The Devil and Daniel Johnston - A musical biography
Today I'm going to talk about a musician who, despite having subliminally marked the world of music through the influences he left for an entire generation, is practically unknown to the general public. But, after all, that's not a problem, because Daniel isn't a big audience musician. Daniel is like refining a precious substance, that can only be appreciated with a certain level of sensitivity. At least, with a sensibility similar to that of the musician himself, who gave his life to his art. Today I'm going to talk about the movie "The Devil and Daniel Johnston", a documentary that opens up the soul and flesh of this incredible composer.

Daniel was a simple McDonnalds attendant until he was discovered by some K7 tape recordings he had been making over... Your whole life! Daniel clearly had serious social difficulties and some level of autism little understandable in his youth, and faced with numerous episodes of depressive crises he ended up triggering a schizophrenic and psychotic condition that followed him throughout the rest of his life, and consecutively, throughout his chaotic and fickle career that ranged from forced ostracism in the face of his crises to moments of brilliance and genius where he not only produced great compositions but also brought them to the public in visceral and unique presentations. But what kind of music did Daniel play?

That's a difficult answer, and I think for that I'm going to need to leave a song here for you, to understand the level of rawness and richness in your songs. what is perceived, regardless of the stage and the quality of the track (the vast majority of his classic works were recorded in his bedroom with a homemade tape recorder) is that Daniel Johnston puts all his soul explicit in the songs, building them as a musical diary of pain and insecurity , doubts, fear, energy, love and sadness.
It turned out that Daniel was too unique not to be discovered , and in a short time captivated the underground scene, directly influencing big bands like Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, Beck, Wilco, Sun Kil Moon, and several others. His music was then spread across pop culture, whether on a Kurt Cobain t-shirt, on Gus Van Sant's Kids soundtrack or indirectly on so many musical influences or even covers that several artists made of their most powerful tracks. The documentary is great at demonstrating its full potential, from his childhood to his meteoric rise which even helped him to plummet into the great and empty of schizophrenia, it even shows that,
tragically, things took a really heavy turn when Daniel, lost in love with a young woman he knew and was nice to him, ended up having his heart broken when he discovered that it would never become a relationship. As much pain as possible was channeled into his incredible art that fills both his album covers and paintings, and also into his increasingly inspiring and heartbreaking music. It is tragic to literally see such an emotional pain as explicitly as Daniel is able to do. Anyway, now follows the trailer of the movie so they can get an idea of what awaits them. Hoje vou falar sobre um músico que apesar de ter marcado subliminarmente o mundo da música através das influências que deixou para uma geração inteira, praticamente é um desconhecido do grande público. Mas, afinal de contas isso não é um problema, por que Daniel não é um músico de grande público. Daniel é como o refino de uma substância preciosa, que só pode ser apreciada com determinado nível de sensibilidade. Ao menos, numa sensibilidade semelhante ao do próprio músico, que deu sua vida para sua arte. Hoje vou falar do filme "The Devil and Daniel Johnston", documentário que abre a alma e a carne desse incrível compositor.

E quem é afinal de contas Daniel Johnston?
Daniel era um simples atendente de McDonnalds até ser descoberto por algumas gravações em fita K7 que vinha fazendo ao longo de... Sua vida toda! Nitidamente Daniel tinha graves dificuldades sociais e algum nível de autismo pouco compreensível em sua juventude, e diante de inúmeros episódios de crises depressivas acabou desencadeando um quadro esquizofrênico e psicótico que lhe acompanhou por todo o resto de sua vida, e consecutivamente, por toda a sua carreira caótica e inconstante que variava do ostracismo forçado diante de suas crises a momentos de brilho e genialidade onde não apenas produzia grandes composições como também as levava ao público em apresentações viscerais e únicas. Mas que tipo de música Daniel tocava?

Bem... Essa é uma resposta difícil, e acho que para isso eu vou precisar deixar uma música aqui para vocês, para compreenderem o nível de crueza e riqueza em suas canções. O que se percebe, indiferente da fase e da qualidade da faixa (a grande maioria de suas obras clássicas foram gravadas em seu quarto com um gravador caseiro mesmo) é que Daniel Johnston coloca toda sua alma explicitada nas canções, construindo-as como um diário musical de dor e insegurança, de dúvidas, de medo, de energia, de amor e de tristeza.

Aconteceu que Daniel era único demais para não ser descoberto, e em pouco tempo cativou a cena underground, influenciando diretamente grandes bandas como Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, Beck, Wilco, Sun kil Moon, e vários outros. Sua música estava então espalhada pela cultura pop, seja em uma camiseta de Kurt Cobain, seja na trilha sonora de Kids de Gus Van Sant ou seja indiretamente em tantas influências musicais ou mesmo covers que vários artistas fizeram de suas faixas mais poderosas. O documentário é ótimo em demonstrar todo esse seu potencial, desde de sua infância até sua ascensão meteórica que inclusive lhe ajudou a despencar no grande e vazio da esquizofrenia, inclusive mostra que, tragicamente as coisas tomaram um rumo realmente pesado quando Daniel perdido de paixão por uma jovem que conhecia e era simpática com ele acabou tendo seu coração partido ao descobrir que aquilo jamais se tornaria um relacionamento. Toda a dor possível foi canalizada para sua arte incrível que preenche tanto suas capas de álbuns quanto seus quadros, e também para sua música, cada vez mais inspirada e dolorosa. É trágico literalmente ver tamanha explicitude de uma dor emocional como Daniel é capaz de fazer. Enfim, segue agora o trailer do filme para que possam ter uma ideia do que os aguardará. I have heard a little about Daniel Johnston some years ago,but i never knew much information about him until today..
