COMPREHENSION: THE TWINS

‘A long time ago, in the land of “igogo “girl twins used to be thrown to the hyenas. With the believe that they will bring bad luck to the community. ‘One day a woman had twins a boy and a girl, and they were both very beautiful.

But she didn’t want to throw away the baby girl, she picked up her baby girl and carried her until she came to a dried-up well. ‘’People say that good spirits live in dried-up wells.” She said to herself, “so I’ll leave my little girl here.” She put her baby into the well and returned home to take care of the boy.

Luckily the good spirits found the baby. They took care of here and thought her how to weave. When she was old enough, they told her how her mother had put her inside the well. The girl was sad. She wanted to find people like herself, so one day she walked away from the well and went into the forest.

She walked a long way then she climbed a tree a started to sing, ‘A prince who was hunting in the forest heard the girl singing. He looked up and saw how beautiful she was, but she didn’t see him. He turned and ran home as fast as he could to ask his father if he could bring her to the palace.

‘Just as he left. The girl’s twin brother, who was fetching firewood in the forest, came near the tree and heard her song. She was singing about her mother and her twin brother. The boy knew the story of his twin sister, he knew that he had found his twin. He did not speak her but he ran home happily to tell his mother.

The prince and his servant came back to the tree. The prince was glad to see that the girl was still there. He spoked to her and asked her to come down. He asked her to come and meet his father. ‘’you have heard my song,” she said. “I am an outcast. Your father will not want me to stay under his roof.”

‘The prince told her not to worry. He took her home and asked her to marry him. She willingly agreed and he ordered his servants to prepare the wedding. ‘When the twin brother and his mother arrived at the tree, they were sad because the girl was not there.

They walked through the forest until they came near to the palace. When there heard the music for the wedding, they went near. The boy recognized his twin sister. He and his mother went to the king and spoke to him. “We are her mother and her brother,” they said. When the king heard the story,

He stood up and spoke to everyone. “Girl twins shall never be thrown to the hyenas,” he said. The girl married the prince that day and she became the princess. Her mother and brother came to live at the palace. They lived happily ever after.
