๐Ÿšดโ€โ™‚๏ธ Cycling, Foraging and Shopping With @Sreypov ๐ŸŒฟ Paramaribo, Suriname

โ–ถ๏ธ Watch on 3Speak

@Sreypov and I rode bicycles across Paramaribo recently, and along the way we foraged some grape leaves and tamarind. My apologies for some of the wind noise...I was struggling to film, ride, and manage the heavy load on my front rack.

Keep Your Eyes Open...

ย  ย  ย We've learned after living here for two years that the overwhelming majority of Surinamers refuse to pick their fruits, and opt to let them fall on the ground and rot where they lie. Whenever we make trips by bicycle, we always keep our eyes open for noni, cassava leaf, pumpkin flowers, grape leaves, coconuts and many more things people in this country don't seem to be interested in eating.

If No One's Watching...

ย  ย  ย After asking a few neighbors if we could pick some fruit to prevent unnecessary waste, we discovered they always want us to pay market prices. So, if no one's looking, then it's a free gift from the most HIGH to our family. I hate to admit we have zero empathy for families with houses and cars and the ability to let food go to waste, so we really don't feel it's stealing, especially when we are being kept in this country against our will.

The Struggle Is Real...

ย  ย  ย The traffic of this country is largely car-based, with an odd motorbike here and there, and even fewer bicycles. Almost no one walks anywhere, and people don't run hustles in front of their house like they do in Southeast Asia, so social interactions outside the home are very limited and usually only happen with the exchange of money. It really does feel like we are in an "us against them" struggle here in Suriname, and this place has yet to understand meekness is not weakness.

Yes, it was a rough day but were both very fortunate to find a tamarind tree with a few fruits. !ENGAGE 10

Impressive how you speak the language

I still cringe to this day when I hear myself speaking Khmer, and that certainly makes video editing a bit tough. Even though I've been teaching it for over 6 years and speaking it for 11 years, I still don't find the Khmer language pleasant to listen to, but I do love Cambodian people, so knowing the language is a must.

So far no issues, but I have to think we are protected by higher forces when preventing mother nature's gifts from going to waste. !ENGAGE 10

The bikes here are certainly high quality, all used Dutch imports, although new and cheaper Chinese bikes are definitely coming into the country. Now if only I could speak proper Dutch instead of mixing English, Dutch, and Sranang, and Spanish to make myself understood.

We get the sense people are really proud of their private property regardless of whether or not they make use of the land they have. We realize people like to keep their distance here, and social living is not part of the culture here. This does however make public fruitpicking a little easier because there are less eyes.

Thanks for stopping by.

Of course you'd notice that. It's labeled as a National Postal Delivery Bike, but I'm not sure if that's true or not because it didn't have the wear and tear I'd expect from a postal delivery bike. Dutch bikes cost several thousand dollars in the USA, but here in Suriname we can get second-hand Dutch bikes for $100 to $200, really good prices in my opinion. !ENGAGE10

The price is good. I know we had postal
Bikes , Had ! So I think itโ€™s true nowadays they have electric ones or mopeds , and about that Dutch why not install duo Lingo and mix in as many Dutch words as you can? That will help and makes it easier to transfer to more Dutch because Surinaams has many Dutch words

We are getting braver and braver with our coconut thievery, although it's hard to consider it thievery when they're going to waste. I'd gladly pay for a cold coconut here, but almost no one sells them. !ENGAGE 10

It is a sad thing people are not willing to give food away for free if they intend to let it rot away on ground. You have a beautiful way to collect some of your own food. Keep on going sustainable!

I like that word "collect," and I feel that is the most appropriate term for what we do. It's hard to view it as stealing because the very people letting the fruits rot don't bother us if we pick it without asking. It's only when we attempt good manners by going through motion of asking first that they try and profit financially from the situation.

I would be more willing to entertain paying the locals a little money if they didn't ask for market prices. There definitely should be a discount when you have to harvest it yourself. The world is upside down I guess...
