The sore dwarf and the bucked-tooth giant

In a couple hours I am going to knock off from work and then take the rest of my summer vacations. I have two weeks ahead of doing nothing...

...but working on the house constantly, to try and get the upstairs surfaces moving, after I sand and paint the basement window frames prior to the plinth gettting painted, before I plant new grass and hopefully a hedge.

"Vacation"

Of course, it isn't all bad and after talking with my supervisor, I will also take some of the time held in my hours bank in September (around training deliveries), where I have about 10 full days held. Travelling makes it pretty easy to collect hours, and not travelling makes it very hard to claim them back. I have also put a lot of extra hours in over the furlough period that didn't fit into my 60%, so I will be working quite a few shorter days when I can.

This is the "new" view on the street.

IMG_20200806_213319.jpg

The earthmovers have spent the last two days clearing stumps from the hedge, creating a gravel driveway, preparing a place for the future terrace and digging out a 50cm deep square that will eventually be insulated and turned into a glass house using our old windows. Three days ago from the position the shot was taken, it was only possible to see the top floor windows and now, you can see "Bucky, the great white giant" - which sounds like a 1930s boxer.

Bucky looks happy

The garden feels strange without the privacy of the jungle of the hedge, but it also feels like a park and a place you can breathe. The hedge to come will be far more linear than the last and offer privacy in a few years time (once it is more mature) without encroaching into the garden inside. Fences seemingly aren't a thing here, at least not the 8-foot, barbed-wire one I would want.

One thing with having a bare Bucky is that the side of the house can't be used to store junk with the feeling that no one can see it. Storing things behind bushes in Finland is a losing strategy anyway, as they will lose their leaves in the Autumn and they won't grow back for 8 months. You can see how people "trick" themselves into thinking they stored things out of sight once the winter rolls round. Though, the snow covers everything too and makes even the messiest garden look neat.

Because of what has gone on this week outside, I have spent an inordinate amount of time in the garden working through the evenings and have been able to observe the expressions of people walking past. This is a relatively old neighborhood where the turnover of residents is low, which means people take interest in changes and probably gossip a fair bit. The house has been so obscured from the road for so many years behind either leaves or a jungle of branches, many people might have forgotten it is here, with some seeming surprised at what it looks like.

Today, the worker who is doing our attic is upstairs putting in the insulation with his son, because he doesn't know when he can come back and when it gets cold, the top floor was exposed to the weather. Right now the weather is warm and upstairs is sweltering - I am glad I don't have to spend too much time up there today, other than clearing rubbish from my demolition work, which they have kindly offered to take away in their trailer.

The problem is, my legs are hammered, my arms are failing and my body is saying - Taraz, fuck off. Yet, it has to be done and there are schedules to keep that I don't have control over, which means manning up and getting into it and crying in my sleep later due to the aches. I should probably take a day or two to recover, or a drink or two to dull the pain. Drinking is faster.

Right - off to work I go, like a dwarf.

The sore dwarf and the bucked-tooth giant.

If there was a prize for inanimate objects having faces you house would fucking win it!

Pity the old G-dog couldn't be there to work supervise the work, carry things eat lunch and generally help out be a passive watcher whilst all that work is going on.

Anyway, don't let your body tell you to fuck off...You gotta take control!

The Pareidolia Prize - more desired than a Pulitzer.

Would have been good to have you here for this - it is hard work at times, but not bad work. Kind of mindless so I use it to discuss things. I generally work alone though...

The trailer is full, so I am done :)

I did a post about pareidolia back in the day on shitit.com (you know where.)

P.s. I'm good at supervising.

I like privacy but having a jungle around the house is not my idea of privacy. Bushes, trees are find though. Storing garbage behind a jungle is again something I would never do. Maybe it's not visible from outside as it's protected by the jungle but still, I can see it and it would make me angry.

It's hard work now but it's going to end one day eventually and then you can lay back and enjoy the view, knowing you did a great job. After all you're doing it for yourself and your family well being.

The "jungle" in Finland doesn't have snakes, spiders and wild pigs at least :)

I am looking forward to this time. I like the idea of living in a place that I (and several paid professionals) have built.

You just thing the jungle doesn't have spiders. Let the jungle grow and you'll see the spiders.

The spiders here are harmless though. I'm not eve scared, and I have arachnophobia :D

Oh, I was also meant to say about the "I can see it" thing you mentioned. I reckon this is part of being a professional - just because it isn't seen, doesn't mean it should be there. I like the Japanese process of design where they think about how something looks, even when it isn't going to be seen. It results in them investigating more deeply.

I am amazed that with all that work, pain and aching you managed to write a blogpost. You should write another post on how dedicated and timely you are when it comes to blogging.😇

One thing with having a bare Bucky is that the side of the house can't be used to store junk with the feeling that no one can see it.

That's funny and true. I can be the guiltiest person in the world who procrastinates to the point where it came to me one day and asked me to be it's brand ambassador. Should take a leaf of inspiration from now on.

And yes, that house face with four protruding tooth, I cannot unsee it now.

I haven't missed a day since mid-2017 - through thick and thin.

Procrastination is a funny animal - I wonder why we are so prone to it?

Kudos to that. I can only wonder how one can do that. But, that is impressive for sure.
I actually looked into it to understand why I procrastinate even with a clear understanding of the fact that not doing a task could jeopardize my whole career. There are different types and I associated myself with 'the perfectionist' type.

As they define, I procrastinate because I don't want to start the job because I want to make that work the best in the world. With that in mind, i think too much about it and do not even start the work. This type of procrastination rigs people's mind in thinking they have to produce the finest version of their product in their first draft.

There are other types and mental issues as well that trigger procrastination.

Why would you want an 8ft barbed wire fence? How tall is 8ft anyway? [uses internet to convert] okay pretty high.

Hehe Bucky is cute XD

I don't know anyone who has "done nothing" on vacation (or any other time they could be doing nothing) but I think that's more about the type of people that I hang out with XD

also I take that very literally so I might actually not know anyone who does nothing

ps (because pre-emptive derpy reply hit) hope you're able to meet all your schedules and then get some rest :)

Why would you want an 8ft barbed wire fence?

"to keep the neighbors to the south out."

And the North - East & West...

I will take tonight off for a few hours after putting Smallsteps to bed -then back to it in the morning. I have some time to get things done, but with the schedules people have changed on short notice, I'd rather not have to rush.

Looks you are having fun!! 😂
Al least you will feel great once things start getting finished.
When I came back from my cycling ride I found this guy in the sidewalk of the summer house unloading two big bags of gravel so we will have a couple of days of work spreading it all around. I say two days because with 35ºC it is impossible to work outside doing physical stuff before 5 pm!

We are going to have to do similar for the glasshouse later, but I am glad that the hole is dug already =)

Is it just me, or do you also find it incredible how strong those sacks are?

Ah, so your house has a face.

Maybe to make the look happier you can paint another window at a 45 degree upward slant at the start and the end of the 4 windows at the bottom. So as to turm the straight line into a smile lol.
So, we can bucky into a smile, but there's not much that we can do about the construction of the dwarf whatsoever hahaha.

But you are right, there's nothing that a few drinks cannot fix!

Or put a blind half down and make it look like it is winking :D

Nope - the dwarf is screwed.

But you are right, there's nothing that a few drinks cannot fix!

I think I will head to the shop and grab some tonic.

Yeah, what a cool idea, but a winking house might give some snooping neighbors the wrong thoughts my friend.

Not yet, but oh yeah, the dwarf should take care not to go beyond the limits, as a weeks muscle pains van be debilitating.

Tonic? Unless you add it to a secret ingredient, tonic is not going to be the answer. You need a muscle stimulant.
