My Recent Comic Book Treasures!

As I have mentioned before, I am usually quite loath to purchase comics in single issue formats... I would really love to, but it does become quite an expensive exercise! I do like picking up collected editions, but these can also get a touch expensive (although, still much cheaper than purchasing them individually. I also have quite a few digital versions (more than a few... all legal from Humble Bundle) of comics, but reading them on a screen just isn't quite the same thing!

Anyway, the other day... I was on the way to the violin luthier when I stumbled across a comic book store (Henk in Amsterdam). Now, I must have walked past this shop a million times... but I never really looked into it as I would generally pass by on the busier tourist side... and in those cases, I'm just heads down and walking as fast as I can towards whatever place I need to be.

This time, I passed on the quieter canal side of the shop... and the comics in the windows caught my eye... I did have an appointment with the luthier, but he was quite flexible with the time as he was there all afternoon... so, I decided to drop in for a quick look!

... and boy, was I glad that I did... there was a clearance sale on collected issues at the back of the shop. I'm not entirely sure if it was because they were trying to clear stock after several weeks of being closed due to the Coronavirus lockdowns or if it was a pretty regular thing (I guess I will know the next time I go to Amsterdam!).... but it gave me a chance to pick up quite a few collected issues that I had been meaning to try out!

The first up was the Legenderry Vol 1 collected edition.... it is a pretty weird take on familiar superheroes (such as the Phantom, Flash Gordon and Red Sonja....) where they are recast into a Steampunk setting and all tossed into together into a larger overarching plot. They still hold much of their backstories and powers, but it is all familiar but so very different! Bill Willingham is the writer from the Fables, and I did LOVE that series... so I thought I would take a chance on it!

It is beautifully drawn... and I discovered that I also have the rest of the series in digital format from Humble Bundle as well!

Next up is a series that I have often seen at the local bookstore in the discount section... which weren't really discounted at all! However, these were a bit of a steal... Thankfully the first two volumes in the series, plus a crossover edition as well. Executive Assistant is a dystopian future take on the corporate world... where the Assistants are really more like bodyguards and assasins to the powerful corporate leaders. It's pretty damn bloody...

Next up, I was surprised to find a couple of collected pieces of my all time favourite comic series, the Fables. These are some of the extended and spun off stories that come off the main story series... but I am looking forward to catching up to some of the fairytale characters!

The Darkness... My only experience with this franchise is with the computer games... and it was dark, bloody and gory! Definitely not for the faint of heart. Anyway, I have always been a bit curious to see what the comics would be like... and as luck would have it there were quite a few of the these for sale!

Unfortunately, the downside of diving in the clearance bin is the fact that you are not guaranteed to get a sequential run of books. So, the story is going to be a bit disjointed. Still... better than nothing!

... and finally, an excuse for dropping in? I picked up these two comics editions for my kids... the My Little Pony book (unfortunately at full price... but I couldn't find anything else suitable for her...) for the toddler who is completely obsessed with these little equines. Later, I also checked my Humble Bundle collection, and found that I have a full set of these! She is going to lose her mind!

Herobear and the Kid is a completely new thing to me... but I did have a quick look through, and I think that the older girl is going to love it! A kid and his superhero polar bear... what is there not to love?

Splinterlands (aka the best blockchain game out there!)

Nice finds! I know nothing about this art form. You seem to know an awful lot about every art form.

Ha... I'm afraid that I know a lot about music in depth as an art form (and then only a small subset of that)... the rest of the art form, I'm only a interested consumer of the pretties! They look great to me, but I couldn't tell you about the nuances that the actual artists would be able to talk about!

These are pretty cool finds! I found some old comics in a thrift store. The seller was too young to know about them and sold it to me for peanuts.

Hehe... it's nice to get one over the kiddies! Although, I hope it wasn't literally peanuts!
