Gifts of Love
Hyacinths are one of my favorite flowers and I LOVE the smell of them! I like to have some to add color to my day when every thing is frozen and covered in white outside!
Forcing Hyacinths Bulbs for Early Blooms
I forced these bulbs to bloom early for me by giving them a cold period in my root cellar with temperatures of around 35-48°F. I had potted them up and moistened the soil, leaving them in the cool temperatures for about 13 weeks until the flower buds were beginning to show. At that point I put them into some bright light to let the leaves grow out and flowers bloom. Once in full bloom I placed them on my desk in my office where I spend a lot of time. I have another pot of hyacinths that I took out of the cold room at a later date so i can have a longer period of blossoms to enjoy! And enjoy I most certainly do - beautiful colors and scent!
The Valentine Cards I received from the kids and although I don't care for the commercialism of Valentine's Day, it's the smiles and hugs that came with those cards that I cherish.
That got me wondering how this giving of Valentine cards got started.
According to the British Library this tradition originated back in the late 14th century with Geoffrey Chaucer’s poem Parliament of Fowls
It describes a group of birds which gather together in the early spring – on ‘seynt valentynes day’ – to choose their mates for the year. It seems that the poem sparked a tradition. In 1477, Margery Brews, a Norfolk woman, wrote a letter to her cousin John Paston, calling him ‘my right well beloved Valentine’. It is the earliest known letter of its kind.
Who am I to balk at tradition and we certainly can use more love in the world.
It was fun to see the kids giving out their cards to all their classmates with the smiles and joy at receiving these little gifts!
Hope you all had a Happy Valentine's Day with much love!

I'm with you on commercial valentines, but it's been like that since I was in school, many many decades ago.
That's probably why I make my own each year....
I love the smell and aroma of hyacinth's in the garden! I don't grow them often, but I'm always happy with them when I have them.
Thank you for entering!
Greetings my friend. Some bad news and some good news.
The bad first, for some reason hyacinth flowers ended up in our rivers a few yeas ago and now they are choking all of our dams.
The good news. My SX60s zoom tracker is almost done kaput and I got a new SX70 at a bargain price. It is smaller and lighter than the SX60 with the same zoom, but has many other improvements.
I have not used it yet, as I have grown so used the SX60 that it has become a part of my hand and I will continue to use it up to its last breath Lol.
A great history about the Valentine card's origin.
Good luck in the contest!
Blessings!
