¿Gusanos para la cena?

In the Amazon rainforest live some quite peculiar caterpillars, which besides being abundant, are a great source of protein and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus and iron, among others.

Grandpa told us that this is one of the foods with more nutritional content that they consume, of course they don't do it all year round, but in the very hot seasons, these caterpillars reproduce quickly, destroying the flora that surrounds them, which is why harvesting them becomes an environmental contribution.

Grandfather and grandmother have a very particular diet, in the case of grandmother only consume animals that are the product of hunting, among the rarest I saw were the frogs, birds and worms, this is complemented by foods that harvest as corn, cassava and fruit like flakes, among others.

The bachacos are some of those exotic animals that I tried and I took home for others to try. It is very fun to see the faces and reactions of my friends and family when I first show them.

Grandpa, on the other hand, has a strict diet because he is a shaman. While he was there, I saw him eat only fish broth with chili, and he added manioc to this from time to time, or he ate it with casabe and catara (a spice made from bachaco). Grandfather rarely consumes salt or sugar.

But the children who automatically became our tour guides and protectors when they arrived without our knowing it... They were active hunters, they had the habit of collecting things along the way, one of those things was these worms, which I swear that no matter how hard I looked for their name, I couldn't find it, and the closest thing I got was a few called "zatz".

I only have the information that I collected during my experience, so for this reason I will only tell you about what I saw and what they told me in the jungle:

These worms are very abundant there, so much so that we could go to the river to bathe and as we turned around each child had one in his hand. I'm not lying when I tell you that even though I recorded them and played with the experience, these worms caused me some repulsion.

One day in the morning, after the Ñua ceremony, the grandfather told us to get ready for a trip to the jungle; a path was going to be opened so that we could take tourists sometime. So I got dressed, put on some boots and we started the trip.

After 6 hours of walking, having just come down from the most beautiful place I have ever visited in my life, the grandfather decided to make a technical stop to pick up a booty he saw when we started the walk, so he sent one of the young people who were with us to look for them because we had to climb several trees and I was excited about the event, I ran after him to see how they did it.

When we arrived at the trees I was surprised by the amount of worms that were there, they were around a thousand worms dispersed in 3 trees; this day I realized that these people respect incredibly the fauna of the place and only take what is strictly necessary. So the boy chose a tree (the easiest one to climb) and started collecting the worms by putting them in a bag.

Sitting there in the middle of what seemed to be a break, Grandpa explained everything about these worms and how they were prepared, although later Grandma and her daughters were the ones who cooked them.

Grandfather proceeded to remove their entrails and wash them with river water so that once they were ready they could be taken to the churuata.

Grandma's smile was huge when she saw this succulent delicacy. I particularly love Grandma's smile, it fills my heart with beautiful things and it seems to me the purest smile I have ever seen, this smile is also on her last granddaughter "Jattupajü".

Grandmother gave the caterpillars a second wash and began to prepare with corn, a preparation like for cachapas, which consisted of grinding fresh corn, making a batter mix.

Once the mixture was ready, she added the worms and put them in a pan to fry.

This looks like one of my recipes LOL

I was amazed at all this preparation but even though I was offered it, I only tried one piece because having seen them before did not help my brain process and accept the worms as part of my diet and the truth is my drama was more than what actually resulted from that dish.

It didn't taste bad, it actually tasted better than the corn they put in it, and that was "really good".

One of the things I heard Grandpa say was that a handful of these worms with mañoco gave your body the nutritional content it needed for a day.

You probably won't see me eating them, but I thought it would be fun to share this experience with you, taking advantage of the fact that there is an interesting dynamic of wild foods in @naturalmedicine.

I would have loved to have more pictures and the name of the worms, but my memory is not that good, and their language is complex so remembering is more difficult. I promise that on my next trip I will document everything I missed and more, maybe I can bring you more information about these typical dishes.

For now this is all, I thank all those who take the time to read all the little things that I sow here.

This post made me SMILE! LOL yes - wild edibles in many countries are not just pretty dandelions in country lanes. Here in Thailand to it is worms, snakes, spiders and lord knows what. LOL 🤣 Lovely entry to the challenge!

my drama was more than what actually resulted from that dish.

Gross, yet fascinating. 😅

The nutrition level of bugs and the fact that they are more eco-friendly has been something I've seen talked about much more seriously lately. I'm trying to be open minded about it, but I have a particular aversion to caterpillars and grubs, so those ones are particularly hard for me to envision stomaching. I guess if it was ready prepared in a way I didn't recognise it, then I might be able to manage.

Hahaha it's not easy, just thinking that way I tried just a little bit, my mind wasn't ready to try bugs!

But for the Wottuja it's a very common and tasty food, just like the monkey spiders or whatever they're called in English

Hi! I read this post earlier, and then I forgot to comment. These caterpillars are big, my gosh, never saw them that huge. I know in Europe these caterpillars have been an issue for the environment and health if they decide to have a nest in a tree near people's house. Probabaly not the same ones, but I can't even imagine eating them :)

Thanks for sharing though, lovely post!
