Agnes the ant - An original short story for children

Once upon a time in a land far away, there lived many animals. They were all good friends and they played together in harmony. Elephant and Beaver were best friends, and they could play for hours in the water down at the waterhole.

Monkey and Skunkie used to play tricks on everybody and they were the funniest pair of friends. On weekends they all came together and played hide and seek. Ally the alligator used to hide in the water and they always found her in the same place.

Telly the turtle was the most difficult to find. He usually hid between a few rocks and was hard to see because he camouflaged himself. Melly the giraffe, usually found everyone hiding in the top of the trees, because she had such a long neck.

One day while they were playing, something terrible happened. Beavie the beaver decided to climb up high to the top of the tree. This was not the usual place that he would hide, but he was sure no one would find him there. He climbed and climbed until he was so high up, that even Melly the giraffe could not see him. He sat there for hours. In the beginning it was quite fun, because he could see places he could never see before. He could even see everyone looking for him, and he even heard them call his name a few times.

It was now getting dark, and Beavie was getting scared. It was clear that no one could find him. He tried to climb down, but he was stuck. He was too scared to let go and he just sat there.....on the highest branch of the tree.

He felt like crying, but he knew that it wouldn't help. He managed to find a safe branch to cling to, and he felt a bit safer. If he was to spend the night in the tree, at least he would be safe, but he was very hungry and thirsty and scared. He could no longer see anyone looking for him and he became terrified.

Beavie started crying and all he wanted was to get out of this tree, and back into the river where he belonged. His parents were absolutely frantic when he did not show up at home, and they immediately called the other parents to start searching. Everyone searched high and low, but it was very late, and no one could find poor Beavie. Elly the elephant could not stop crying.

She had lost her best friend and she did not know what to do. How can someone just vanish into thin air? It was nearly morning and no one found Beavie yet. She knew they had to find him, and was determined to do so. Elly called all of her friends together, and they worked out a route for the search party. It was not long before everyone knew exactly what to do and off they went. Trudy the Toucan flew from tree to tree as she had the best view.

Trudy found Beavie hanging on for his dear life on the highest branch of the highest tree. Beavie was still clinging for his life, but he was very excited to be found. When Trudy informed them where he was, all the animals grouped together under the tree, and shouted and motivated Beavie to climb down.

Beavie was too scared and Elly sent monkey up with a little bit of water for Beavie to drink. They knew they had to come up with a plan to get him down. Agnes the ant was watching the spectacle for a while, and after listening to all their ideas, she interrupted them and told them the following story:

"Ants are small, but if we work together, we get more done. It is the nature of ants to work as a group and to help each other where we can. Many hands, make light work."

Agnes suggested that they build a tower for Beavie to climb down. Elly was the strongest so she would stand at the bottom. Then Melly would climb on top of her, as she has the tallest neck. That would give Monkey a chance to climb up with Silly the snake. Once they got to the top, Monkey could tie Beavie to himself with the help of Silly the snake. If Beavie was tied to Monkey, there were less chance that Beavie would fall.

It was a brilliant plan, and in a matter of minutes, Beavie was down on the ground. Everyone was very excited to see Beavie and Elly carried him on her back, back home to his parents. From that day forward, Beavie NEVER climbed a tree again.
