Living out here on the homestead means prepping is required. The nearest town to me is 20 miles away and it's a small one! Not only have but have you read all of those wacky news headlines lately on food shortages and even going to the store and finding empty shelves yourself?

Well let me help you build your own food storage. My goal is to have a years worth of food on hand to thrive and so far it’s going rather well. I’m proud of all that I’ve accomplished in just the few short months out here on the homestead and want to thank all of you for coming with me on this adventure.

Types Of Food Storage

Layering food storage is important to creating your stocks that will help you get through the toughest of times.

You’ll most likely have three levels…
0-3 months
3-12 months
1-30 years

Your 0-3 months would be your easy to access pantry which you keep replenished from oldest first of your 3-12 storage.

3-12 months is storage that is easy to access and starts to get into bulk storage with gamma lids. These are the storages you’ll cycle through from your long term supplies of 1-30 years.

Gamma lids make perfect for any type of storage but mainly center around your 1-30 year storage plans. However in the case of the sugar I just bought this gamma bucket will be going in my 0-3 month 3-12 moth pantry for easy access. The reason being I bake a lot of breads and my own foods which require sugar in the recipes. Having a large amount with easy access is essential to doing meal preps for the week.

Gamma lids act as a way to give your foods an airtight storage solution that helps improve the shelf life for whatever is stored inside.

I hope these tips for bulk food storage help you on your own journey to becoming self sufficient or better prepared.

They fit on almost all 5 gallon buckets but they come in various sizes such as 2, 3.5, 5,6 and 7 plastic buckets. Just be sure to get food grade on the 5 gallon buckets if you plan on storing food directly in it like I did.
