there are gripes that a special deal has been made with India for them to get permanent residency visas granted without the hoop jumping that other immigrants have to do. This could be why there is particular resentment towards Indians here as well. Not to mention that some are Muslims and of cause there's the stirring up of Islamaphobia. My daughter was saying that even some of the long term Indians here at her workplace are complaining about the new influx. 😆
I think the problem with governments setting different rules for different ethnicities is that it just creates more division than help any group out.
I haven't listened much to Pauline's speeches. I'd probably get riled up partway through and just switch off, like I do with most politicians. All I hear coming from them these days is lies and division. And YES the RHETORIC is so much worse than the actual tensions and even the acts of violence. I love seeing a comment section pointing out how those recent attacks in the UK by migrants are plastered all over the news and causing protests, but none of the multitude of recent crimes by the native population are garnering this level of attention.
Thousands of years of history shows that when standards of living get stressful it's often the migrants who become a target to blame.
Oh yeah when a Sudanese guy with a machete commits an act of violence there's riots, but if women are killed in DV, crickets.
Absolutely. This is why sometimes I'd much prefer we never went global. Sometimes I think AI will sort us out into enclaves and be done with it.
Let's hope that's the worst of what AI would want to do with us

There is a big problem here… most of the explanations are not true. So, as you say, most people cannot see, and do not know what the real problems are.
Elonzo Musky does not have a trillion dollars. He is a brokie that puts everything on credit-cards. But, because he is of the bankster-preferred class, he can do so forever, and never really have to pay it back.
This entire thing, everything stated above is because of the bankster class. Money printing.
Can you save up money to buy a house, and then outbid someone who got a mortgage? Only in extreme cases. Free/printed money is always larger than saved money. So, house prices go up and up and up till they are equal to 30 years of max payments you can afford.
And THEN! if the economy turns down, or the interest rate is raised, everyone suddenly cannot afford housing. And, in 2008, that is exactly what the Fed and banksters did.
This is all about the banksters destruction of the middle class. The banksters want serfs. They will buy up all the houses, and then you will rent.
In 2008, the banks sold all their houses to these corporations that did nothing with them. Kept them off the market. The same is still happening. Housing inventory is controlled by the banksters.
And the scheme is just like the "company store". The company pays you. The company store costs just a little more than you earn. You cannot escape the system without real effort.

I actually like how Gary Stevenson explained how both 2008 and the 2020 lockdowns basically just funnelled governement wealth (AKA tax money) into the hands of the billionaires. All done in a way that makes it seem like they were just helping out the people. When he explains it, it's just so obvious and straight forward I don't think even sceptics can miss seeing how obvious that wealth transfer is. At this point I don't think it even matters why it's happening, just that it is happening and it's becoming more and more apparent.

I'm reading your article "just for fun" as I am waiting for my German language student. The class is starting in half an hour, and I have already done all the preparation, reading my student's homework essay she wrote about housing in her home country, China. One interesting thing she mentions, that I didn't know (and I had to check to verify), is that China has one of the highest rates of home ownership worldwide. In other news I happened to stumble across while waiting for the class to start, is that Elon Musk has become the first trillionaire in history after the SpaceX IPO. Two seemingly unrelated things, that are both adding a lot of context to your article, which I won't be able to get out of my head now.
That is interesting indeed. I see China is the second highest on the list and Germany surprisingly low. Back in the late 80s early 90s when I visited family and friends in Germany I recall how much higher the standard of living for many was, but they all rented. They were very nice rentals for the most part, except for my great aunt who lived in relative poverty. Only the really wealthy in comparison to them had their own homes. I would compare our standard of living to my great aunt's, yet we were still living in our own homes.
Yeah, I think in Europe Balkan countries take the lead in home ownership. A bit surprising. What about the otherwise "wealthy" Western Europeans, or let alone Scandinavians? Anyway, having money is not so much a sign that you would own your home, but I´d still assume you'd want to free yourself from financial dependence, at least in the place you live in yourself. Clearly, investment properties is a different thing.

Like you, I'm not an economist either, but I do try to stay informed. A difficult task with so many opinions floating around out there.
You skillfully illustrated, based on the family realities of recent generations, how we've come to understand our relationship with money. Incidentally, money is an invention derived from the abundance and surpluses of goods and services, which facilitated exchanges as the population grew.
Hence, the crucial question: What is money?
I'm not going to fall into the trap of offering a technical definition, nor am I going to recount the history behind it. Much less repeat the arguments of so-called conspiracy theorists. And some of those outlandish theories turned out to be true over time, but that's a topic for another discussion.
In practical terms, money is what captures the time you invest in obtaining the goods and services necessary to ensure your subsistence and the safety of yourself and your loved ones. It's that simple.
The problem, then, is that we have relinquished that responsibility to others. We have traded living "freely," assuming the risks, for the comfort and supposed security offered by those who control money.
Do you see the magnitude of what we have faced for millennia?
Money is a shackle for most people. Since becoming aware of this, I admire Diogenes of Sinope more than Plato. Of course, I wonder if the famous philosopher were alive today, he would have a much harder time. I am aware of the great invisible cage that surrounds us. Is resignation our only option? No… The fact that we are here, in a cryptographic space, is a glimmer of resistance.
You've probably heard from religious circles that we should leave big cities, and to be honest, I think they're right in a way. But moving to a better place? No.
We should build them where possible; it's a shame the system is designed to prevent those (which includes most of us), you've rightly called the working class, from doing so.
This is a topic that gives us much to think about, fallacies to dismantle in narratives that have taken root in the collective unconscious. For example, the eugenic narrative is used to address the supposed problem of overpopulation and the planet's inability to meet the growing demand for food. Then I remember barns left to rot, crops, and countless milk cartons dumped due to price disagreements or logistical failures.
Many thoughts remain in my mind, such as the push towards the imposition of universal basic income, the growing impact of AI on our lives, the struggle between globalists and localists, the ineffectiveness of pseudo-democracy, corporate techno-feudalism, and the "you'll have nothing, and you'll be happy" mentality. Anyway, I'll wait for your next post on this topic.

You are right on many if not all points. It's just that the system is rigged. Wealth breeds wealth and poor are getting poorer.
I was pleasantly surprised that you outlined demise of the middle class as a symptom. Bravo!
In our civilization one of major sins is that we exchange cause for symptom. Our health system is built on this misconception, intentionally so.
Root causes, and original sins, are:
-nature is out enemy
I could go on and on, there are so many things that are fundamentally wrong.
What is the solution? No idea.
First, nature comes first, all living beings come first.
Then, money is a tool, not an overlord above us all.
Third, empathy towards everybody and everything.
And, community and parallel interrelated systems. Finance, health, education, communication, ... Everything. If/when we build all these systems for community and not for profit then we start to live.
Sorry if my thoughts are incoherent. It's typing after three beers and going on vacation early in the morning. Being free and living as life is supposed to be for a couple of days.

Ironically I would say that this need to accumulate excessive amounts of money probably comes from when we were small communities and tribes where looking after each other by gathering resources was part of our survival. Hoard too much for yourself, though, and you'd have to tend with the rest of the tribe. Today this is happening on a country and almost world scale and the rest of the populous are too big and scattered to come together cohesively to do much about it.
We have become so disconnected from the natural world many fail to even see it any more. It's certainly to our detriment.

I have a sense that the "enshittification" of the world started with Gen-X — we were the first group of people to grow up with the possibility that we would NOT be as well off as our parents. The most recent scary statistic is that Gen Alpha will likely be the first generation to be dumber than their parents. Of course, "dumb" is a vague and politically incorrect piece of terminology, but the statistics show intelligence/critical thinking is measurably on the decline.
I imagine the system is going to break at some point, as those in top echelons seem blind to the fact that the very machine that is making them so rich is running out of fuel. It's great that we have AI and that AI can do the work of humans, but without those humans spending money, it stops mattering what those AI driven machines can create...
People talk about developing new skills for the new age... but perhaps the best skills we can "develop" is knowing how to grow food and knowing how to build stuff ourselves.

I was recently listening to Tristan Harris talking about his concerns with AI. In his opinion the BEST case scenario is AI taking over all the work and no people actually being able to purchase what is being made. A lot of simulations done with them leads him to believe that best case is actually unlikely. Perhaps AI will beat us to breaking the system, it merely remains to be seen just how.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
