  • Step 1: What is a verb?
In a given sentence, the verb is the most important word because it expresses the action in the sentence. E. G "dance", "sing", "fight", "kill", "ask", "bake", "sleep", "sweep". All these words stand for actions. They are known as lexical verbs.

Exampes:

  • I "have read" the book.
  • Jide "danced" yesterday.
  • Step 2: Classifications of verbs:
  1. Transitive and Intransitive verbs

*A transitive verb takes an object in the sentence.

Examples:

  • I "saw" my father last week.
  • I "baked" a cake yesterday.
The verbs "baked" and "saw" are transitively used because of their objects; "a cake" and "my father".

*An Intransitive verb takes no object.

Examples:

  • We "work" tirelessly.
  • Babies "cry" a lot.
The verbs "cry", and "work" have no object and are therefore Intransitive.
  1. Finite and Non-finite Verbs

*A finite verb is so called because it is limited to a subject with which it agrees in tense and number.

Examples:

  • I "am cooking" rice now.
  • I "cook" rice often.
  • We "cooked" rice yesterday.
  • She "cooks" rice often.
The verbs of the different sentences above are all finite.

*A non-finite verb is that which does not have a full verb stature, and so cannot convey a meaning in a sentence.

Examples:

  • "to steal", "stealing", "stolen".
We cannot say "I to steal" or "I stealing". To convey the right meaning, the verb must be in a particular tense. However, two of these - "stealing" and "stolen" can be helped by auxiliary verbs to become finite.

Examples:

  • She "(has) stolen" my book.
  • She "(is) stealing" your pen.
The third "to steal" can only function either as the subject or complement in a sentence.

Example:

  • She began "to steal" her friends belongings when the latter travelled to her village. (complement)
  • "to steal" is not good. (subject)

To be continued.....
