Vitamin-D 🌞 New Friends 🀝 & Immune System Boosts 🦠 Paramaribo, Suriname

avatar
(Edited)

With all the lockdown measures in Suriname, the @KidSisters haven't had much chance to hang out with other kids outdoors, and thereby fortify their immune systems and get some much-needed Vitamin D.

We've now been in Paramaribo for over a year, and haven't made any close friends, and more importantly close friends with children of a similar age to the @KidSisters, so a surprise visit from random neighborhood kids was warmly received.

Vitamin-D πŸŒžβœ… Immune System Boost πŸ¦ βœ… Friends πŸ€βœ…

CORONA BLUES 🦠

Β  Β  Β SreyYuu and Monkey-B have been out of Suriname public school for months, and due to the economic struggle we are in, we have rarely gone anywhere beyond the market for about a year.

Β  Β  Β The girls' immune systems were much stronger in Cambodia, where went to the wet markets daily and interacted with random people from all over the world at our in-home restaurant.

Β  Β  Β Finally, after far too long, the girls have made some neighborhood friends, and I can't express how happy I am to see the girls acting like normal kids again, getting sunburned, playing with sand and getting doses of microbes to help build their immune systems up again

BABYSITTER SURPRISE 😲

Β  Β  Β Our next-door randomly stopped by to meet our landlord, but happened to bring a welcome surprise of four other local neighborhood children with her.

Β  Β  Β Sakana and SreyYuu's eyes lit up as the potential playmates entered the front gate. I have to admit I may have been happier than the girls for this surprise, because I know how much they have been longing for some playmates.

NEW FRIENDS RELEASE DOPAMINE πŸ’‰

Β  Β  Β Monkey-B and SreyYuu were noticeably high as a kite on dopamine from their new friendships with "Anna and "Michiel." @Sreypov decided Anna could use some of Sakana's old clothes, as she is a little smaller.

Β  Β  Β Monkey-B wasn't initially very stoked on the idea of handing over her undersized clothing to a new friend, but now all regrets have passed.

VITAMIN-D FOR ALL πŸ’ŠπŸŒ€οΈ

Β  Β  Β Vitamin-D is such an overlooked important part of a healthy immune system. Luckily we can create it ourselves with some sun exposure. It's always better to not get sick than to use natural cures once you are already stricken with an illness.

Β  Β  Β In this COVID-19 world, the mass media hasn't mentioned much about the importance of maintaining a healthy immune system.

Β  Β  Β We realize having been isolated for so many months, we need to slowly re-strengthen our immune systems, and this visit from the neighborhood kids provided some much needed microbes and a reason for the @KidSisters to go out and charge up the Vitamin-D reserves.

SATISFIED PARENTS πŸ‘«

Β  Β  Β I can't explain in words how happy it made to see our children playing with friends. It has been far too long, nearly a year and half since they've had any close bonds with peers.

Β  Β  Β This makes me one happy parent, and that supplies me with a little bit of dopamine of my own to get high on.

That was wonderful, indeed, for your neighbor to visit and bring children for your daughters to play with! Looks like they are having a marvelous time together! 😊

Eating my words already, the local kids have destroyed all of our landlord's flowers. I forget how little guidance many parents give their children in this world.

We would never have to specifically mention to Cambodian playmates not to cut all the landlord's flowers. Now we're gonna have to manage all these local kids as if they were 4 years old. Either way some fun was had, and we have that to reflect upon.

A heart-warming post. Why not start a weekly kids open lunchtime? You'll be surprised how much kids like eating out? And it gets to be a habit when they start coming to your house. Making the effort to go and make friends is a big one.

Funny you say that @artemislives, the locals here in Suriname look at our food and take a hard pass. This country is hooked on high-sugar sodas, fast food and packaged goods. We've already tried to feed local kids, but the only success I ever had was with my samosas at the public school.

Although I must say even most Suriname adults are more picky eaters than our kids. I guess we should feel thankful for that. Our neighbor boy invited Sakana to go with her in his Mom's car to McDonald's yesterday, and Sakana told him she didn't know what McDonald's was, and it made this Dad smile.

So sweet. Its one of the dilemmas of this crisis... we need healthy immune systems to steel ourselves against possibly dangerous viruses but the practices that people use to do that are bad for immune system! How do we support a healthy biome if we wear masks, constantly sanitize, divude ourselves from nature and hide indoors??? Feeling the joy of your post xx

It's such conundrum, I imagine wandering the streets begging for a stranger to touch our hands so we can build back our biomes. I think this isn't a too far-off dystopian vision. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Wow! I feel your happiness radiating to us! I feel the same!!! I am happy that my son has playmates in the neighborhood. He is one and only kid, with no cousins, so he plays by himself most of the time. But some neighbors have been friends with him recently during this lockdown, so I am happy about it!

I love how you connect playtime with vitamins and microbes, I have never thought about it. I only thought of the emotional balance it brings to kids. Thank you for bringing that up. That is sooooo true!

Thank you for sharing all these. I also feel the happiness of your post @justineparke. 😊

Kind words @gingbabida, thank you very much.

There are many more reasons why we are glad to see kids playing again, but what you’ve mentioned are the core things.

Everybody needs a peer from time to time. I am a cool Dad but not cool enough to be a replacement for friends.

That's great! This virus situation is difficult for everyone but it must be a nightmare for kids. They should be out there playing with their friends, not locked inside fearing a virus. πŸ™„

We feel blessed to have found some like-minded non-helicopter parents across the street. We are so happy to see our children playing with dirt and touching other kids' hands.

I can imagine. Life for the kids during Covid has been really hard.

Too true, hopefully they will forgive us adults one day for all this corona hardship we have put them through.

This is wonderful! Glad the kids had a great time playing together. Vitamin D is really important to boost our immune system, how ironic though that even though it is practically free, most people are still Vit D deficient (especially here in the UAE, a desert country of all places!).

Yes, it's funny with all the information about measures on how to prevent the contraction of COVID-19 with PPE, there has been little mention of how to prevent contraction by maintaining a strong and healthy immune system.

Trapping ourselves indoors deprives us of Vitamin-D, and not interacting with others on a daily basis weakens our immune system. The lockdown measures do much to weaken our health, how bizarre.

strangely the media only focuses on fear mongering news instead actually educating the mass on how to get healthier and have a strong immune system. I am someone who consume a lot of vitamins and minerals along with nootropics. My friend told me, " if you got corona, there would be no chance for everyone else" as she considers I am quite obsessive with my vitamin intake. But when it comes to immune system, vitamin D alone won't be enough, good sleep is a must too :). Cheers.

So true, I wish good a night's sleep was as easy to get as some Vitamin-D. With two kids and a one-room house, a good night's sleep is a rare thing.

I think this is one of the reasons Suriname eased lockdown restrictions. The president said there was more damage being done to the mental health of poor families in small homes than by corona, so we are thankful for that.

I am so happy for you and your girls - the socializing and getting out in the sunshine is so important for their health and development.

I'm having a similar situation where my niece and her family are moving up here and they will have new little friends just down the road who are stoked to have someone their age move into the neighborhood.

They are city kids and spend far to much time inside so it will be good to have them here in the country being out in the fresh air and sunshine ( although they will have to learn to cope with the bugs here until the frosts come in September!)

Thanks for sharing - so good to see you all so happy!

Thanks @porters.

Yeah, it's good to see kids playing in an old-school way if we can call it that. There was a long power cut today, and the kids began reading books, something they don't do often.

There are already too many things making youngsters spend too much time indoors these days. A lockdown just provides justification for wanting to stare at a screen at all day, although I don't allow such excuses.
