I'll Be Writing on the Walls

(Not literally)

While off work, I have been combing through my writing archives to see what I can find. My original goal was to dust off my Master's thesis and reimagine it. I want to publish the collection (it's a cycle of short stories that explores the Lebanese Civil War and resulting Lebanese-American diaspora--largely based on my childhood). I have some ideas I believe will suit the collection well, but I can't find a digital or physical copy.

Considering I'm basically a writing draft hoarder, this is pretty shocking. Also considering my draft hoarding tendencies, it's not surprising that I turned up a novel I was in the process of rewriting. This one is about a girl who is dealing with the cultural expectations of her family versus society. That makes it sound boring, but I have rededicated myself to the redrafting process, so I'm hesitant to share anything more. Just as I save digital, printed and handwritten drafts, I also chronically abandon my works-in-progress.

Usually this happens because I am busy teaching other writers. Over at the Center for Creative Writing, I teach the following:

Writing through Trauma to Truth (parts 1 and 2)

Blogging Your Voice, Crafting Your Niche

Generative Writing (which is one-on-one coaching)

It took me far too long to realize that I love teaching more than writing, especially when it comes to trauma writing. Which brings me back to these stories I've abandoned--they are all trauma writing; work I wasn't ready to face even though I had started to get it out.

Those traumas are largely healed. This pandemic means I have more time to face myself. Why not close a few chapters, literally and figuratively?

Next week I am doing something for myself I've always wanted to do. I've put it off for more than a decade because I was the primary caregiver for my children. The plan? A week long retreat in an AirBnB where I intend to complete that redraft. No kids. No other people. Just me and my writing. All possible because the price to stay is a fraction of its original cost.

I'm excited!
