Have you always wanted to ask me something?
Now is your chance, there won't be another!
(ok, ok, there will)

Hit me up in the comment section with a question and I will do my best to answer it.

Want to do your own AMA?

There is a community for that™

Want to check out my previous AMAs?

What is an AMA?

AMA is a format popular on Reddit where one person offers to answer questions for a limited period of time.

How long will I answer questions?

I will be available the next few hours and should answer questions pretty quickly, but I will try to answer questions for as long as receive them.

I nominate @khaleelkazi, @inertia, @eonwarped to do an AMA!

So let's get this shit started!

Heyo, Mark.

Will you move your autovote to, at least, minimum 5 minutes so that manual curators can have some incentive to curate manually (voting first) and to give them a bit of time to engage on the post?

If I may ask another question... Do you think manual curation is a dying art? Is that something that is still respected on our blockchain?

Whoops, that's 3 questions but are connected tightly.

Thanks for this initiative and possible answers.

Peace yo,

Mr. Spacely

No, everyone else is doing it. I'm actually one of the few actually giving out a vote worth a damn ($3-$5+). Most can give big votes but only choose to give out a couple cents as it is purely for curation rewards and not for actually supporting people.

I don’t think it is dead but as long as we are not onboarding new authors on a regular basis there really isn’t a whole lot to manually curate.

It is very respected but I can’t justify spending 4-12 hours reading posts daily where most are minimum effort and highly rewarded. I choose to support people I feel produce good content and/or putting in effort. If either change, I adjust my votes. This allows me to focus on other things as well.

Not the answer I suspect you are looking for a but it is honest.

Ok, I understand that point of view but I don't agree with it because it's not good for the future.

I agree, most of the time while manually curating I am looking at low effort posts that are wasting my time.

Thanks, I was looking for an honest answer so I am more than satisfied.

I don't agree with it either, but that's what is going on. If you don't participate your stake becomes worth less than those do.

I actually give out real votes though, most of the people voting early are giving out the smallest vote they can and it is nothing about distributing rewards. Just look at the first five minutes of any post to see what I am talking about.

I know what r u talking about since I am manually curating and it is frustrating to compete with those autovotes and it demotivates me a lot. I can't even read a full fckin post and all of a sudden it gets autovoted like crazy.

But, I won't go to the dark side and auto vote. At least not yet while I have some motivation left in me.

Do you have your own list of select authors for auto votes ? Or you have some one to do manual curation as well for low paying posts and authors?...

I have my own list I maintain, and I check up on them from time to time and look for new ones regularly.

Hope I am not blacklisted for asking too many question...just another one..

This simple AMA post get you $22 worth of rewards, so far more than what other authors get who put a lot of effort in making their content better and attractive.....do you think this is fair for the hive eco- system ?? Or are you happy to get this kind of easy rewards.....didnt you consider denying rewards for such kind of posts ??

I do not vote on my post nor do I influence the amount gained by it. Post like these are all about the comment section and engagement, and I do them once every 1-3 months. Most of my posts (including this one by way of responding to people) I put in a lot of work into.

You are a big fan of VSCode. Have you tried other IDEs and settled on that as your favorite or is that just what you started using and stuck to it?

I tried ATOM and found it very slow and clunky.
I was a big fan of Sublime Text and was disappointed how the company was abandoning it and making false promises.
Once I started to use VS Code and saw all the improvements, I was hooked. It was better than anything I have tried.

I do have full Visual Studio which I used for mobile app development, I have tried PyCharms, and some other editors.

Whats your thought on PyCharms? Its what I've been using for python and like it quite a lot, especially since it makes venv very easy.

I haven't used it enough to have much thought, I tried it after I already was hooked on VS Code, it is one of IDEs I used the least.

I do know a lot of people really love it though and likely can't go wrong.

I know you have great programming skills. Do you think you have sufficient skills to build a Hive Browser, which can also serve as a Hive dApps Hub or dApp Store? If not solo, do you think you could gather a team and build something like this. If not again, what kind of App would you be interested to build on top of Hive if you had time and resources for it. If none, why? :)

0
0
0.000
avatar

I am not really a great programmer, it's merely something I do as I avoid doing something I can't get a computer to do for me. I don't spend enough time on it to actually become great.

I could probably build a browser though if I put my time into it. A hub or store could be as simple as a web page, not sure why it would need a browser and I would be very skeptical about entering my keys near someone else's browser that isn't trusted.

I like to build middleware, like automation to make things better and easier.
I am also working on some games for Hive.

If it is an open source Hive browser it can be trusted with peer review. I think it can be powerful for Hive economy and user adoption as we can integrate protocol features into it like rewarding content consumers across all Hive ecosystem, creating a more decentralized network of browsers, etc. Learning from projects like Brave and Nimiq, etc. Creating decentralized Apps store as an alternative to Apple and Google stores.

One more question. What are your thoughts about removing HBD haircut based on supply ratio. Why not have 1 HBD be worth $1 worth of Hive. Why have 3 day average, why not just use current prices? I think that could be powerful too for Hive. For some reason we are scared of it.

0
0
0.000
avatar

The haircut is to prevent the HBD debt from becoming overwhelming. HBD is a promise of $1 of Hive in the future. Without the haircut, we could reach well into the double digit debt ratio.

The 3 day average is to minimize manipulation.

0
0
0.000
avatar

I understand that. Without it we can do much better if we were willing to take the risks and let the free market do its magic. Previously increase in hbd demand and prices caused increase in demand and prices for hive.

0
0
0.000
avatar

That was a fluke, Steem and SBD was listed on the Korean Exchange UpBit, and a bunch of people bought SBD instead of Steem as they didn't know any better and then the price went up a bit and others fomo'd and it became a small snowball going down a large hill. At the time, there was 10-20x less SBD printed and other market conditions that created a perfect storm, an event I doubt will ever happen again.

Note: Apple's App Store does not approve (d)app browsers anymore. Because they contain downloadable code Apple can not verify (read: which can change - Trust Wallet already removed its dapp browser on iOS). App Store review guidelines relevant rule

Note 2: Android 11 also started finally blocking in-app code downloads.

I love me a good dapp browser and would love Hive Wallet to grow but those are arguably justifiable decisions both platforms are making. A lot more code gets downloaded than is often good for the user. Shallow position? Yes. Justifiable? If you're on iOS you probably don't get updated, nor care, about all new malware issues in Android. Here's the most recent one.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. At some point someone or some project will emerge as a decentralized Apps Store. I even think we will have decentralized systems based devices in the future, sort of an open source for hardware like open source software.

(Edited)

They exist. There's plenty of them. And they are the main sources of malware making it to devices.

Lineage OS with F-Droid store is pretty awesome. If you can find all apps needed for your work flow. And Lineage OS runs on quite a bunch of droids. But isn't universal yet.

Hey brother,

Do you plan on buying a new Pc? And if so, what would it be?

0

avatar

Yes, very soon. I'm just waiting to get my hands on an Nvidia 3080 and the new AMD 4000 chips. I build my own PCs, so it will be something I build.

Current system is:

Intel 7700K @ 5GHz
32GB Ram
NVME & SSD drives
Dual NVidia 1070
27" 144Hz Acer Monitor and two Dell IPS Monitors
10Gbit Ethernet to NAS
Topre RealForce Keyboard
SteelSeries Sensei 310
Shure PG42 USB Microphone
Sennheiser 598 SR Headphones

I have always gone Intel, but this time I am going to go for AMD and my first "extreme" grade CPU. I am also going to get PCI Express 4 NVME drives, one of the reasons I want to go to AMD (other reason is cores).

I know we've chatted a few times about Pc's. I loved building Pc's back in the day as well. Learned how much it cost to repair them and thought, "surely it can't be TOO hard" lol...

This was in 2006 mind you. I had, in relation to your thoughts, always had AMD with ASUS MOBO, but went Intel my last one... the days of the "New Dual Core". Man things keep changing...

Would love to see photos of that sexy beast! 🤘

I have not, but they look really sweet. I have looked at a few lately I saw on Reddit. I am not a big fan of Retro games, but I have built quite a few RetroPies for others. They are really cool and I have seen a lot of happy people with them.

I was really tempted to get one for my recent build for a friend.

I am trying to run a GPi Case build, but I think the included Pi is DOA. No LED.

I would test it outside of the case with a 2.5A+ USB charger.
If you have a known good Raspberry Pi OS SD Card, I would boot off that instead of anything included. Try to make it as simple of a configuration as possible.

If it is defective, I suspect they will return it no problem, they seem to have a good reputation.

My first suspect would be power though, if you have any known good chargers that can provide at least 2A ideally 2.5-3A depending if it is a Pi 3 or Pi 4 I would test with that.

(Edited)

I was running the official charger that came with my previous Pi Zero. There are some config steps to take before installing anything in the case.

Update: It seems to be the supplied SD card at fault after all. Dodgy no-name piece of crap. But I have a couple spare 32 GB Samsung Evo cards thanks to your recommendation.

If it is something you are serious about, I'd switch the card even if it wasn't bad. SD cards perform horribly on the Raspberry Pi, and the Samsung EVO+ is so much better than others, it makes a huge difference when you are talking the difference between 0.5MB/s and 8Mb/s.

Just wanted to share after noticing your interest in it.

Here's a good tutorial if you would like to get one running with a screen.

https://hive.blog/hive-196387/@anthonyadavisii/check-out-my-retropie-with-3-5-inch-lcd-screen-how-1596119088

It's kind of difficult to make out the activity on screen (may have to squint a little bit) some of the later gen games but it's cool for the novelty and portability. This was Pi 3 B iirc but I do have a zero which I haven't purposed yet.

We have a bunch of gamers on Hive nowadays, many of them seems to upload a gameplay video to YouTube and share the link on Hive. Others are live-streaming and post a link to Twitch. Some are sharing highlights of their gameplays etc. (Myself included).

Some would say that it requires minimal effort for a post with nothing but a video link and others understand how much time & effort it takes to create a highlight video for instance..

What do you think would be the best approach for gamers in general?

I understand that it's a rather big question, so let's say that it comes down to building an audience and generating rewards at the same time. How do you think one should do it?

(Edited)

Live streaming games has a huge audience and is a massive market. Unfortunately Hive doesn't have a good live streaming service that can compete with other options. We have Vimm but without recordings it doesn't make for a good post.

I stream games from time to time and post them on Hive, I think it is great content for those who are interested in it, especially potential non-Hive users.

That being said, I have seen many share micro videos just to put out a post, and it isn't very valuable to Hive.

When Dlive was around, I would easily have 10-30 people watching my stream (all Steem users) and it was amazing. It was very attractive to stream directly to Steem via Dlive because it worked as good as Twitch, almost guaranteed to get some viewers (good luck on Twitch/YouTube unless you stream daily for years).

If they are really putting in effort into their stream (narrating, really playing, engaging with people that join) I don't see a problem with it. We had a few really good streamers like @realseb that we lost that produced great streaming content.

Unfortunately we don't have enough users to have every niche (and ultimately communities) be popular and thriving.

People produce content in different ways, and live streaming is a very valid and popular form of content, but like all content on Hive, many put minimal effort into it and most of it is never consumed.

Thank you for the great response, I totally agree with the things you said about DLive.

What do you think would be the best:
Have a new "Dlive" on Hive or use YouTube/Twitch etc, in an attempt to draw in more people?

I mean, the Dlive days were great. Not only could you stream & use your VODs, you had a chance to get decent sized upvotes on your content as well.. +the viewers!

But was Dlive something that actually benefitted Steem during those "glory" days, and do you think "Dlive" on Hive would be beneficial for Hive in general?

0

I would say a new dlive if we could bring more people to Hive with it like they did with PewDiePie, it could be amazing. YouTube/Twitch has the audience, but people are unhappy there and competition is brutal.

My lil sis is an example. I brought her in, paid for her data subscription and explained everything she needed to know only for the condition she keeps being active and blog at least once a day but with everything I did, she stopped blogging.

Now, I am waiting for the data subscription I paid for her to finish or expire and she comes back to me to subscribe again. 😅😂

Social media is hard, Hive is no different. Although I honestly think Hive is far easier than any social media I have been a part of.

Doing well on social media involves persistence, consistency, and doing something someone (hopefully a lot of someones) care about.

It is easy to be discouraged on Hive as votes are not always fair and they don't always follow quality content. It's no different than anywhere else in life, you either fight through it and power on against all odds or not.

As a witness, we are doing things to try to bring a balance to the ecosystem but it isn't as easy as flipping this switch or turning that dial.

0
0
0.000
avatar

Yeah that's true. Hive is a lot easier than other social media in the sense that you can easily get more attention to your content by engaging with others.

I pretty enjoy hive like this not only because of the votes but for the people I relate with here. So I have gotten a few people that comes to comment on my blog while I active do on theirs and to others that are yet to visit mine.

Yeah, the votes here makes someone get discouraged especially when you spend a lot of time making a content that you felt will attract a lot of reward and nothing comes forth. I know that feeling 😅😂😂😅 but I have kept this in mind if I don't get today, I would get tomorrow, BETTER DAYS AHEAD. That's what have kept me moving so far.

Moreover, I am glad my living is not dependent on what I earn on Hive. So my earnings is directed to building my account and supporting smaller accounts.

Have original content posted first on Hive then cross post on another social media site, or have original content posted on other social media site then cross post on Hive which method brings value to the blockchain more? or it doesn't matter really matter.

Been having this internal debate lately whether I should post my own works here first or on a social media site that has more traffic.

0

0.000
avatar

The site it is posted first generally gains the most advantage, this is due to how search engine optimization works, but when you post on other sites that have more authority, they can sometimes steal that advantage. Linking to the original (on Hive for example) will help a lot.

In general, search engines do not like duplicate content.

What's the story behind Twitter Avatar? I've heard the story about your Hive avatar and like it. What about the twitter one?

It's really simple, it was just what I was using on Hive at the time.

How I got there though started on Steem. When I got on Steem I didn't really have any specific profile, I can't even remember what I used but I would frequently post Firefly gifs.

Someone made me a cover image and I switched to a Firefly theme profile. I used this for as long as I can remember until Justin Sun came along and Roy kept calling me Marty instead of Marky. At the time I switched my avatar and cover image to be Marty from Back to the Future.

When I moved to Hive, I wanted to come up with a different theme. I wasn't too committed to anything and just did a quick search for something interesting and chose a Punisher theme.

12029.jpg

I thought this was "good enough" for the time. This is about when I created a new Twitter account for Hive and used the same Avatar to match.

I was contacted by someone saying they thought my avatar was too "scary" for someone in my position. I made a joke saying I could change it to a bunny. Being the jokester I am, I went ahead and changed it to the least scary thing I could, a rainbow fence cover image and a bunny avatar. This happened to be in line with Easter timeframe, so I left it for a while until I felt it was not funny anymore and went back to Firefly as I already had it made up and it was ready to go.

At some point I was planning on doing something different, but there just hasn't been any motivation.

Hey! First time asking a question into this kind of posts but I'm really curious about your answer knowing that you are a powerful person on the blockchain :)

I think topics that most people are into (Hive, Crypto, and so on) do best as there isn't enough users to really see all topics have thriving communities. So the ones where there is common interest will get the most attention.

I got some serious question here, Marky.

What do you think about our HIVETwitter marketing campaign? Don't you think its good that some of our witnesses support it? Because as far as we can see that there is not much support from our witness except for you for creating great twitter bots, we appreciate you for doing it, but having larger support for our marketing game is what we should be more consider, shouldn't we?

The future of #Hive looks bright; however, there is something that worries me:

Do you think we have failed to explain the benefits of the #Hive blockchain? I mean, I was a project manager and one of the things I heard most from the developers was how little patience they had with the common user, to the point that they popularized a phrase: "User is not people". Do you think that same lack of patience has played a role in explaining the benefits of this technology to the masses?

Sheppard, an interesting one. We never found out his real past in the movie or show (from memory, I will have to go back and watch it again). I had just recently found out that there is a comic book series!

Why do you masquerade downvoting people you dislike or have a disagreement as if you were downvoting based on content?

Take my 2 hour livestream that you took downvoted 1+ HPB 1 post of what was essentially a little over 2 HBD total.

Does it make you feel bigger as a man to enact punitive downvotes that would ensure my 2 hrs+ (considering prep time) content would receive 1 HBD less because you have a problem with me as a person?

Thanks 👌
