Whatcha gon
Whatcha gon do with that dessert?

This lyrics played in my head as I saw zord189's next food theme for the Hive Creative Contest in collaboration with the Foodies Bee Hive community.

"Hive Creative Contest | Ultimate Dessert(Contest Details)"

When it comes to the dessert category, I don't think I have a wide option of foods to choose from since we rarely make dessert. We usually just purchase it. I wanted to share about making leche flan but I already made a post about it last year.

"Made Leche Flan (Caramel Pudding) Because I Miss It!"

But no worries! I still got one great dessert I can share and it's super easy to make! What is it? It's the..

POLVORON

Crumbly, sweet, and delicate are the words to describe the Filipino sweet treat polvoron. This favorite Filipino dessert trace its origin from Spain, polvorones. We really do have a lot of foods influenced by Spain.

Polvoron has four main ingredients: flour, sugar, milk, and butter. They are shaped into little oblong shapes and wrapped with a colored cellophane or Japanese paper (papel de hapon). Just a short story before I proceed with the recipe. When I was little, I really feel excited eating polvoron especially when I see the colorful wrappers. The wrappers make polvoron more enticing for me!

There are various polvoron flavors available in the market. I'm trying to remember what's the best flavor I've tasted. Hmmm. I think it's the cashew flavor because it has crushed cashews and I love cashews. :)

This polvoron recipe I am sharing with you was something I made a few years ago. The idea of making polvoron began when I accompanied a friend to a baking store to buy some ingredients and materials. Since we've recently attended a bread and pastry short course that time, I also got interested on the items at the store. Until I saw a polvoron molder. It only costs about half a dollar so I bought it.

I based my polvoron from a recipe I found on Youtube but I can no longer find it and I've already forgotten the exact measurements so I rather not try and guess the measurements. I'll just state the ingredients and explain the process. :)

For my polvoron, I made three flavors: Matcha, Nuts, and Original Flavor

INGREDIENTS

♥ Flour
♥ Powdered Milk
♥ Sugar
♥ Butter
♥ Matcha Powder
♥ Crushed Nuts

Butter not included on the photo.

PROCEDURE

#1 In a pot or wok, toast the flour until it gets a slightly brown color. This may take a while though stir the flour constantly so the flour gets toasted evenly.

#2 Turn off the stove and add powdered milk and sugar. Mix until the ingredients are mixed thoroughly.

#3 Add a slightly melted butter and mix evenly. The butter makes the powder mixture bind together so it can hold its shape when molded. And of course, it also adds a delicious taste!

ORIGINAL, NUT, & MATCHA FLAVOR

The procedure above is already the recipe for the original flavor. To make three flavors out of it, divide the polvoron powder mixture into three by separating them into different bowls. One of them no longer needs to have other ingredients added since it's the original flavor.

For the nut flavor, mix in the crushed nuts on one of the bowls. That's it. 😂

And for the matcha flavor, add the matcha powder on the third bowl and mix well. I didn't have an exact measurement for the matcha powder. If you only want a faint taste of matcha then add only little.

Congrats! Now you have three variations of polvoron! Isn't it easy? You can actually add whatever flavor you wish!

WRAPPING

P_20171125_181444_2.jpg

Polvoron wouldn't be complete without molding into a perfect oblong/circle shape and its wrapping, of course! Like I've mentioned earlier, there is molder for polvoron and costs cheap. To use it, you just to flip the molder and fill it with the polvoron mixture to the brim. Make sure to compress the polvoron mixture.

Flip the molder while hovering it on the wrapper. Push down the button on top of the molder to push the polvoron out.

Wrapping the polvoron is necessary if you want to store them. The material I used for wrapping here is the Japanese paper. If I'm not mistaken I cut the size into 6x6 inches. Put the polvoron at the center

Tadah!

Note:
Wrap with light hands only and as delicate as possible. Do not wrap with heavy pressure or you'll smash and powderize the polvoron even before you get to eat it. 😂

Here's a video on how to properly wrap the polvoron.

Polvoron is a delicate and fragile food so handle them with extra care when storing or opening, and especially when eating. Hold it lightly, just enough to hold it. I've seen a couple of foreigners pulverizing the polvoron the moment they try to unwrap it and moreso when they pick it up to take a bite. They often get surprised when they bring it up and it crumbles in their fingers.

Matcha polvoron!

For the recipe with exact measurements, you may want to check this video. It claims that its recipe is similar to the Goldilocks polvoron based from its title.

(Goldilocks is a huge baking store in my country and one of their popular products is the polvoron. This is where most people buy when they want to send some polvoron their loved ones residing abroad. :))

Polvoron is the only the recipe that I made successfully, FYI. I'm proud of it. Lol. Polvoron doesn't spoil quickly so you can store for a couple of weeks or maybe a few months. Just make sure you store it somewhere ants can't reach. Though I doubt you can resist not consuming it in a week or a few days.

Would you try making this easy sweet Filipino treat?

Looking at the ingredient it reminds me of a dessert that I had once as a kid- I just couldn't name it. Maybe I can try making polvoron and see if my mom and grandma can recognize it.
