Why your upvotes matter

During the last couple of days, I had plenty of questions that about voting on hive and I thought it would be a good idea to make some videos to explain how to improve your voting activity.

Your upvotes is your participation in the creation of new hive

Hive is a combination of a proof of stake and a proof of brain platform. Every day new hive is created. It is the stakeholders that define how this hive is distributed. The more stake you own, the more value you can attribute. You attribute the value through the upvotes that you give to others.

The biggest mistake – not to vote

If you don't vote, you will delegate the distribution of new hive to all the other people who are actually voting and in addition to that, you will lose your curation reward potential. Without votes, no curtion rewards.

Use your votes

Each time you cast an upvote, your voting power will decrease but it regenerates over time. You can give a total of 10 upvotes worth 100% each every day and have your account completely regenerated.

It is however also possible to split your votes. You can vote with 50% for example. If you do that you can vote 20 times per day with 50%.

Avoid 100% voting power

The most important is that you avoid to have your voting power idle at 100%. When this happens you are missing some potential upvotes that you could have given.

You can check your voting power and your voting activity on Hivestats.io.

Mind the dust!

Another important aspect about voting is the dust effect. Upvotes that don't carry at least 100 HP worth don't generate curation rewards.

How to calculate how much hive your upvote carries :

(Staked Hive Power – Delegations + incoming delegations) x voting power x vote percentage = Hive carried with your upvotes

You should make certain that your upvotes are never worth less than 100 HP. If you have 1000 Hive Power staked, this means that you should always vote with at least 15%. Otherwise you might lose your curation rewards for this vote.

I will try to make some more videos on the topic of upvotes. If you have some questions regarding it, please write them as a comment below.

Congratulations @achim03! You have completed the following achievement on the Hive blockchain and have been rewarded with new badge(s) :

You received more than 4000 HP as payout for your posts and comments.
Your next payout target is 5000 HP.
The unit is Hive Power equivalent because your rewards can be split into HP and HBD

You can view your badges on your board and compare yourself to others in the Ranking

Wow that is a lot to take in.
I am going to have to study this a little more.
I only have about 200 Hive staked.
And am at 67% voting power so I am guessing that number is good.
Figuring out how many upvotes I need to do everyday is the tricky part.
Can you vote too much?

I try to keep my voting power between 85 and 95%. When it goes too low, you can fall in the "dust" trap. Meaning you have 200 Hive Power and you vote with 60%, you actually only upvote with 120 Hive Power (200x0.6 = 120HP). So if you now choose to vote with only 80% (200x0.6x0.8 = 96HP), then you will probably not get any curation rewards. So voting too much isn't too good either :-). It's quite a science!

I had no idea I was voting too much.
I will cut my votes in half more often so I can vote as many times as I want.
In my position it seems like 30% might even be better.
Great stuff!

I would vote a bit less often but still with at least 80% voting power. Otherwise you won't get any curation rewards :-)

Achim, I am happy our discussion yesterday helped to create a post. 😀 I was trying to undelegate some CTP power but it looks like there is nothing pending in my Hivestats account. When I tried doing the transaction I didn't use the @ sign. Maybe that's why? I will try it again and see.

I think it didn't pass. You should go to hive-engine to undelegate and make sure that you write the address you want to undelegate from. In Hive-engine you will see that it will take a couple of days until funds are undelegated.

thanks for the great explanation, as well as the formula. i've been voting all over the place and did notice the "Hide Dust Payouts" toggle button on HiveStats rewards page, but i wasn't sure how it all worked.

i've still been earning other layer 2 tokens so i didn't think much of it, but i'll definitely adjust my voting technique.

When we have little hive, it's easier to curate with 2nd layer tokens. The dust part is much smaler for these tokens and it's easier to collect and stake them. It's a good way to start and with time, your hive power will also increase.

I haven't really cared about HIVE votes since I expect my tribe tokens to be worth more. Maybe when I have more HP in the future and I can actually get a decent amount.

It's good to start building a stake with tribe tokens. It's much easier to actually get curation rewards with them than on hive. Over time, your hive power will increase automatically and then it's still early enough to start optimizing your voting activity :-)

Good explanation about voting! Well, I'm trying to do vote and comments manualy but it's the fact that is time consuming! 😎

I totally agree and we can't spend all our time with that either. My solution is to set automatic upvotes if my voting power gets above 95%. Like that if I don't have time to curate manually, the automatic upvotes kick in and I don't lose any curation rewards.

Do you know, do tribe have a dust threshold? And if they don't, what's stopping Hive to adopt a no-dust model? Do you have any idea? I haven't thought about this in a while.

I think that tribes have a threshold as well but it is very small compared to hive. I really don't get this dust model. It was probably set up so that people wouldn't create tons of accounts without hive power and upvote stuff and get curation rewards on autopilote.

That makes sense, it could be the reason. !ENGAGE 20
