Gardening Report

As I said before, it's not only gardening season, but also harvesting season, the best season of the year if you ask me. This weekend was pretty tough, we had a lot of work, from morning till late evening, I haven't even had time to post. Today is a new day and I made some time to show you some photos of the garden I took on Saturday.

IMG_20210710_093408a.jpg

Tomatoes

Let's start with the queen of the garden! Tomatooooes! Who doesnt' love tomatoes!? I certainly do, can't live without them.

IMG_20210710_093355a.jpg

The size of the tomatoes are good, although some growing is still needed, but they are still green. One month I'd say and we get some nicely ripe tomatoes.

IMG_20210710_094351a.jpg

As I have mentioned before, we always have a few types, usually four or five. The first two photos are of the same type. This striped one is a new entry, actually we have no idea what type it is. The neighbor guy gave us some seeds at the beginning of the season, so we haven't seen the tomatoes yet, but so far so good, the tomatoes are looking good.

IMG_20210710_093558a.jpg

IMG_20210710_093344a.jpg

This is all tomato and it's not all as there's another one, half as big as this one, but those are on the ground.

IMG_20210710_093536a.jpg

Cucumbers

Cucumbers are ready to harvest already. The good thing about cucumbers is that the harvest period is two months, maybe three, so we have these little cuties constantly.

IMG_20210710_093548a.jpg

This is the longer one and actually it should be straight but it isn't. My dad told me not to take a photo of this one as it's not nice, but I strongly disagree. This is not a beauty or popularity contest, these are vegetables, so who cares if they are not perfect.

IMG_20210710_093620a.jpg

This is the small one, for pickles.

IMG_20210710_093656a.jpg

IMG_20210710_093645a.jpg

IMG_20210710_093730a.jpg

This is the one for salad. I put my hand next to it so you can have some clue how long one is, but this is not even the longest one.

IMG_20210709_103150a.jpg

IMG_20210710_093838a.jpg

This is the second lot of seedlings. The first one was damaged by snails pretty badly, so we needed some more. I bought seeds, lucky me I got some, even though it was already late as the seedling season was long over. Now these are growing nicely.

IMG_20210709_151844a.jpg

Pickles, with vinegar and horseradish.

IMG_20210710_093328a.jpg

Peppers

Peppers are still very small, but growing.

IMG_20210710_093820a.jpg

IMG_20210710_093314a.jpg

IMG_20210710_093450a.jpg

Squash

These are already ready to harvest and are not the only type. These are round and about the size of a football. Quite unusual, but rather delicious.

IMG_20210710_094054a.jpg

This is the other type, perfect for pottage.

IMG_20210710_093515a.jpg

Green Beans

The round type, my favorite. These are ready to be harvested.

IMG_20210710_093939a.jpg

Green beans, also the round type but this time it's dark green. It looks great, healthy, but I think next year I'm going to opt only for the light, yellow one as this is not as soft as the other one. The yellow type is easier to cook and more easier to digest. I don't really like this as the cooking time is longer.

IMG_20210710_093802a.jpg

Onions

These are next, we must harvest all as it's time. The more rain, the more danger for them, so next week I think it's going to be onion harvesting time. We don't have much this year, just as much as we need and learning from previous year's mistake, we are not going to store these for winter, rather eat all we can as there's a danger of rotting. Better use it now.

IMG_20210710_093906a.jpg

Celery

The celery is not fussy, growing nicely. We use both the green and the underground part and it looks like we're going to have plenty.

IMG_20210710_093945a.jpg

Beetroots

Last year we had a record harvest, which is rare as usually we get just a few. This year is not any better as we've got like six or eight, not more. I believe the soil is not suitable for growing beetroots. We still have some pickled ones from last year though.

IMG_20210710_094016a.jpg

Honeydew

I'm not sure if this is going to be green or yellow, when fully ripe, but the color counts less, the taste is the most important. I still have to wait a month to be able to enjoy it.

IMG_20210710_094028a.jpg

Cauliflower

This is a mystery for me and my dad as well. We've been struggling to grow cauliflower for years and all we got was big leaves each year and that's all. Therefore we tried with different types, hoping one may be suitable for this type of soil, but all in vain. Last year we got some seeds from the neighbor guy and were very good.

IMG_20210710_094140a.jpg

This year we bought some seeds and voila! Looks like these seeds are good as well as the little cauliflowers are growing nicely. We want to make some pickles and also good for vegetable soup. Obviously I have a bunch of cauliflower recipes but we don't have enough for everything, so I'm going to buy some and keep these for pickles.

IMG_20210710_094215a.jpg

Running Beans

These need a little time, one week maybe as are still green and need to turn yellow in order to be fully ripe. But there will be over 35C temperatures this week, so it's not going to be a problem.

Hokkaido Squash Or Red Kury Squash

This is a new entry as we've never had it before, so it's a surprise. You can read more about the use of it here. It's widely used though.

This is how things looked like in our garden on Saturday, 10th of July. If you liked my gardening report, please check back tomorrow to show you what's happened.

Thanks for reading my post.

Thank you, unfortunately there has been an unfortunate event I wrote about in my post today, that may affect the garden.

Amazing farm product. It cool to have things like this in farm.

I have really learn one or two things from the little write up. And i really wish to be a farmer as well.

For the love of God, your harvests look so damn amazing. Love at first sight it is. Growing your food is like growing your wealth. Too good.

Yes, indeed but you never know what's going to happen, maybe next year we won't have any, so it's never too much.

Wow - everything is going well. Me and @owasco are jealous of your cucumber pickle, aren't we @owasco?

I'm jealous of the whole garden! Now that I have nothing but crowded tomatoes left...

Sorry to hear about you only having tomatoes left. Don't be jealous as the garden is not looking so great anymore, I wrote about it today.

Whoa look at that harvest! Everything looks so big, full and healthy! We just started seeing our little green tomatoes growing in and are really excited about that. We haven’t had the best go around this first year of gardening but I’m thankful for everything we were able to enjoy.

Congratulations on such a wonderful harvest, you’ve worked hard for it and now you get to enjoy ~ 😊

I'm sorry you're not satisfied with the garden. Gardening is like the lottery, you get good years and bad years.

Check out the post I posted today to see what I mean.

Yes, I’m learning that now. It started off as a great year but now we only have a few things left to enjoy.

Okay, I’ll check it out. 👌🏽

Yes, it is unfortunately, but I think we're still lucky, it could have been worse.

Gorgeous!!! You're killing me with those cucumbers. I got a dozen and that was that. Now I have nothing but a lot of tomatoes and I, unlike you, don't really eat them.

Question: how do you determine which tomatoes to stake and which to allow to grow on the ground?

Thank you for the lovely walk through your garden!!!

Lol. Last year we got 4 🥒 cucumbers. 4! We started late as there was the lockdown and we got stuck in the city. Then the snails ate the seedlings and then it was too late.

I know two types of tomato 🍅 that grows on the ground. One is the Italian San Marzano, which is a famous one, we always have some as are good for sauce. The other is the Kecskeméti Jubileum,
https://www.kertabc.hu/zoldsegmagok/paradicsom/paradicsom-kecskemeti-jubileum-detail

This one is a Hungarian type, we're buying seeds from Hungary.

Thank you for the lovely comment. Unfortunately there has been hailing and the garden got hit. I wrote about it today.

This is wonderful Erikah.... it is amazing how your veggies are growing! I can only dream of your place... I only do container garden and my tomatoes are doing good, they feel good in containers... That is the way I used to grow , in containers and upstairs, sometimes on our roof where the slugs couldn´t reach and attack my veggies
... hahaha
