Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Zone Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa! Welcome to Week 16 / Round 1 of the Hive Music Festival! I have only done original songs so far for the Hive Music Festival, and as long as I still have some original songs left in the bag, then the Hive Music Festival is the place for me to keep on revealing them! So here comes another one!

Do I have long hair again? No! I have had a busy week at the office planned out for this week, where the only day I worked from home was back on Tuesday, so I recorded it then before my recent haircut, but have only got around to uploading it for you now!

The song I want to play for you this week is called “Stay”.

THEME: I think it’s interesting that I wrote this song because I do tend to hate conflict. The song is about someone who would rather tell his lover: “Let’s not fight, I can be wrong, you can be right…” Sometimes this is the right thing to do, but not always, otherwise the relationship will have a building level of resentment!

MUSIC STRUCTURE: This song follows the “four chord miracle” structure! Haha! What do I mean? Well, many popular songs use the chord structure “1st major, 5th major, 6th minor, 4th major” (eg. G D Em C) or the same order but starting with the minor “6th minor, 4th major, 1st major, 5th major” (eg. Em C G D). There is actually a hilarious video by a comedy band “Axis of Awesome” that pushes this point home:

Another four-chord miracle you might notice a lot is “1st major, 6th minor, 4th major, 5th major” (eg. G Em C D).

PARTY TRICKS: Playing harmonica on a rack at the same time as guitar is not that much more difficult than singing at the same time, as long as you keep it relatively simple. My other trick I use quite often is the two-capo trick on guitar which allows for a kind of fake “Drop D” so that I can get more range out of the Dmaj chord!

I hope you like the song! Thank you very much for watching! I look forward to seeing your entries and hope to see you again next week!

Before I go: Please look out for my weekly cover request post on Thursday! If you make a song request in the comments, and then I attempt the song, you get rewarded with 50% of that post's rewards in HP! Lyrics for “Stay” by @jasperdick (original)

Stay, just for today, just for tonight
I don’t want to fight
I can be wrong, you can be right

You, you know I’m a fool
I’ve been wrong before and you forgave me
This, is just the same
Please don’t be mad, no don’t be angry!

Stay, just for today, just for tonight
I don’t want to fight
I can be wrong, you can be right
It, would be so lame
If we never fought, a boring shame…
So please, let’s kiss and make up
Then kiss again, and one more time now…

Stay, just for today, just for tonight
I don’t want to fight
I can be wrong, you can be right
Stay, just for today, just for tonight
I don’t want to fight
I can be wrong, you can be right

¡No!

no quiero pelear
Puedo estar equivocado, puedes tener razón

Tú, sabes que soy un tonto
Me he equivocado antes y me perdonaste

no quiero pelear

no quiero pelear
no quiero pelear
Puedo estar equivocado, puedes tener razón

You continue to impact my heart with your songs, I must say that listening to you play that harmonica makes me feel happy with those melodies that manage to captivate me.
Thank you for bringing your original songs and sharing them with us.

Wonderful interpretation, I like the positive energy that this song transmits. You motivate me to buy my harmonica. I need one in my life. I congratulate you and applaud you, dear Jasper.

A talented man like you may find it easy! They come in different keys similar to penny whistles.
There are two reeds per hole. One makes a sound when you breathe out. One makes a sound when you breathe in.
Pop music sounds good to emphasize the "out" notes in the same key. This is called "First Position" and is what I'm doing here.
With blues it makes sense to grab a harmonica five semitones up (eg. C harmonica for G blues) and then emphasize the "in" notes. This is called "Second Position" and I have done that for blues originals... Like "Lady Trouble" for the week before this.

A person who specialises in playing harmonica well may learn to bend the reed by changing mouth shape to get a different note out of it, maybe a similar concept to bending guitar strings... This is called "Third position"

You also get fancy big harmonicas called chromonicas that have all the notes and a sliding system to help you choose. I think Stevie Wonder played this style a lot!

Boah, cool kapo trick. So simple and so powerful, that was a real head crash on the table.
Always dropping the E string when I need Drop D tuning and then this. Gotta have a second one laying around here somewhere....

Great song. And !LOL for the Axis of Awesome link :-)

As you said, lots of great songs use that progression. Their own touch comes with the lyrics, the melody and the way it is played. You add your own as beautiful as ever :-)

I can't believe more people don't do the two capo trick! The second one not covering the 6th string is supposed to be for electric guitar (a Dunlop one) if that helps...

Yeah... I try find simple ways to sound a bit different. When you are playing solo acoustic, it is very easy for your sound to become similar for one song after the next... And I like to play around and avoid that!

It actually does, never would have figured to combine that.

And I like to play around and avoid that!

Well keep on doing it, you're good at it. 😄

Dude, another awesome song. I totally agree with you. I don't like conflicts either and much less with our partner and that's why in my house I'm the one who says the last word ¨If my love¨ hahaha.... This has saved me thousands of conflicts hahaha..... Now, I will not get tired of repeating it, your creativity to produce songs is great. I will not get tired of listening to you my friend. Thank you for so much love and so many songs....

Amigo, otra increíble canción. Totalmente concuerdo contigo.

I am very lucky to have a sweet wife who doesn't take advantage of it! Hahaha. We both like to make the other happy!

I have had some toxic friendships or bosses where it doesn't work... And a building resentment and insecurity can come up. These are usually people with short tempers who feel too emotional for constructive conflict on the day, so you land up thinking "this person must calm down and I will try again tomorrow"... But then they feel like the issue is over the next day, and don't want to go back to it... when nothing has actually been resolved for you...
