OLD BARN № 079

I rather like seeing the occasional barn with a couple of regular glass-paned windows, as I would imagine it would make the inside brighter and cheerier for working inside. But, admittedly, it makes it harder to determine if it's a barn or an old homestead. Of course, being able to go on the property and walk around the building would help, but that is not always an option — depending on how one is dressed that day, depending on how much time one has, depending on whether there's a farmhouse nearby where permission can be asked...

In the case of this structure, I am thinking "barn" instead of an "old house" because there is no chimney, which is necessary for warmth in the winter. The unusually-high roof on the left side probably indicates the presence of a loft, which could be a sleeping-loft if there were a chimney, so I am thinking hay-loft. Being able to see the other sides of the building would, of course, answer the question, but I am guessing there is probably a large bay-door on the opposite side.

Even if I learn at some future time that this is a homestead rather than a barn, I'm still glad that I got a shot and cataloged it in my project. Structures such as this won't last forever, even with proper upkeep. Many of the barns I have photographed over the years are no longer standing, and I think it is wonderful to have had a record of how they appeared once-upon-a-time.

In the following aerial view, the previous barn (078) can be seen on the right, and this one (079) is on the left. The white dot shows another barn (176) that will be forthcoming in a future post.

For those who like seeing the original photographs, here is the way the shot image started, from a rather crappy cellphone shot that day before being made prettier with some brightening, contrast enhancement, and creative processing.

Another dandy. As always, thank you not only for the photograph but for the location care and history you provide.

I'm going to bet there was a chimney on the other side. The doors and windows scream house to me. The two we can see aren't big enough for a cow. If that started life as a barn it was a high budget building...

Hi there kitty, I am now wondering how many barns you've captured? lol

Correct me if I'm wrong, I think barn is like a storage house or something else?

I'm amazed at how you brought back this old structure that it's hard to find now.

I forget the exact number, but is it over 300! 😁

Yes, a "barn" is a storage house, usually on a farm. it can be used to store equipment (tractors, tillers, etc.) or feed such as hay for animals. It can also provide shelter for animals in bad weather, a place to milk cows & goats, and so forth! I am sure there is a word for it in the Filipino languages, too. 🙂

Hmmm. I'm going to come up with a third option, and think maybe a utility house, or a utility barn. I'm not sure it'd be for big animals; I'm thinking equipment of some form. Maybe a place to get away from the spouse for a bit!

Keeping photography on the old barns has been a rewarding project if some are now gone. Always enjoy seeing old structures, knowing the history would be fun @thekittygirl
