A Day In Maupin OR - Part 1 - Rafting the Deschutes River

avatar
(Edited)
These are from a little trip to Maupin OR in August of 2013 to do some rafting and camping. A friend of mine at the time had been doing a big remodel on an old ranch in the area. Near the end of the job he treated his employees and friends to a little rafting and a campout on the ranch property. In the following images I am the guy in the neon green/yellow shirt. :)

The pictures in this installment were provided by River Drifters Rafting and taken by a photographer unknown to me. They were taken with a Canon EOS 20D and 30D. The GIFs were created by me, @oldmans, using Imgflip.

"Who wants to ride point?" the guide asked. "It will be fun" she said.

As she deftly steered us into the hole and the churning white water ahead...

The volunteer point man was lost to a wall of water.

Only his feet remained to be seen.

If you zoom in close to the guide's face you will see a sly smile that seems to say "Got another one".

Here is a gif of the same sequence of photos.

These dudes arw really having fun. What if they fall of from boat. Is there any lifeguard? Or is the water not too deep?

It was a blast! I would go again in a heartbeat!

There are no lifeguards, but most of the guided rafts have a throw rope for those that exit the raft unexpectedly. There is slack water between the rapids that can be shallow but there are also some deep pools. They do adjust your life vests to a pretty snug fit and they do pop you to the surface instantly. I think overall the Deschutes is considered a pretty safe rafting river.

This seems to have been great fun - I can see the smile on your face. We have some rivers here where they offer rafting tours too, but I think this is one of the few things I would not do ... I would sh*t my pants 😉 lol
Although not yours, the photos are great and seeing you having fun is great too, my friend.

I hope you are well and everything is fine 😊

Hi @johannpiber. So sorry I am late with a response. I totally missed your reply.😒

Everything is pretty good here. Things are starting to open up but I am not sure that is the right decision. I know for my part I won't be getting out in the crowds anytime soon. 😀

It is great fun! Really not as bad as it looks as long as you are comfortable around water.

Thank you for stopping by and I hope all is well with you and your family. Again, sorry for the late reply my friend. 😀

Good evening @oldmans 🙂
Never mind - I don't wait for a reply when I comment 😉

Some say loosening the measures is good, some say not. I agree with you and am not sure if it's good, because people forget quickly and as I could see today when I drove through our city, most have forgotten already what was going on for months ... what is still going on. Hopefully I am wrong and the world will normalize soon.

Thanks a lot for asking, we are all well and I think it will stay this way 🙂

Take care and stay safe my friend 👍

Our little town was the same way today. We are a tourist type town so lots of people passing through. My girlfriend went to the post office today and said everyone was acting like there was no problem at all. Gathering in groups, very few masks and overwhelming the few businesses that are open.

I too hope I am wrong and everything will work out fine. I just hope we can have a small amount of change toward a better way of living when it is all done. In the mean time I will stick to my hermit like ways. 😂

So, and now I am a bit late - so we are even 😉
Good morning @oldmans 🙂
Yes, let's be careful and hope that the people begin to think what has happened and see how much the nature has recovered in the past few weeks when we left her alone. Maybe our nature needed this virus to wake us up and show us how it could be if we would just take a little bit more care of her.
Have a great and hopefully sunny Sunday 🙂☀️
