For week 23 you had to show : “schools out” in the challenge by @photo52 and our friend @wwwiebe. “Schools out” is nowadays in Holland “Schools is in”, because they just started back to school again after the corona crisis. So I had to take some picture pre-corona and I found the outting we did with C’s class to Tomatoworld, where i was fortunate to with them.

What is Tomato world?

Well its an experience centre where they tell you and the school kids about a unique concept with a multidimensional experience: seeing, hearing, tasting, feeling, smelling, learning. They have a massive greenhouse with more than 80 different tomato varieties in which sustainable cultivation can be seen and learned with our own eyes. Ideal for the class to learn and do assignments with. They offer teaching programmes for every level of education, and for primary schools its also with thing trying out and tasting of the tomatoes. And we could wear a lab coat and i felt like an investor or a lab rat hahhahah. In days of inviromental change they also work together with companies and organisations on themes such as sustainability, healthy food, taste, innovation and cultivation methods,

The interactive tour with contemporary themes for your students. And of course the students visit Tomatoworld's demonstration office, was a great day spent. Here they can see with their own eyes how 80 different tomato varieties are grown with the latest techniques. They hear the bumblebees flying and see what is being done to get a beautiful, tasty tomato. They will learn how diseases and pests are treated biologically and... of course they taste the different types of tomatoes. And the mums could buy fresh from the ground!

The main subject was sustainability for today. This global challenge is central to Tomatoworld and comes in every tour in different ways, but always interactive, offerings.

  • Population growth and urbanisation
  • Finiteness of fossil fuels
  • Global warming
  • Scarcity of fresh water
  • Wasting food
  • The importance of healthy eating
all themes that are important for the future of the students.

During the tour of Tomatoworld, students experience at their own level the feeling that every world citizen can also contribute to the solutions of the world food problem through his/her own food choice and lifestyle. The teacher has a plan to make some more in the classroom and teach more with science. For more information you can visit https://www.tomatoworld.nl/en/tours/primary-school-and-highschool, they maybe have similar factories in your country.

What a beautiful tour of that greenhouse of tomatoes @brittandjosie, now that I have seen several here in Colombia I know that they are very educational for children. This way they learn where food comes from and how it is planted. Excellent friend.

That's a boatload of tomatoes! All I knew before reading this is that there were red tomatoes and green tomatoes. I had no idea!
