The Harbour Bridge route

(Edited)

Every day I cycle 20-25 km just to get a bit of exercise and clear my head. The last couple of weeks I have started early as it has been hot and sunny. I know that people laugh when I say that we almost reached 20° C, but to me that is mighty hot.

The bicycle paths are full in the early hours because all those wage dependent people who are commuting to their job, so you have to be more vigilant than when you bike after 9:00, but as I leave home at about 8:00 I at least don't have to deal with the even larger and more busy crowd who has to be at their job at 8:00.

Things started to easy up when I came to Christianshavn. The bicycle bridge going to Holmen, the old naval base, and Prinsessegade was up so I choose to take a right turn and cycle down Strandgade (Beach Street) along the old warehouses.

Some old wooden tub had to pass so the pedestrian and bicycle bridge was up. I couldn't wait for that.

The alley leading to Strandgade.

And here is Strandgade in all its splendour (The image is taken on another bikeride, before Copenhagen opened up, but I didn't get a good one today). The building with the yellow lower facade is Christianshavns Færgecafé (the Ferry café of Christiansharbour), a place where you can eat traditional Danish food, ryebread open sandwich, hot meals and beer. Not far from a British pub, except for the Ryebread.

The Cross where the busy Torvegade cross Strandgade. At the end of the street you can see the beautiful rococo Church, Christianskirken, from the middle of the eighteenth century.

The church is broader than it is wide so the church room i a bit atypical.

A calm part of Christianshavn's canal. Seen from the Circlebridge, a rather new addition to the city's pedestrian and bicycle bridges.

The large modern addition to the Royal Library, which the Copenhageners approvingly named The Black Diamond, a name that is now also used officially. One of the few waterfront buildings that has been meet with positive general acceptance. In the Background you can see the tower of Christiansborg where the parliament resides.

Another new bicycle bridge called Little Long Bridge after the large bridge behind it: Langebro.

Another view of this the newest bicycle bridge in Copenhagen.

After this I cycled down Islands Brygge over the Bicycle bridges, Bryggebroen, Cykelslangen and the rebuilt Dybbølsbro. This is my harbour bridge route :)

One and a half minute into this video you can see the Christians Church and the bridges.

This trip was about 20 km.

Social distancing in the first image? It seems a little cramped!

Yes, people are slacking now. It is close to being over in Denmark, at least for now, so the police had to clear a lot of the inner harbour and beaches for people who wanted to rub shoulders with all the other skimmed milk white bodies. Evidence has shown that there's only a rather low chance of being contaminated outdoors, but with calm winds and hormone exuberant youngsters in bikinis and bathing trunks there's always a chance of... bad things.

That's a nice distance to cycle each day. It looks like it is fairly flat. Great to have such a cycle-friendly city. I have not cycled for over a week, so I need to get out soon for a ride.

Yes, it is about 1-1.5 hour which is fine on a daily basis. When I feel like it I go for longer trips, but as I cycle about 19 km/h it takes much more time. Central Copenhagen is flat like a pancake, build on salt marshes and low lying meadows back in the Viking age. Up North there's more hilly and very beautiful. Have a nice bike trip when you get to it.

Such a lovely place to cycle and WOW, that's a good healthy daily distance, good on you!

I totally agree with temperature. I am lucky in that being on the sea we are usually about 10 degrees cooler, so this past week, whilst my friends who live only a bit inland (say 20 minutes from the sea) were complainging of far too warm (70 F) and I happily had my jumper on working in the garden with the cool breezes.

At least our Summer temps usually only really reach the low 80s F for a few days in August. MY Ideal temp is 60's F but alas we cannot control the weather, eh?

It is about an hour or so, not racing with Spandex and helmet - I have tweed jacket and sometimes a tie - it is just a nice fresh way to get a bit around. I like walking also, but mainly when it is colder. The bike gives me abetter range to go explore places in and around Copenhagen. I am not much of a work out type, so I need something more interesting to look at and think about than my speed, pulse and fat percentage.

I do love my city, but recently I have had this urge to move to Norway (maybe global warming is talking to my subconscious).

See, even just watching that video makes me nervous. It's a little sped up, right?
I sure wish I felt comfy riding a bike on urban streets. It's a great way to get around. Lovely shots.

I think it is double speed, so I get a bit nervous watching it too. Also I think it is one of those Spandex/helmet men who have recorded it, so he already goes fast.

When you ride in Copenhagen or some of the large Dutch cities it feels less intimidating. The motorists are used to look out for cyclists. I would be nervous also in a German or British city.

Here's a video in English I browsed when trying to find this video. It is like one long glorifying praise of Copenhagen, but if you can stand a bit of bike propaganda there's a lot of footage of the real tempo and all the different people riding.

Much better! I could do that. so true about riding in the US, and I know from being in cars with other drivers that the animosity toward bikes is real. Drivers here hate bikes!

The kids learn bike riding safety in school! I love this video, thank you for providing it.

Well, I am glad you like it. What I have seen of it is factual. The biking lessons and the test is old enough for me to have attended one. There was a nice, local policeman present and everybody past the test. To me it is a bit strange and also a bit embarrassing to see how much admiration our use of this simple machine evokes :) I have been using a bike for my whole life and never gave it a second thought before all the hipsters of the worlds reinvented it. But cycling is a good thing, I hope it will be included in the change that you hopefully are about to experience in the US. Getting rid of racism, division and inequality is first though :)

It's just 7:11am and it's 23°C. It gets pretty hot as the day progresses. So I'm going to laugh now because 20°C is still a cool weather.

Let me laugh now 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣😃😃

Yes, I am not comfortable with too much warmth. Problem is that my wife always freezes. So when she is happy I am devastated, and when I am comfortable she is grumpy.

Sometimes we prefer the raining season and harmattan to dry season when it's always hot.
