English: Holy basil, or tulasi

Bangla name : tulasi,

Scientific name: Ocimum Sanctum

Holy basilis/tulasi a medicinal plant. Tulsi means incomparable. The basil plant is a fragrant plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family. It is revered by the Hindu community as a sacred plant. In the Brahmakaivartapurana, Tulsi is called 'Sitasvarupa', in the Skandapurana 'Lakshisvarupa', in the Charkasanghita it is called 'Vishnupriya', in the Rikveda it is called 'Kalyani'.

Binomial nomenclature: Ocimum tenuiflorum

Description of basil tree,

Basil is an evergreen shrub 2/3 feet tall with dense branches. The main stem is woody, the leaves are 2-4 inches long. The petals are grooved, 5 peduncles protrude from the apex of the branch and there are 10-20 umbrella-shaped flowers around each peduncle. 7 small flowers bloom at each level. Its leaves, flowers and fruits have a pungent odor.

It is found almost everywhere in Bangladesh and India. It is more common in Hindu houses and is used in worship. It is cultivated commercially in India. The buds appear in July-August or November-December. They can be seen growing from the plains to the foothills of the Himalayas at an altitude of about 6,000 feet.

There is no harm in eating a little basil leaves during pregnancy or breastfeeding, but eating extra basil leaves can cause various complications. So it is better not to eat basil leaves at this time. In addition, excess basil leaves can cause infertility in women. So it is better to use a certain amount.

Bleeding problems

Excessive increase in blood flow to the body by eating extra basil leaves destroys the normal blood clotting tendency of the body. This can lead to excessive bleeding (28). Avoid basil leaves at that time, especially if you have any surgery or cut. In addition, you should stop eating basil leaves even two weeks before the surgery.

Low blood pressure

Excess potassium in basil leaves can lower blood pressure (28). So if you have low blood pressure, it is better not to eat basil leaves.
