Pictorialism. Is it art or imitation?

It is known that in the art of photography there is a period when it was difficult to define the genre of this art. Many believed that a photograph should look somewhat like a painting. It is no coincidence that the artists of that time were the first photographers. This is how a special style of photography called pictorialism appeared.

Pictorialismis an international style and aesthetic movement that dominated photography during the later 19th and early 20th centuries. There is no standard definition of the term, but in general it refers to a style in which the photographer has somehow manipulated what would otherwise be a straightforward photograph as a means of "creating" an image rather than simply recording it. Typically, a pictorial photograph appears to lack a sharp focus (some more so than others), is printed in one or more colors other than black-and-white (ranging from warm brown to deep blue)

This style is well recognizable. You will easily notice the simplicity of the composition, soft focus, special expressiveness, stylized as a drawing or engraving by the artist.
And although it is called "childhood illness in photography", this style is close to me. Sometimes I experiment with photography. I am inspired by simple drawings by artists.
