Quinoa: The Superfood
Superfood
Quinoa (keen-wah) is easily one of the more famous "superfoods" in the world. It is one of the best plant-based protein sources and is said to contain all of the nine essential amino acids.[1]It is also naturally gluten free and a good source of iron, magnesium and fiber. There are different colors of quinoa, the most common are red, black, yellow, and white.
Quinoa, though seeds, are classified as grains, that can be served with salads, cereals, and soups. They can also be used as pasta substitute in your dishes.
Nutritional Benefits of Quinoa
Quinoa is naturally high in the following vitamins and minerals, no wonder it has become so popular amongst the health conscious, most especially.
Protein | Fiber | Manganese |
Magnesium | Phosphorus | Folate |
Copper | Iron | Zinc |
Potassium | Vitamins B1, B2 and B6 | Small amounts of calcium, B3 (niacin) and vitamin E. |
My Favorite Quinoa Dish
Having said the above, it has not been long since I started eating quinoa. I actually found it boring when I saw them on salads (I saw it on pomegranate salad first), but then I started to search for some good recipes and the Quinoa Paella piqued my taste buds!
All right, the above photo does not really look like a paella, but more like seafood with quinoa. Lol. But yeah, it is "paella-inspired".
Ingredients:
- 1 cup quinoa
- 2 tomatoes, diced
- 1 onion, minced
- mixed sea food
- paprika powder
- salt to taste
- optional: broccoli and Chinese cabbage
How to:
- Wash the quinoa. Put quinoa in a shallow pot, or a pan and let boil in 2 cups of water. (You can use broth for a tastier flavor)
- Add the diced tomatoes, onions, and paprika powder. Let it simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally. Season with salt.
- Add the mixed sea foods when the water has reduced.
- Add the vegetables and let cook for further 5 minutes.

Yes @brittandjosie, I'm getting ready for the Hive PUD day. Will perhaps do my pre-hive post tomorrow.
Stay amazing! :D
Quinoa is incredible but something we eat rarely cos it's super expensive here in Thailand. I DO worry about the environmental issues its popularity has caused in the world, as the western tables demand more than its indigenous community can sustainably provide.
I might try this recipe though, but substitute mushrooms for seafood. 😍
Yeah, it is expensive. This pack though, is the cheapest I could find ~$5 for a 300g pack.
Quinoa paella!!!! That is a MAJESTIC idea!!!
I've been craving seafood terribly these past days even though I don't eat seafood at all. If I could put my hands on some right now, I would definitely cook this. Looks delicious!
