Sometimes I have been predisposed to things going wrong, but life ends up surprising me with joys. My graduation day was one of those days when I expected everything to go wrong, but it turned out to be awesome! Today I want to share it with you 🥳.

If you're wondering why I expected the worst to happen on my graduation day, it's because graduating from a public university, in one of the most critical countries on the planet, in the middle of a pandemic, is not exactly easy 😅, so many of the expectations I had about my graduation were dashed by my circumstances.

The Context

As you may know, living conditions in Venezuela are not optimal and COVID has made it more difficult for us. Now many universities, for lack of budget and at the expense of COVID, have opted not to hold formal graduation ceremonies, this being the case of my university (UNEARTE).

That is, the university chose not to hold the traditional ceremony where a speech is given and each student goes to the podium with cap and gown to receive the degree. No, they opted to make a presentation by the secretary, so cap and gown were not allowed during the presentation.

Frustrated with the news that we would not have a graduation ceremony, the students formed a group on whatsapp to seek solutions. We collected signatures and sent a letter to the rector requesting the ceremony, while at the same time we were looking for the cost of renting the cap and gown.

In the end the act was denied, but they agreed to let us use cap and gown for the photos after the presentation. By that time I was already discouraged because there would be no formal ceremony, my parents were not coming, I had no money for the cap and gown, and even though I wanted to, I could not afford a graduation luncheon. From there I looked at everything with resignation, as if there was nothing more I could do, condemning that day to be boring and frustrating, but it turned out to be full of surprises.

A gift from all over the world

That morning, when I arrived at the university, I was greeted with a surprise from my childhood friends, which turned out to be nothing more and nothing less than a bouquet of flowers, the cap and gown 🙈

For me it was super shocking, I really didn't see it coming. I'll explain, my childhood friends are out of the country and do not directly know anyone in my social circle, so it did not occur to me that something like this could happen, but my friends contacted via Instagram to my friends in Caracas and in complicity with them they did it!

As soon as I saw the gift it took me a few seconds to remember that a week ago I had expressed to the girls how frustrated I felt about graduation, and then I realized that it was because of that conversation that they all got together to give me this gift when I least expected it 😳🙈

Also, it was very touching to receive it from them, since it comes from friends who are mostly out of the country, and it moves me that from far away they showed me their affection and happiness for my achievement with this gesture ♥️. I am grateful and fortunate that the friendship I forged with them more than a decade ago is still present today.

Mi almuerzo favorito

My favorite lunch

After this surprise I received my degree and took many pictures, and at the end I was surprised again with an invitation to celebrate in the best way: eating!

We went to a super nice Sushi restaurant and we were lucky enough to get a 2x1 promo that we obviously took advantage of. We had salad and rolls, then we went for ice cream and walked around.

I'm one of those people who loves to celebrate with food, so eating one of my favorite dishes on my graduation day was something that made me very happy. Also, this was the first time I went out to eat at a local place since COVID came out, so it felt pretty special to be able to go out again.

Vino tinto para cerrar el día🍷

Red wine to close the day🍷

The last surprise was to arrive home and toast with a bottle of wine with the family that has welcomed me in Caracas, whom I love very much and who are already family to me. I was not expecting the gesture and it made my day 🙈☺️ That night I went to sleep feeling very happy, loved and grateful.

Reflexión y palabras finales

Reflection and last words

How beautiful are the moments when life surprises me with good things. I had zero expectations for my graduation day, I didn't even think about having a cap and gown, much less expected it to be a memorable day with a bouquet of flowers, lunch and toast, but everything turned out well thanks to the fact that that day was not made by me, but by my friends.

All these gifts made me think that my loved ones were telling me "You did it! You deserve to celebrate your accomplishment, you deserve a special day" and organizing among themselves made the day for me. This made me reflect on the lack of recognition I give myself when I achieve something, because if it were up to me then nothing would have happened, I was already resigned, but how interesting to realize and receive this call to action in such a beautiful way, from love.

This day allowed me not only to achieve an academic triumph, but to know that I am worthy of experiencing joy and love, and that even when I act in disagreement with this I am fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful people who remind me of it, so I can continue to train this muscle called Self-Love.

Thank you for reading to the end 🙌🏻

✨ A hug and good vibes ✨

Ay que emoción!
