Beautiful Sunday: beautiful day in the countryside, ชีวิตในชนบท

All of a sudden, unexpected cold front came down from China making the daytime temperature dropped to 15 degree Celsius and around 10 degree Celsius in the night. The strong wind howled for several hours making the atmosphere very chilly and wintry. I cherished the warm sunshine in the morning and let the sunshine streamed in through the window to warm up the room. This cool weather made it very pleasant to take a walk along the country lane.

I took a morning walk to enjoy the cold weather with warm sunshine and blue sky. I checked out the villager’s vegetable patch in the area hoping to get some organic greens. But it was almost the end of the growing season, most of tomato and green cabbages have just finished. So, I could get some fresh coriander from the villager. The price was incredibly cheap comparing with those in supermarkets. I only wanted a small bunch of coriander and the friendly villager refused to let me pay; it’s her new year’s present to me. I did go back to see her later to give her two small totes bags. She worked so hard just to earn some daily income for her family. The prices of vegetables and agricultural produce are very cheap here as people do not have high level of disposable income.

ตอนนี้อากาศเริ่มหนาวมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ฤดูหนาวย้อนกลับมาอีกครั้ง แต่อากาศหนาวเหน็บกว่าเดิมหลายเท่า เพราะลมพัดแรงมาก ทำให้ในบ้านหนาวเหมือนอยู่ในตู้เย็นเลย เราคิดว่าอีกหน่อยคงต้องมีเครื่องทำความอบอุ่นในบ้านแน่นอน พอแดดออกเราก็ให้แสงแดดส่องเข้ามาในบ้านเพื่อทำให้บ้านอุ่นขึ้น พอสายหน่อยอากาศดีมาก เหมาะสำหรับการออกไปเดินเล่นตามชนบท เราก็ไปเดินทักทายชาวบ้านที่ปลูกผักสวนครัวในบริเวณใกล้บ้าน

เราอยากรู้ว่ามีผักใบเขียวอะไรให้เราซื้อบ้าง พอไปเจอคนปลูกผัก เราก็ผิดหวังมากที่ผักหลายอย่างเริ่มวายแล้ว เขาตัดไปขายเกือบหมดแล้ว เช่นมะเขือเทศ ผักใบเขียว มีเหลือแต่ผ้กชี และต้นหอม เราก็ขอซื้อผักชีหนึ่งกำ เราตกใจมากที่ราคาถูกมากอย่างไม่น่าเชื่อ ตามห้างนั้นเราคงต้องจ่ายเงินยี่สิบบาท ที่สวนผักเขาขายแค่ห้าบาท คนปลูกผักไม่ยอมรับเงินจากเรา และให้เราฟรีหนึ่งกำ เพื่อเป็นของขวัญปีใหม่ เราเห็นเขาทำงานหนักทุกวัน แต่ราคาพืชผลทางเกษตรนั้นราคาถูกมาก คนแถวนี้มีกำลังซื้อน้อยกว่าคนในเมืองหลายเท่า เขาจึงไม่สามารถขายผักในราคาสูงได้เหมือนในตัวเมือง เราเดินดูท้องฟ้าและต้นไม้ตามข้างทาง ชีวิตเรียบง่ายและสงบ แต่แวดล้อมไปด้วยธรรมขาติ ท้องฟ้ากว้างไกลไม่มีตึกระฟ้ามาบังท้องฟ้า อากาศก็สดชื่นเบาสบาย เราก็หวังว่าธรรมชาติและสภาพแวดล้อมเหล่านี้คงมีอยู่ต่อไปนานหลายสิบปี

Later in the evening, it’s time to plant some saplings which my old college friend gave me for the new year. They were ten small mahogany and ten Neem saplings. Hopefully these would grow fast and flourish in this cold weather. Mahogany trees are supposed to be very protective against strong wind and they are sought after by the furniture industry.

Neem trees are very useful as a source of traditional medicine, the young leaves and flowers are very popular among local people. They could be quickly boiled then eaten with Thai chili sauce. I am very interested in making use of Neem leaves and oil for medicinal purposes.

ตอนเย็นเราก็ไปปลูกต้นไม้ยี่สิบต้น เพื่อนเก่าที่เคยเรียนหนังสือมาด้วยกันให้ต้นไม้เรามาตอนปีใหม่ เราปลูกต้นมะฮอกกานีสิบต้น และต้นสะเดาอีกสิบต้น เพื่อเป็นการลงทุนสำหรับอนาคต ต้นมะฮอกกานีเป็นต้นไม้ที่คนใช้ทำเฟอร์นิเจอร์และไม้ฝาบ้านเพราะ มีลวดลายสวยงาม ส่วนต้นสะเดาก็สามารถใช้ประโยชน์ได้ทั้งดอกและใบ แถมไม้ก็ขายได้ด้วย มะฮอกกานียังช่วยปังลมและต่อต้านลมแรงๆได้ดีด้วย เราอยากจะสะกัดทำน้ำมันสะเดาในอนาคต
